since my mk2 is finished i needed something to get me back into the garage.i have wanted amk1 2 dr for ages so i thought due to my other daily driver being involved in a meeting with a 4 wheel drive.so here goes i thought i would document this one a little
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2005/05/IMG_1592-1.jpg
and back already got out the welder and filled the badge holes soon to be gone the button just waiting on a solenoid
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2005/05/IMG_1591-1.jpg
next to go the aierial hole and the left hand side mirror, who needs it
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2005/05/IMG_1596-1.jpg
put my gti seats from my mk2 in cut down the rear post to sit lower about 2 inchs
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y221/dubstarmk2/IMG_1595.jpg
and this is the new profile of the rear wheels with the new spacers in an extra 20mm

got hold of new some low springs yesterday(not low enough) for a steal so i cut 3 coils out of the rear and one out of the front as i couldnt stand that stilts look and damm does it make a difference through the corners ,it actually goes when you point it, took a few inchs out of the height at least it is good to be back on the ground.bought that weber off the golf loon and got to striping it down today and polishing and porting the manifold, will get some pics up soon. anyway here is the new stance got way lower to go but for a start. ohh yer the mk2 is being shot for vwma in the next couple of weeks

Thought the Mk4 rims were 5 stud? Could be wrong... maybe it was a differnent offset or PCD....but I saw some on ebay a while ago and had them checked out before I bought. They wouldn't fit.

theres trechory afoot! - clearly, you can see that the photo of the "shiny rims and shiny paint" the car is already on its guts alot more than the later images of the white one with a higher sit car.
if your just niggling until you get a crazy backdrop style photo before you show us your final photo.. well... i wont do much.. but yeh.. STOP TEASING!!! :P

Hey Rednut, DubstarMk2 has two golfs the show stealing Mk2 in the background and his White Mk1. The Mk2 is on display in another thread, I forget which one. I`ve seen the silver one a few times and its a beast.

Your project is looking great and you are certainly getting stuck into it.I wonder about the fumes from the engine when you turn on your heater , getting rid of the rain "tray" looks ok on show cars but I personally wouldn't do it ,once its cut off you can't turn back.
I still respect your project all the same.Where did you get the grey striped seats as they look like GTi ones.

a trunk release kit, the type with a wire i had to cut a section out of the rear of the lid as there is no access to mount the solenoid.i ran the wire up to join with the demister cable and through to the front of the car and the switch well thats a secret for now.i had to extend the cam on the lock mechanism 15 odd mm to able the solenoid more leverage, works a treat.will be full delocked soon.my mk2 is fully delocked no troubles there, you can pop the bonnet from outside the car anyway ehh

you can actually reach the bonnet release from out side.put central locking on yesterday and hooked up the boot release to the second channel, nice feels like the 20th century again. also cut a great big section out of the firewall as there was a rust hole hiding behind the sound deadening will plate it up today, that sound deadening **** is bad. got a set of wheels ohh keep them under wraps so nice and the pile of goodies is growing will get some pics up soon. the chrome count is growing i am adicted love the shine

hey man u get those wheels of ebay ? i just got a set of 13x7s with a offset of -6  so they look like they will require spacers and will hang out the guards alot on the front only hang out about 8mm on the back. what offset are they there off a gemini yeah ?
also did u get those bumper end caps from eurocullen or did u just chrome dip stock ones ?
cheers brenton

alex g
31-07-2005, 08:41 AM
i made the end caps myself out of ally and just polished them those wheels have an offset of 6 i had to grind the front calipers for clearance though, spacers????? they are only gonna push the wheel further out increasing that already large et, although yes you may be using them to clear the calipers, they are gemini fitment. what wheels did you get???

01-08-2005, 01:56 AM
i got some compomotive 13x7's are yours a +6 or a -6 offset ? how much did u have to grind the caliper down i was goin to do that to ?
but i really want u to say -6mm like mine so i no that someone else has done it
cheers brenton

alex g
01-08-2005, 08:44 AM
mine are positive 6 yours being negative 6 means they will be sticking out a further 12mm than mine, i took a decent amount off the caliper as the inner face was pretty flat all is well still. the offset shouldnt make to much difference to the mounting face thoughany way went in for tyres the other day so will be rolling in the next few weeks as soon as the coilovers arrive.
and thanks to the the honesty of some different strokes for different folks, and thank god for it

yeah, also not a huge fan of the chromes, like tassiegti said, to each his own, its great, makes for some individuality in projects. personally theres a couple of wheels id have my eye on, i will be starting with either: mk3 wheels or mk1 gti wheels (tanks tassiegti :P) they will go one my current project. also id go a set of hotwires, and clean em up a bit, throw some low pro's on em. theres a set of 'speedy wheels' hyper fangs, ive seen them on some golfsm they look cool. but definately the number one choice for me is: either Ronal Turbo's OR BBS RS. Well thats my opinion

