So I ordered my car back in March and last month it moved from Dealer Spec to Order status

And now the dealer tells me 'Unfortunately no information on the Vin Number and build week provided as at this stage. However the production week shown below is week 27.'

What's the diff between build week and production week?

The screenshot she sent me shows :

Planned production week 27.2012

Production ID Week 27 Day 1 Number 5176 Year 2012

Entry Dealer System 15/03/12 Entry FAVAS System 11/05/012

Can I gleam any further info from this?

Thanks
A

So from that information I would have thought that the car is scheduled to be built on Monday July 2nd. I guess whether that turns out to be the case might be another thing.

In my case I couldn't get a confirmation from the sales guy but I could get the NADCON info from the stock controller.

Looks like your car will be here in September.

Also take a look on sciroccocentral (http://http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=2&sid=6b70fdc861f21577cc7e8d4fb474388e) RW who is one of the mods is brilliant at posting the shipping info. That link will take you to build date and shipping date threads on that site.

Production week is only a 'desired' production week.

Doesn't mean it will actually be produced that week. Zee Germans are usually pretty punctual but Roccs are built in Portugal.

So I now have a VIN number :) So guess we're getting close!

Does that mean build has commenced?

Is there anything else I can find out with the VIN?

Presumably it has been built a couple of days ago. RW1 should be able to tell you.

Have you tried searching using the VIN on the shippers website as per the tracking link above?

Yeah I tried but no track - guess it hasn't made the ship yet :(

I don't know how often they are shipped to germany i guess when there is a full load comprising of roc, eos and sharan. Don't even know how RocS are made each year. VW celebrated building no 100,000 back in august 2010 ( 2 and a half years after launch) but obviosly haven't got to 200,000 yet.

At least it is real now......

Built on Tuesday 3rd. On the quayside at Setúbal in Portugal awaiting the EMDEN, due to sail on 11.07.12 @ 01:00 to Port of Emden, arrival 14.07.12 @ 09:00.

But be warned! The EMDEN is a tub that never, never sticks to schedule  The ship might make port at Setúbal by 09.07.12 @ 17:00 if she has a following wind. She's got a 25 knot head wind at the moment north of Brest in France doing 12 knots instead of the usual 15 knots sailing speed.

Transfer to Bremerhaven, so should go on Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines ship around 24.07.12 - 30.07.12, arrival Australian ports from 01.09.12 - 10.09.12, (Port Kembla 5th & 10th September).

Variable build due to demand, 30,000 units was the target per annum back in 2007 for 5.5 years, to fill the gap in the factory because Ford pulled out of the common factory build arrangement (VW Sharan, SEAT Alhambra & Ford Galaxy MPV's) with the Ford Galaxy updated model, leaving VAG with a production capacity window in the Autoeuropa factory at Palmela, Portugal. This is it before the Scirocco started but its the same methods for the Scirocco - Volkswagen Eos Factory Tour - Palmela, Portugal (http://www.vwvortex.com/artman/publish/vortex_news/printer_1814.shtml)
Video: Volkswagen Autoeuropa | VW-Werk in Portugal - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eecbwkQHEW8)

Depending on year its been 37,000 - 50,000 with MY2010 (May2009 - April2010) being the most. Total is passing around 165,000-ish at the moment. Launch date in dealerships (UK) was August 2008, nearly 4 years ago, production started 6 months earlier. How time flies.........

Hi RW1,

Thanks for the numbers. I can say that i have seen a few here in Greece this past week. At a conference in Thessaloniki. No r models spied yet. There is quite a flat, mid red that seems popular. Not as bright as tornado red.

Assuming the model change does take place as rumoured in 2014 then VW should produce a bit over 200,000 of the mk iii.

Your note about the factory arrangements made me wonder if the Roc was designed just to fit a production capability or as a key product that just happens to be built in a factory that had spare capacity. At 30,000 units per annum it has to be amongst the lower end of the Vw Audi etc volume runs.

That will be Salsa Red. Look at the VW UK brochure http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/#/new/car-range/ (Can't link it anyfurther cos of sub windows. There is a Price list, Brochure and R brochure on one of the sub windows that can be downloaded) I wanted Firespark Red or Flash Red by special order but VW canned special order paint (all VW's - June 2009) the month before I went to buy due to high order levels. The Salsa Red looks too dirty, too quickly, when I see them in the UK. So I settled for white, second choice being Opal Silver (light gold metalic shade, now deleted and replaced by Silver Leaf a deeper shade.)

They do have R's but the main staple in Euro outside the UK is the 160PS Twin Charge or the 140PS CR diesel.

Production rate is similar to the Mk2 Scirocco at Karmann, but no where near the heady heights of the Mk1 rate Karmann built.

When VW dipped their toe in the water about entering the Sport Coupe market again, they had gone through the Corrado failing to sell with high production costs, public revulsion of fast sports cars at about the same time. When others had recovered ahead of them, they needed to gain ground. I don't think VW top brass were convinced. So it was plonked in Portugal as they had fallen out with Karmann. I think if the gap hadn't appeared, they would have had difficulty in putting production somewhere. Now they can as of last year with the old Karmann factory at Osnabrück only running at half capacity as a re-furbished VW plant.

And don't forget..... they will never let the Scirocco influence Golf sales in any country's market sales, so it will always stay a cinderella.

The Portuguses factory had the EOS chassis to use with a few tweaks. But is not geared up for 4WD, so that remains Golf territory.

What they didn't bargain for was the younger element of driver's having access to cheap finance and a car they liked or the UK reducing VAT to 15% in 2009. All a big post launch boost to marketing the car.
