View Full Version : Group buy: RVC low for Passat, Tiguan, Octavia?

Hi All,
I am considering having a crack at installing an OEM-style RVC low kit.
Chinese camera kit (http://www.aliexpress.com/item/VW-Passat-Tiguan-Touran-Golf-plus-rear-view-camera-kit-for-RNS510-RCD510-RNS315/545568664.html)
Firstly, I have no confirmation that this will actually work, or for what models, so only for tinkerers. In theory this should work with RNS510, RCD310 and RCD510. It appears to be the same as this kit:
Carsystems Product (http://www.carsystems.pl/vw-rear-low-camera-kit-retrofit-5n0827566j-sharan-7n0-golf-variant-passat-variant,id353.html)
This is the camera style that replaces the boot release handle.
Basically if I can find two other brave souls willing to cut their fingers open and swear a lot running the cable under their trim and carpet, we can get the kits for ~$105US plus shipping.
Anyone interested?

I'm interested - not in the cut fingers bit though.
Looks like it replaces the boot handle (not licencse plate light) which is same as OEM.
Will it work with RCD310? I didn't think these units have 1) an input for RVC 2) capability to display images. Just taken an RCD310 out of my Tiguan and definitely didn't have an RVC input.
If anyone with an RCD510 is considering this upgrade they should check if they have the 26 pin RVC connector on the back of the RCD510. Only higher end Bosch units have this connector. Lower function RCD510's won't have an RVC input - check it out first before you get disappointed. You may have to pull your head unit out to inspect - good practise anyway.
Can't say if all RNS units have the input but I suspect they all may (anyone???).
Last thing is I don't think it comes with "lines" - camera picture only. Would have to check if the Polish unit has the lines on the display or not but either way will save running over the kids bikes.

Any unit which has the 26-pin multimedia connector would be compatible.
Sorry yes its the handle replacement version (original post corrected). Confused myself with too much researching...in the Octavia at least it may require the enlargement of the boot release handle hole in the boot metal from what I've read.

It will come with some fixed lines like what is shown in the Tiguan VCDS tweaks post in the Tiguan forum. I think what Mr Xu is trying to say is that it is not the high line model with the moving track lines that are generated from the 6C park assist module.
My RVC came from an eBay seller based in Taiwan and I suspect it came from the same factory/source as the wires are the same color as those shown on the Chinese seller's web page.
The RVC will fit in any Bosch RCD 510 unit made in 2010 and later. It will also fit in the "plus" version of the RCD 510 unit made by Delphi which sells for around the same price as the Bosch unit. However this unit does not have RDS but has an input for a USB cable which is iPod compatible and saves you installing an MDI module.
I recently bought two 9w2 BT units from an eBay seller in Sydney and these are identical to what Mr Xu is also selling as well.

In past 2 weeks, I've installed 3 reversing cameras, one into our Tiguan and 2 into Golf6. The installation is not hard, if you are able to follow the instructions and have some basic tools. I've also bought the advanced rvc for my daughter's Tig that is still on my desk. The advanced rvc install is not so DIY friendly, since there are big connectors on both ends of the wiring harnes and some complete trim removal is needed to put the wiring in the place. There are 4 wires 20cm from the 26pin connector that need to be connected somewhere behind the unit, +12V, 0Vneg, CAN H and CAN L, I'm still going through the wiring diagrams, so I connect them where they should be connected, since I hate when the things aren't done properly. :P
I took some pictures of the Tiguan install, where I've run the wiring through, and will take more pictures when I install the advanced rvc.
Just something to remember before you decide to buy advanced rvc, the rvc has to be calibrated using equipment, which you may not have.

I had to connect the same 4 wires you have described above for the two BT units I installed last week. You may want to get the extractor tool set Tigger 73 tracked down on the net to extract the 4 existing wires out of the quad block it is a serious PITA to get them out in order to join them up
The calibration procedure is documented in Win Elsa and from the document I saw the module has default settings for Tiguan Touran etc. You just need to access it via VCDS
I will send you the "installation instructions" I got sent

I am interested also but does anybody have any information about enlarging the boot lid opening for the Octavia VRS ?? I cant seem to see a thread with pictures describing how to do this anywhere?

Only info I've found is from briskoda forums. We are pretty much just going out on our own and trying this.
As the financial commitment is relatively small (time committment larger) this initially is for those willing to have a crack and maybe not get a favourable result (although I am fairly confident this will work fine).
If you prefer you can wait and see how the first attempts pan out and we can report back...

