Audi newbie

Hi everyone! I am about to buy an 1992 Audi 80 2.3L and it will be my first car of this calibre. You don't want to know what I owned last!!! HA!
Anyway, the owner doesn't know when the timing belt was last done or if it has had any major work done on it because he says he didn't get any books when he bought it. I'm going to have it checked by a specialist before I buy it but I was hoping I could get some input from some enthusiasts.
The kms are low at 138,000 which is good but I am worried that I'll buy it and have to do some serious work to it soon after.
Any advice would be appreciated!

I'd do the belt regardless of it's history just for peace of mind.

Especially if it the 20valve motor. Don't want it snapping and taking out loads of valves, although I have some if that happens.

otherwise the engine is just a big Golf one.

The rest of the car should be pretty bulletproof.

We had ****ty weather in the UK and the only rusty Audi's of that era were ones with badly repaired accident damage. They last pretty much indefinitely in my experience.

Things like exhausts rot away on any car that does short journeys. A new back box wouldn't break the bank if the rest of the car is good enough. Not unheard of for an exhaust to last more than 10 years on a well used VW/Audi.

Just check it over closely and ask questions on anything that catches your eye. If you live out of town the fuel consumption would be better I think, that's my only concern with running a car like that. I like my 4 cyls for that reason.

Special tool to loosen off the crankshaft pulley mate very very tight!! Also recommend you do the water pump while you are there mate. Sounds like 10 valve motor but same deal lots of valves to bend. Things to look out for are wishbone bushes mate, they wear and cause excessive movement at your suspension causing knocking and rapid tyre wear have them checked. Strong motors though, keep its oil good and itll last a lifetime. feel free to ask any questions mate , very conversant with them
