Hey Everyone,

I have been looking for a daily driver as i am about to start a new job soon and my current car is far from practical.

I am after a MK5 GTI and am just about to put a deposit on one but am having some woes.

The main things that bug me are the engine noise, I can hear the injectors but the engine almost sounds like it is a diesel (is is FSI obviously) and there is also another noise that ticks intermittently at idle. The other thing is the DSG. It seems to shift fine but when at idle and shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse (with handbrake on) the car shudders for 1-2 seconds. It isn't violent but doesn't really seem right.

I have checked everything else and the car had a RWC at Volkstech today with extra attention and reported no real issues.

Could anyone please help out a future VW owner with any tips/advice?

Thanks guys...

Hey mate,

No Internet diagnosis can ever substitute for having VW experts go over a car carefully, but having said that...

The 2.0 TFSI is a relatively noisy engine at idle - the direct injection does make a knock/tap and can sound quite diesel-like, especially when cold.

The 6-speed DSG can also be a bit hesitant and clunky from time to time when shifted from P to R and D. Obviously it should be nice and smooth and quick when actually on the move.

If you're not sure about these issues with the car you're considering, do the dealer lot thing and drive a few other Mk5 GTIs to compare.

Thanks for the advice.

I spent a bit of time searching the web and decided to grab it. Hopefully i will pickup the car tomorrow night.

I'll post some pics up then..
