team_v
20-06-2012, 10:52 AM
The next level up from happy laps is the street sprint series.
The cost is $145 each or if we have a group of 10-15 people it is $1450 and we get our own category.
An AASA licence is required for the event ($20 for the day licence, $55 for the year)
Safety requirements are a current standard compliant helmet (They have a few for rent for $5), long sleaves/pants and enclosed shoes.
The Series is open to all vehicles, they must be fitted with street legal tyres and exhaust. Eligible cars will be divided into four categories. 4 Cylinder , 6 Cylinder , 8 Cylinder , All Wheel Drive.Turbo charged and /or supercharged air induction vehicles will move up by one category. (Except AWD)
Race and Unregistered cars may enter the Street Sprints, but they will NOT be awarded points for the series
The Street Sprints will be held at Queensland Raceway (Sprint Circuit) and Lakeside Park.
Sprint Format. 3 x 4 Lap sessions + Passenger Laps if time available.
Sessions will be timed.
Drivers Briefing at 12 noon, First group to be on track at 12.30pm.
Can i get people to let me know if they would be interested in this sort of thing as the next step up from Happy Laps?
I will have a list here so that if it gets organised i can contact people for the respective circuit.

Advanced Driving Courses - from $99pp (own vehicle)
Intensity Level: 4

Completing Queensland Raceways Advanced Driving Course and spending one-on-one time with Queensland Raceways resident professional race driving instructor Doug Chapple will really help you hone your driving technique.
Who is Doug Chapple?
Doug has over 40 years experience in motor sport with more recent years having been spent in Sports Cars withmany Championship wins and places, plus twice winner of MG Car Club of Queensland, Race Driver of the Year.
Dougs' vast experience has been put to good use over recent years instructing others one on one in a variety of on track products including V8 Experience, Time Attack Track Days and Stokell Motorsport Track Days.

Clay what is the deal with 2 people in the one car? I am not talking the same time just splitting the time driving as both myself and my old man might be interested in this in my car.
You'd need to be seperate groups. They used to run about 6 groups on the day (that may have changed) which made it possible to share the drive. You'd need one in group 1 and say group 3 or 4 for example to allow sufficient time between runs to swap drivers. As group 1 circulates, group 2 is lined up, group 1 comes off, group 2 goes on, and group 3 lines up. When there's no issues (e.g. cars leaking oil or needing recovery), they circulate pretty quickly.
Surprised to see they've changed it to 4 lap sessions, used to 5 laps per session, and 3 timed sessions with a 4th untimed.
I'd probably be up for QR depending on when. My weekends are quickly booking up.

As it stands this is just an EOI so that if we do end up organising something i can just go to the list and shoot a pm to anyone who is listed for the specific venue.
The street series on weekends runs less laps but also costs less.
I will find out what the costs are for a second driver nad what the protocols would be (as sean said, might have to be in a different category.)

Okay, i have updated the details so far.
In the event that we get enough people interested and i decide to go ahead with organising one of these for the group, i will be contacting the people on the list for the venue that has been selected and asking for availability.
These are the dates and locations for the rest of this year just so you are all aware:
8 July - QR
22 July - LP
30 Sep - QR
14 Oct - LP
18 Nov - QR
2 Dec - LP
Note: These are all held on a sunday, if you are interested in a Saturday event it has to be the Top Gear Series (Which costs a lot more and is an actual race, not a timed sprint)
At this stage I would be looking at 30 September for QR as most people seem keener to start there.
This all relies on enough people showing a genuine interest and availability.

Clay, I would much prefer this over sprints to start with that way I can get the most out of sprints.
That is what i was thinking, had a chat with a few of the happy lappers who have requested a driver training style event so that everyone can learn theproper lines to get the most out of hapy laps and street sprints if we step it up a notch.
Updated the first post with details on the advanced driver training.

i like this better, should be more relaxed than sprint sessions, yet u can actually push it as hard as sprint / timeattack sessions.
but is just $99 with min 5 participants or there are additional costs? $99 is just too good to be true.
cheapest full day driver training is usually $170-$299

$99 with a minimum or 5 participants at this stage, i will give them a call and confirm in a week or so when i vcall to organise August Happy Laps.
I assume it might be extra if you want catering.
Might also only be a half day type thing where you only get 10-15 minutes on the track each.

Alright, 7 people so far.
Some more details for you:
It is held on the same day as a sprint session.
We would rock up an hour before the sprint session in order to do a theory lesson on how to set up the car, work out where the apex's are, cornering speeds and lines etc.
Then as part of the sprint session we would go out and do our 4 x runs of 5 laps with the instructor going along with us for one of the sessions and giving hints on how to improve.

That doesn't seem to add up. 4 sessions means he can only get in 4 cars as we'd all likely be in the same session. Looking from the outside would suggest very little about what's going on in the car. Could be great it you're really unsure about lines, he could tell that from a distance, but not so much the intricacies of car control, braking style and gear without being in the car.
I would pass on this if that's the case. Though others may get more out of it.
But hey, for the price it's hard to argue with the approach.

15 is OK so long as everyone understands that they will be spread over 3 groups.
We will need to have you all there at 10.00am for the class room session, approx 45 mins.11.00 will be registration at the circuit office, unpack car in car port allocated and get set, 12.00 Drivers Briefing and on track at 12.30.