Obviously your car is for show !
It wouldn't get registered anywhere in Oz with wheel offset like that. and how dangerous when it hits a bump or goes around a corner and the tyre fouls on the guard, suspension does move up and down.
You shouldn't promote illegal cars on this forum as there are lots of young guys who would be wrongly influenced by it.
VW's old or new are a classy car and your style degrades them in my opinion.
Real cars are not oversized "Hotwheels"that you may have had when you were a boy. They are a compromise. They need to pass strict design regs.
Please don't call it the Aussie look either. :) :) :) :) :)

geez dude. pull your head in! i happen to know Golfwise, and hes a great guy, wisest guy around, knows a hell of a lot!! and he may have his opinions, and he may even appear to be oppinionated, but thats because he knows what hes talking about!!! hes been doing this since before you were in nappies!! hes a great guy, i owe him a lot, hes helped me heaps, and his cars arent "grandpa mobiles" ive seen the cars he has built, look at both TassieGTi's cars, both at least partially built by golfwise, and wolfsburg's car was also originally built by golfwise.

in my opinion you are am absolute dikhead and should keep your mouth shut, i dont go round twisting kids arms telling them to follow me and anyway i am a kid and this car is fun, not some stuk up pompus grandad mobile ,it about fun and style two things that you know nothing about
, and next time keep you crap to yourself and dont foul up our nice little forum

Now that’s an intelligent response dubsmark2! Nothing said by golfwise was intended to be a personal attack and to be honest your reply is very average! I am not even going to stoop to your level to address anything personal that you mentioned!

This is a forum designed for people to feel free to express their personal opinions about topics posted. You seem very keen to show the World your project, but obviously struggle to accept negative criticism. As I have said before, we all have different tastes, which makes for some very unique projects. You said yourself that you are glad people don’t like what you are doing so that way you will not be copied!

I find that these forums can be funny things! People posting pictures of their projects and changes for some kind of ego boost? Maybe I am guilty of doing the same for putting my car on the forum. It’s a sign of character and refreshing that golfwise has the balls to express his opinions on your project. But knowing him, he would say to same to you in person if he saw your car! If you did the same, he would laugh at you and walk away! If you are not willing to accept all opinions on your car then don’t go plugging it on the forum!

Like I have said before, your style is not to my liking, but that is my opinion and I should be entitled to express it!

Accept all opinions, even if negative. If you can’t simply ignore negative comments and get your ego boost from all the positives, having faith in your personal style and taste, then don’t go posting on the forum!

Golfwise has an amazing wealth of knowledge and experience that I am sure would put you to shame! Like many others on the forum who you don’t read from recently, I doubt he will bother in the future!

As expressed by foolio……pull your head in!

Well what would you do if someone called your old man a ****head and a stuck up pompus grandad who knows nothing about fun and style???? I reckon you got off lightly!! Lucky I'm not into being abusive, but no prizes for guessing what we now think of you!

21-08-2005, 09:21 PM
dubstar, you seem like a cool guy, but just pull your head in leave it there. TassieGTi is right, if you put up a picture of your car, you need to be prepared for some people to think that its ****house, and for some people to love it. I have a LOT of respect for what both Golfwise and TassieGTi, so i will stick up for the both of them till the cows come home!

Right you lot, chill pills allround. Golfwise you are wise and mostly correct. However, at least Al is a precision engineer and so has done his research with regards to coilovers and planned, well engineered wheels. At least he is not advocating cut springs and wheel spacers. I have seen his Mk2 and this Mk1 and it will be a useable showcar by the end.

Personally I like the 90s euro look with plastic bumpers and 5 spoke mags, but some of the best and most agile golfs I have owned have had 13" wheels, they handle great and accelerate quickly. I can however appreciate the oldskool glory of projects like the dubstars, as they look retro, as Mk1s obviously are, but look more slick and polished too.

After all if owning a golf meant owning a stock 1976 LS there would not be many left. Sinse the beginning the stock golf has been modified and tuned. Thats not gonna change. Just appreciate the blood sweat and tears as well as the carefull planning and engineering that goes into a project. Even if the result is not the way you would have done it, thats ok. We drive golfs to be different, not the same.

Let there be no division and dissent here. This forum is a great place to be, lets keep it that way.

Now shake hands, or It`ll be handbags at dawn. 8)

Well none did actually!! I've only heard of one in the country (a lefthand drive Golf L) - the rest are later model LS's with leftover German rear panels :)

Coming along great, Al - are you going to be able to get that cage out to paint the interior, though :o I'm curious about why you're even installing hydraulic lines etc when it'll all have to come out again?

Love your pedal box especially :D

alex g
05-01-2008, 07:05 PM
i am building up everything as i dont want to stuff around when it comes back from paint, the cage is and will be fully removed and only the front welded in section will stay(obviously). there is a lot of work running cutting and prepping lines and i want to have everything ready for the full rebuild, i basically want to put it back together when it comes back from paint

yer the box it sweet worth all those pounds

05-01-2008, 07:22 PM
She's looking good Alex.

Finish line is still a fair bit away by the look's of it , but it is closer!!!;)

What did you end up doing with the original pedal's off the pedal box?

alex g
05-01-2008, 08:06 PM
yer still a ways to go
i had to chop them as i used the upper section to attach the alloy pedals to, but i think i have a spare set if you are looking for some

this is how they come from the factory officer i promise

they are 280mm the biggest that would fit under 15's but not without a struggle

they mount up with mmp adapters