I've already coded up my RCD510 for RVC. I get a blue screen when I select reverse - just waiting to fit the camera...
I think there's at least 3 interested so let's hit the button and get an order happening.
Actually if there is one other from Adelaide (myself, Transporter , ???) we can get an order shipped direct to Adelaide rather than going through Kamold in Sydney. Will save time and shipping costs.
That is as long as there are at least 2 others to make a second order for you Kamold...

1 do you need the programming module or disk to setup the 510 and or calibrate it to the camera?
2 What actual car has the number plate / trunk handle positioned camera? passat cc is only the badge version right?
3 A little more info from anyone who's done this or perhaps some links to pics to see how much needs to be pulled apart?
4 does it interfere at all with the park assist 1/2 functions?
thx

You can get the radar screen to overlay the left side of the rvc by programming rvc into the ops section of iirc the body electronics. Most guides for fitting rvc only mention programming the nav/radio, and don't mention this extra bit to set if you have ops.

OK. So I'm 3/4 way through installing the RVC. All cables are in. All I need to do is connect up power and reverse switch.... but need to know which wire is which.
Educated guess is
red/black: +12V
blue/black: reverse light
green/brown: 0V
If anyone has installed one of the AliExpress units and got it going please let me know....
Otherwise I'll let you guys know when I get it working.

Just looking at the camera connector and there are red, yellow and brown wires so go by that. The yellow is the reverse light and red is the power on the camera connector.

OK so the RVC from our Chinese friends is in and working. I've got it hooked up to a near new RCD510 head unit and picture quality is reasonable.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/10/8129728655_8cd03ccd7f_z-1.jpg
Thanks for confirmation Transporter you were right - the red/black is 12V, brown/green was 0V and blue/black is connected into the reverse light to switch the unit on/off.
I connected the brown/green to the top of the hatch/boot, the red/black to the centre pin of the power socket in the boot (left side) and ran the blue/black to the right side to pick up the reversing light (as there were no reverse light wires accessible on the left). Things were made simpler for me as my reversing sensors were already connected in here and I just picked off the same wire as the reverse sensors were connected to.
Anyway so the units seem to work OK and for $120 (and a few hours pulling trims and running wires) it's a worthwhile investment.

...and I must say the picture looks good. It has more fish eye effect than the OEM camera but the colours look good and the resolution is not worst than the OEM rvc, it may even be slightly better. I will be fitting in in the RS Octavia next weekend.

Will have to post a photo next week as I won't have a chance to do it until then. It's hardly noticeable all you see is a little camera peeking out under the boot. The boot release handle is not so wide as a bit is now taken up with the camera.
It's the same as the OEM look so if you can find a picture in a brochure this is how it will turn out.

I'm almost 100% that the RCD310 doesn't support RVC.
You'll need a head unit that has:
1) a 26 pin connector on the back for RVC input
2) ability for the display to support pictures/images
Almost certain that the RCD310 misses out on both counts as I used to have RCD310 in my Tiguan and it definitely didn't have a 26 pin input for RVC and don't think the display was up to images as it was just a basic monochrome unit.
There is an RNS310 unit (smaller 5" Sat Nav unit), but I don't think these units were ever available in Australia.

I bought the unit for my Skoda in the group buy.
Does anybody know of an installer (as you need to cut out the larger boot opening) for a Skoda Octavia wagon who has done the install previously? I'm Sydney based. Happy to pay a reasonable fee as I reckon its a job too big for my DIY skills
Also has anybody managed to code it to work with OPS on screen?

There was no cutting of the boot required. The old boot handle and new handle fit in exactly the same location - except the new one has a small part of the rubber section on the right end taken up with the camera.
I actually find it useful for locating the boot handle. Instead of groping around hunting for the handle if you take a look for the camera and then put your hand directly left you get the boot handle first time every time.
Added bonus and not a feature that you'd see the advertising material. :)

The RVC is not suitable for 2010 vRS sedan, the handle is smaller, so the camera is too big to be fitted.

Sorry to bump an old thread but has anyone with an Octavia installed one of these yet?
I bought one from AliExpress and have run most of the cabling and confirmed the camera works but I haven't stumped up the courage to cut the boot lid to fit the camera yet.
Also I'm not too sure how I will secure the camera since the bolt spacing on the camera doesn't match the factory backing plate.
The other option I'm considering is forget the Tiguan RGB factory style camera and try one of the composite cameras off AliExpress which is a direct fit for the Octavia boot release handle and run a composite to rgb converter.

Funny you should bring this up.
I was about to finally do mine as well.
The other issue I found was that the camera module is too deep for the recessed cutout in the boot. Will require filling with epoxy.
So I am unsure if I want to do that now.
I reckon that CCD and RGB converter is the way to go.

