Hi M - the Penrite site says refer to dealer when I go to the search site and put all the details in, your the 2nd tech I know though that has said Sin Gear oil.

The VW part number for your transmission is G 052 171 A2, so look for that on the label or data sheet - it may help you decide which non-genuine oil to buy.

Penrite recommends Manual Gear Oil 70.

I'd just go with the genuine oil. I replaced the gear oil in my mk6 Golf 6spd manual with the genuine oil and it was $17 a litre and the castrol equivalent oil was $29 a litre!

Don't use Penrite Manual Gear Oil70 if their Datatec lube guide says refer to dealer. They most likely changed the make up of that oil and is no longer valid for that application. I use Penrite for some time now and I know that for sure from the Penrite rep.

The 02S gearbox (6-speed manual) uses different oils depending on the gearbox code. Some use G 052 171 A2 as I previously mentioned, while others use G 052 512 A2 - which is half the price and explains Brendan_A's experience.

VW says to use G 052 171 for gearbox code GQM, and Penrite's datasheet for Manual Gear Oil 70 (dated May 2012) says it can be used where G 052 171 is specified.

If anything, it should say "Refer to dealer" for the Golf 118TSI because it uses G 052 512 (unless Penrite Manual Gear Oil 70 is also compatible with G 052 512).

If you want to use it, than call Penrite Technical helpline 1300736748 to check if that is still valid.
I use Manual Gear Oil70 in my 2005 T5 6speed manual (different g/box though) and it shifts fine - it's too filled for life, but I drained it at 20,000km and since than I change oil in it every 20,000km . :)

Funnily enough, it would appear that every 0A5 gearbox (6-speed manual) in a 2005 T5 is specified to use G 052 171 A2, so I wouldn't expect any problems using Penrite MGO 70 - unless the formulation has changed (the datasheet says it's still compatible with G 052 171).
