Hi all,

Attempting to do a conversion in a mk4 golf from 1.6 to a 1.8t. Brought a front cut gti and just pulled the motor out of it last night :)

So far it's looking like a massive headache but hopefully shouldn't be too difficult. We are following Stan's conversion and he is being a lot of help so far and we haven't even started pulling my motor out yet haha.

nice work mate, any plans for the 1.8t once its in the car?

Getting the motor out is fairly easy. We used the engine mounts to hook the engine crane on to and pulled the motor out. The heater hoses caused a little problem but we got them undone in the end. We forgot about the dogbone mount and wondered why the motor wouldn't come out :/ haha.

So.. Today had to pack everything up and shift it to my place so it's easier to work on. Bit of a pain really..

But started pulling things off my car now, bonnet, wipers, airbox and a few other things..

Going well so far mate!
Your shed needs walls and lights to make life easier.
If the wiring becomes an issue I have a bunch of PDFs, and JMAC was a lot of help - he is a wiring guru

Thanks Stan.

Here are some photos I took just before while getting to the ecu..

This pic shows the box where the body harness goes into the body to the dash..

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/06/3aa3afc1fdf85526-2.jpg

This is the ecu location and if you look closely you can see the channel on the bottom of the window where the scuttle cover clips on

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/06/3aa3afc1fe9d7ff1-2.jpg

This is the grove that sticks out from the scuttle cover and clips into the grove under the windscreen (if that makes sense?)

And this is the wiring that runs into the car

So last night we attempted pulling the motor out..

The dogbone mounts bolts have been previously stripped so I had to unbolt it from the k frame. Also had the wrong size 12 side spline bit for undoing the cv joints. It's an 8mm not a 10mm piece.

Plus cant get the clutch fluid hose off the gearbox either. The cv joints are the only thing holding the motor in the car.

Hey Mick, a cut and change of plugs might work, but map out the wires first and see if they match.

Send a PM to Jmac from Alba European- 0423965341 (Jimmy - shame he is in QLD) - he is a wiring legend and helped me a lot.

Let me know if you need wiring diagrams or manuals, I have a bunch of PDFs hiding somewhere.

No turning back now mate, get those engines swapped! Shame you are in Mildura, phone anytime mate.

Good one!
What are you doing about the ecu plug?

Clarkee_vw
30-06-2012, 10:08 PM
Not really sure yet. Thinking we might just pull the whole harness out of the gti and put it in mine. Probably easier

Stan
30-06-2012, 10:54 PM
simply take the whole branch that goes into the side of the ecu with the different plug - not too huge a job, and you know it will work

If the engine looms are in the front cut, it would be insane to try and swap the plugs over. It'll take 10 minutes to remove the old loom and maybe an hour to run it all back into its new home. Would have been cool to leave it all connected to the AGU when you took it out. Then you wouldn't have to search out where it all goes.

The engine loom is still attached to the engine just the body loom needs to be replaced. Got it out of the gti and it's not as hard as it looks. Will post some pics tonight after work :)

Can anyone tell me where the bcm is located on the mk4 golf?

Stan
04-07-2012, 11:24 AM
Try clearing fault codes and do a reset with vagcom first , then swap the bcm if need be

Stan
04-07-2012, 11:50 AM
Bcm is a black box with 2 wire bundles coming out of it. It is held by 2 screws up under the dash. Take off the plastic cover under the steering wheel. Under that is a metal plate or another big plastic cover. It lives up under there. Pain to get to, hence try code clearing and reset first.

Clarkee_vw
04-07-2012, 06:38 PM
Ok well I've found a black box with one wire bundle coming out but not too, dash is already apart..

Clarkee_vw

Right..

Very eventful night tonight!!
First of all tonight I checked all the earths on the wiring. She started and then died.. Immobilizer was kicking in. So checked that I had changed the instrument cluster like I thought I had, and well I hadn't. So put the gti cluster in and you wouldn't believe it... It started!!

I had to change the transmitter in my key to the gti one but it worked :) now...
So I tried to rev the car and see how she went. Well it's got a cable throttle so now I have to hook it up but otherwise everything is running without problems..

Tomorrow night I'll get the cable hooked up and see how she drives... I can't wait :)

Will let you all know how it goes.. Thanks to Stan and Jmac for helping with this.

Just thinking of it the motor must weigh more then the old one, it's now sitting alot lower in the front.