I ended up ordering the AliExpress units and installed them over the weekend and have it up and running.

I picked this one because it's available in a PAL version (using the logic that higher resolution and better colour reproduction is better than the slightly higher frame rate of NTSC, not that it probably makes much difference on a little LCD).
This is the converter box I got after confirming with the seller that it works with PAL cameras.

Here are some notes from the installation (I didn't take any pictures, sorry!).
The part of the camera/handle unit that goes inside the car is taller than the factory handle. I had to make a spacer for inside the car so that I could use the bracket from the stock handle to secure it properly. I just used a bit of masonite I had in the shed, only needs to be about 5mm thick.
The camera section on the handle pokes down a fair way. I have slimline number plates without a surround and the camera just touches the numberplate. Keep that in mind if you have a numberplate surround or a larger numberplate.
Lots of the metal clips that hold the plastic boot liner onto the boot lid didn't want to come out when I pulled the liner off. I bought trim clip pliers from ebay and they were perfect for getting them out. Trim Clip Plier | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/291042186533?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649)
To get the boot liner back on (I have a liftback so may be different for the wagon) I found it easiest to clip the liner on at the bottom first, then line it up to clip in at the glass then the middle follows from that.
You can't power the camera directly from the reverse light otherwise you'll get an unstable picture when the engine is started (I'd already read about this on briskoda so knew it was a possibility). I bought an automotive relay and used the reverse light power as the switch signal and ran a new wire straight from the fuse box to power the camera (which was actually for the accessories socket I wired in the boot at the same time since the liftback doesn't come with one).
The converter box is just sitting loose behind the climate controls beneath the head unit, I have it wired direct from the fuse box from a spare socket that gets switched with ignition. At the moment I'm using piggy back fuse sockets I got from Autobarn but I have to rethink this as I can't put the fuse box cover back on at the moment.
Currently the picture from the camera tears at the very top of the frame and you can see some interference/shadowing scrolling down the picture. I'm not sure if this is the camera (I tested first it by plugging it into the tv and I didn't notice it then), the converter box, or if the wiring is picking up the interference. It might be worth buying a much better quality shielded signal cable to run from the camera to the front of the car.
Those are the main things to watch for. If I think of anything else I'll post it.
kamold
15-01-2014, 02:29 PM
I did mine last weekend as well :)
Same issues encountered as you with the spacer required.
The interference is due to the power feed. Its very noisy. I used a filter from Jaycar, tidied it right up.

Needs a bigger hole (don't want to cut this until I get the other issues sorted)

Hi,
yesterday i installed a reverse camera in my 2012MY superb. I wired everything as it should be but i face some problems that i cannot solve.
The screen of my Amundsen+ (RnS315) stays black when i put the car in reverse, it only says "Look? Safe to move". And there is the options button but i cannot click it. It seems to be "frozen". The amundsen knows i am clicking on it because it gives the usual 'beep' but nothing happens then.
The camera is an boot handle camera with RCA plug. I use an interface as converter for the rca to the amundsen pin plugs. I already tested everything with a multimeter and everything should be fine.
I already found some topics on the web with people who have exactly the same issues but nobody seemed to be able to help.
Maybe here? I used exactly the same interface and camera as you did.

Did you remove the lens cap? ;)
Otherwise I would be looking at making sure that you have power to the camera when you're in reverse. Take the power from a constant 12V source (e.g. 12 v power outlet in the boot) rather than the reverse lights/circuit.
Good luck!

If you get an image occasionally then more than likely it's not a software/coding issue. Id be looking at dodgy connections or faulty RVC.
Whenever you're putting something like this in I'd recommend connecting the unit up directly to the head unit and check that everything is functioning before going through all the pain of running wires/installation into the vehicle.

Carsystems Product (http://www.carsystems.pl/vw-rear-low-camera-kit-retrofit-5n0827566j-sharan-7n0-golf-variant-passat-variant,id353.html)
This is the camera style that replaces the boot release handle.
Basically if I can find two other brave souls willing to cut their fingers open and swear a lot running the cable under their trim and carpet, we can get the kits for ~$105US plus shipping.
Anyone interested?
Hi All,
I have one of the 'Chinese' versions of the camera. Was going to fit it in a pre-FL Octavia hatch, but as said in this thread, it won't fit without body work - not game to do that. From what I have read it should be a direct fit in a Tig.
As it has been sitting in the garage for a while now its time to move it on...
If anyone is interested, looking at offers around $100 plus postage.
Cheers
Tom