Sean.
The driver training days are held on the same days as the sprint sessions.
I believe what they do is let you out on the track as your own group during the sprint sessions to put your training into practice and get some real experience.
If you want you can come out and do the sprints on the same day but this one is scheduled when they are holding the open sprints at Lakeside, not the street sprint series so it may cost more to do the sprint sessions.

hi Clay,
I am actually booked for the LS practice session and open sprints on the 18th so someone can take my spot in the vw group if needed.
looks like we have sorted the bugs out of the bug and have fixed the 4500rpm limiter issues so looking forward to a strong run on the 18th.

Me too! 8hrs at Lakeside in a car going fast what gets better than that? Maybe 8hr on the Nurburgring?

Just so everyone is aware, the 6.5 hours that they have set aside is also for another group doing the driver training as well as the open sprints to be run so we won't be on the track the whole time.
The driver training starts at 10:00am and goes until 4:30pm but the first hour is theory and the second hour is getting all signed up and car emptied.
Here is what i know so far:
Advanced Driving Courses - from $99pp (own vehicle)
Intensity Level: 4
Any experienced sprints driver or racer will tell you that the best way to improve your cars performance is to improve the driving performance of person sitting behind the steering wheel.
We all think we're great drivers on the road, and it is true to say that some of those skills are transferable to the track.
Completing Queensland Raceways Advanced Driving Course and spending one-on-one time with Queensland Raceways resident professional race driving instructor Doug Chapple will really help you hone your driving technique.
Who is Doug Chapple?
Doug has over 40 years experience in motor sport with more recent years having been spent in Sports Cars with many Championship wins and places, plus twice winner of MG Car Club of Queensland, Race Driver of the Year.
Dougs' vast experience has been put to good use over recent years instructing others one on one in a variety of on track products including V8 Experience, Time Attack Track Days and Stokell Motorsport Track Days.
Whats Included
1.Expert one-on-one tuition with Motor Sport Champion Doug Chapple
2.A choice of two award winning race tracks
3.Race suits and helmets will be provided
4.Theory session up to elite standard (including corner planning, car preparation, tyre selection)
5.Certificates from completion of the course
It is held on the same day as a sprint session.
We would rock up an hour before the sprint session in order to do a theory lesson on how to set up the car, work out where the apex's are, cornering speeds and lines etc.
Then as part of the sprint session we would go out and do our 5 x runs of 5 laps with the instructor going along with us for one of the sessions and giving hints on how to improve.
I believe what they do is let you out on the track as your own group during the sprint sessions to put your training into practice and get some real experience.
Each person will get an instructor in the car for 5 laps and then other sessions where you will be on your own to put the instruction to use on your own while the instructor is showing someon else how to do it.
There will be groups of 5 people in order to have everyone instructed.
We will need to have you all there at 10.00am for the class room session, approx 45 mins.11.00 will be registration at the circuit office, unpack car in car port allocated and get set, 12.00 Drivers Briefing and on track at 12.30.
So as the instructor has said we need to be there for 10:00am i would reccomend we get there for 9:30-9:45 to make sure everyone is there on time.
As we also have happy laps the same morning it's not like you are't going to have anyone to talk to while you wait.

Yep. Won't do Sunday. I did the last Street Sprints with a full day of practice + sprints and I was buggered by the end of it. Well and truly shattered, physically AND mentally. Car was in better condition then me :P

I thought i sent out a private message stating what date it was on but now i am not sure if i did or not.
Will get a bit more organised for the next one.
Only 3 days to go for this one, super pumped to see how it goes!
Make sure you have a full tank of fuel for the day and check your tyre pressures/oil.

Looking forward to this! My reverse gear decided not to work today at one point, so thought I might not be able to get there car out there :P
But I've changed the oil and coolant, have a full tank and the car seems pretty tight, so hoping everything goes to plan. 7am at Lakeside ftw

Jeez you are keen, will be interesting to see how it goes without the worries of other traffic and speed limits.
There should be enough people to give you a push if you need to reverse the car.
I will be there from 7:15 for happy laps.

You can get them on the day. Either a daily, or a yearly license. Go yearly, it's only a little bit more.

I don't believe the training session requires an AASA licence as they said not to worry about filling it out on the booking if you didn't have one.
It may be included in the price of the event or just not needed.

Should be fine. The people who run QR are very casual about these things (not so casual about safety obviously). As long as you can drive, I imagine it will be fine.

Okay, apprently all the spots in the sprint series have been filled up so they can't take any more bookings.
I have sent a pm to those who did not provide their full name in their message to say they had booked as i need this information by this afternoon to let Lakeside know so they can organise the training for us.
Please respond to the pm if you got it (if not, i already have your name)
Be aware that this starts at 10am on the dot and we go straight into a theory lesson for 45 minutes.

Okay, just checked through my old emails and no where did they state that it was $99 on top of the cost for the sprint session + AASA license so we are in the right for that one.
This is the correspondence trail
Hi Clay,
Just write on the form that you want it included and add the price of $99.00 p/p into the total.
Any problems call the QR Office on 5461 9100 and ask for Neil who is our event secretary.

Hi Doug.
I have found the booking form however there is no space to enter the "driver training" description so that we are not charged the full sprint session fees.
Where would you like us to provide that information?
Kind regards,
Clay
So i would like to say sorry to those who went to the effort today to show up and try to do the training session.
It is a shame that there was such a miscommunication from QR's end that we had to pay extra.
Will look into what options we have available to us for a more involved motorsport type event.

Sorry for no show guys. My cars fuel pump decided it wanted to break in the pitlane after happy laps with a friend. 99 dollars later and a towtruck, she rests at the mechanic.

All good Clay thanks for the effort! My car was broken anyway so would not have been able to do it anyway. I will do the Sprints in future but not with Doug.