Awesome mick!
Still do a vagcom code clear, keeps the computer nice.
Your front springs were for the 1.6, so will ride lower, they may be a bit soft too, watch for bottoming out.
Did you upgrade the brakes, they are for rhe old engine as well
.
You might get an error light on the dash for the brake pad wear sensor, if you dont have those hooked up

Well done mate .

Clarkee_vw
05-07-2012, 12:46 PM
Na left the brakes as my model uses the same rotors and calipers. Plus I've already got slotted dba rotors on her.
I've got no error codes at all or no fault lights on the dash. She is a happy car :) just need this cable hooked up and I'll be right :)

Stan
05-07-2012, 01:14 PM
Good job then, looking forward to hearing the throttle is sorted. I found there was a difference between the original cable and the gti one. Ended up cutting it down a bit.

Clarkee_vw
05-07-2012, 05:53 PM
My old motor was electronic throttle so have to run the new cable :(

Stan
05-07-2012, 08:16 PM
Cable is fine, should be a hole high on passenger side of firewall, cable attaches to the top of the pedal lever there, then out and across to the throttle body
Having a cable also means it's not too hard to run aftermarket cruise control, as it actuates the cable: my next project

Clarkee_vw
05-07-2012, 08:27 PM
Stan, the cable runs behind the heater box :( I have to pull it out to run the cable.. It's a big job

Stan
05-07-2012, 09:55 PM
you using the accelerator pedal from the 1.6? On mine the extension of the pedal goes all the way to the top of the firewall and if you prop the pedal in the fully out position is just about touches where the hole in the firewall is - simply clip the cable in that end (simple slotted hole in the top of the pedal extension) and run around to the throttle body.

If you can reach the top of you pedal from inside the car (if yours is different) simply feed the cable through until you can reach it and attach it..... go in through the firewall from the engine bay side and feed it down anywhere pretty much - way easier than feeding it out from inside the cabin.

Hook it up. test that you arnt getting any trouble from other cables etc from behind the dash...

hope it goes well mate - you are pretty much there now

Stan
06-07-2012, 11:00 AM
After our chat last night the only option is to put in the gti accelerator pedal. Love the engine recording, sounds like a spitfire !

Clarkee_vw

Not good mate. There's no hold in the firewall, no brackets on the inside of the firewall and the whole heater box needs to come out.. Bigger job then the engine swap :/

mmm... read this thread - coons88 did a mk4 dash into a mk3, so i would guess there is not much he wouldn't know. looks like it has a 1.8t in it as well.

Well...

Car is off the road again. Alternator stopped working and now got flat battery and the alternator is to hard to get too. Got my old one which is the same but I need to lift the motor up a bit to get to the alternator on the gti.

To be honest after the past 3 weeks I'm really annoyed that it's off the road again :(

Stan
12-07-2012, 12:09 PM
Heartbreaking mate, or you can take the front off the car...
Check your alternator is the issue... At least you have a spare.
Is it your old battery or a new one?

Clarkee_vw
12-07-2012, 12:16 PM
Fairly new battery. Alternator is black no and was smoking a little. We got it off without taking anything else off the car.. Just took time and a bit more effort..

Just need help now working out why I've got no power to the windows or the side mirrors.. None of the door controls on any door work. Yet the door locking buttons on the drivers door work.. :/

Jmac

Hey guys sorry had now phone or Internet and a few family things the past few months..

Car is running perfectly with the gti conversion. Vicroads passed it no problem and have since put a front mount intercooler and got the boost to 13psi. It's off it's HEAD!! Lol

My 22 month old son says "dad car choo choo" lol ;)

Still hot no power windows but need a new control module worth nearly $400 so going without :)

Also still on 14 inch hubcaps so it gives everyone a nasty surprise. Had it dynoed at 168kw atw :)

Still running the stock turbo, using a turbosmart boost tee and bov, a large front mount and new rising rate fuel pressure regulator from turbosmart. Upgrading the turbo soon tho as its not far off needing replacing I think

Your dyno needs a calibration then, I don't expect my chipped S3 makes 165 at the wheels. ;)

It would have to be chipped already to do 165 whp. They pull 190-95 hp at the crank, chipped with standard hardware.

I am suspicious that it isn't totally standard personally.

It shouldn't make 13PSI. Where does the gauge sit with the engine off? Does it have Vacuum too, should be about -20inhg.

Have a look at the ECU does it have evidence of being opened up? Most tuners in the past soldered in chips rather than flashing. I can flash them but I haven't done lots in Australia so probably not Custom-Code.

Gavin

kendog
25-09-2012, 07:40 PM
My understanding is that, a stage 1 chip takes the AGU 1.8T GTI engine from 110kw to about 145kw. And I'm pretty sure that's not at the wheels, so lower again for wkw. It's either had SERIOUS work done, or those dyno figures are WAY off. ..
... Or, it's the 130kw GTI engine, with a chip, but I don't think we got those engines in Aust, def not in the mk4 golfs anyway.

Clarkee_vw
25-09-2012, 08:16 PM
I know I'm going to get told off for doing this... But I may have removed the factory ecu boost controller... That's how it gets to 13psi

Are you talking about the N75? So did you check the fuelling out afterwards? With the N75 disconnected it would normally run at actuator pressure which would be 5-6PSI.

Clarkee_vw

Boost tee controls the waste gate on the turbo.. Allowing you to increase or decrease the boost. They are from turbosmart..

h100vw

Manual Boost Controllers (http://www.turbosmartdirect.com.au/category_s/1886.htm)

So is this the basic $100 or the posh $300 one? I was trying not to tell you off but dude this is 2012 and turbo control has moved on since they first came out. Back in 1985, bleed valves were all the rage on Ford RS Turbos and Renault 5 Turbos. When I was a kid :)

Audi and VW spent more than a few dollars setting these up and I'll admit the AGU is far from the most sophisticated motor out there but a flash is by far the best way to make them go better and stay together.

I know you have access to this stuff cheap through work but you gotta lay off it :D

Cold turkey that's what you need. A good couple of months in rehab and you'll come out like new LOL.

Put the N75 back and sell the shiney stuff, then email me. Do it properly, you have spent lots of time getting the engine in, be a shame for it to give up on you.

Lol rehab :P

I've gotten so used to the power though :) it lights the front wheels up at 60kmh in second gear..

I'm saving to buy a gizmo electronic boost controller instead of the manual one..

Also I've put Nulon 80,000km oil treatment in the engine oil which is the same as Slick50.. Puts a Teflon coating in the engine internals and the turbo. Also using special oil from Penrite that specific for the golf. I treat her right ;)

The 1.8t has been done to death with getting good power out of them, there is the correct way thats been proven to work and be reliable and there is they way that will end badly. Don't head down the second path any further than you have ;)

Good job mate, have you noticed and difference, lag or boost?

I've noticed that its a little laggy to start off with but it's only a little but it feels like its got more pull when you put your foot down. We used the factory pipe in the wheel arch and just added to it. It's 2 1/2 inch to the intercooler then 2 inch out to the intake so that we didn't loose pressure.. Works a treat

So have upgraded brakes to GTI calipers and 288mm rotors. Now just put on a Whiteline 24mm adjustable sway bar :) what a difference! Getting all the Whiteline bushes in the next few weeks and front adjustable sway bar links :)

Just replaced the rubbers in my dogbone mount with some harder polyurethane bushes from Dub Addiction. They make a huge difference in the feel of the engine and better shift response

Nice work, it makes me sad whenever I see mk4s driving around without a front lip. You have to do much trimming around the core?

Clarkee_vw
07-08-2013, 03:10 PM
I know how you feel lol

Yeah it and the bumper needed trimming a fair bit but you can't tell by looking at it. I've nearly lost the lip already forgetting how low it is to the ground.

Cars looking good! Just wondering where you picked up the front lip from? I'm looking for one as well but seems overpriced online.

I've got one (standard) in really good condition you could have for $50. Has one scrape along the bottom. PM me if you're interested

RSB and short shift are 2 of my favourite mods(.... And the garrett:driver:) the rear sway really gives you a lot more confidence turning into corners

All the little things make a big difference. My next project is getting the timing belt changed. Looking at a kit from ECS tuning worth about $409 that has everything including a metal bladed water pump and a gates kevlar racing timing belt. Also has lightweight underdrive pulleys for everything else!

After our chat last night the only option is to put in the gti accelerator pedal. Love the engine recording, sounds like a spitfire !

Are they different between the gti and 1.6? Also what did you do for the wiring in the plenum? Ive done mine and not even cranking :(
