Im thinking about purchasing ATS Cups for a future mk1 GTI project.

One thing that im not sure of is the offset. What is the recomended offset size for ATS Cups on a mk1 GTI?
Im looking at 15" x 7,0 wheels size.

I had a set of alloys on my Ls measuring 15" x 6.5 and they fitted fine. i wouldnt think 7.0 would be much different.

Im just not sure about the whole offset business.

I have 7inch ATS cups on my 85 cabrio and they look so fat.Sometimes I put the 928 tele dials on and they don't look as good as cups.

the 7 x 15 Cups come in either ET20, or ET28.

The set i got last year are ET 28, I can machine the mounting flange if the rim rubs the arches..

Cost me about 200 a wheel landed here..( new )

Ok after doing a bit of hunting on ebay, I've found a few sets of these wheels 2nd hand as well as new O/S... I'm also wondering about this offset bizzo, would ET 20 or ET 28 be better for a mk2?

Nice wheels definately old skool but maybe a bit too old skool(getting a bit common)ET28 will go straight on no probs as will 7 inch wheels the fatter the better(get over it!!! tho arches may need rolling depending on ride height)

Without wishing to sound negative these wheels need looking after as the alloy isn't up to BBS standards. Then again keep it on the road and it's Kool and the gang. Oh yeah deffo et20 I know guys running 15x7 et25 with 20mm spacers. Looks tough as mate!

Satanstoenail
21-06-2006, 06:03 PM
Cheers for the replies. I wouldn't think they'd be all that common over here would they? As for the alloy, yeah I'd be well careful with em..

About the offset, I'm still confused. Et20 sits out wider yeah? Am I gonna need to roll arches with that?

evorobin
21-06-2006, 08:48 PM
The lower the positve et the closer to the outside of the car. ET 25 with 20mm spacers becomes ET5. ET20 won't need rolling unless you slam it!

et 28 and 20 are going to hit the guards and ruin the suspension geometry.
Stick with et 35

This post is about wheels on a mark 1 .People who don't read the beginning piss me off and I've tried those offset wheels too and they touch. My sons mk1 GTI has 28 mm offset Ronals and the guards have had the lip completely removed on the front and lip flattened on the rear.
Don't lead people up the garden path with your incorrect comments.
And as for mk2s I have 7 inch wheels on my GTI with 40mm offset and they touch going over speed humps.I do know what I'm talking about.
I could go to the trouble of proving it but I shouldn't have to defend the truth.

on a mk2 anything is acheivable , i had et 27 8 inch wide on my mk2 on its guts didnt rub and i will have 9.5 et ???? and it will not rub

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2006/06/backlip009-1.jpg

and yes that look is well acheivable

and a mk1 its slightly differnet but not much just a little less abilitly to slamm it but trye size can help you in that department

Golfwise
26-06-2006, 10:46 AM
Yes you can have that silly look without them rubbing but will it have legal road compliant suspension. To stop the tyre fouling on the guard the suspension would have to be so stiff it would be dangerous.
People want to use their cars everyday in all sorts of situations not trailer them to car shows.Thats what my recommendations are all about.Everyday driving.
And not everyone wants to cut away or extend their guards to do so.
The first cop that sees that wheel poking out past the guard will put the vehicle off the road and rightly so.

Is this the 'silly' look you're talking about? Or are you referring to dubstar's pic?

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/

I don't think that looks extreme or impractical and the wheel isn't poking out past the guard as far as I can see. Yes I'm wanting the car to be my daily driver, so if there's a huge problem with fitting these wheels I wont be buying them. I'm just wondering how other people manage to run them, as they are quite popular O/S.

Sorry if I 'pissed you off' by asking a mk2 related question in this thread. Mods feel free to split it if you want.

No I wasn't refering to you Satan old pal.The silver job on cup wheels looks awsome.
I was having a stir with robin as he was rightly having a shot at me and the star for those awfully overwide wheels, all in fun though as they are good blokes.
As I'm sure we all are.

Rightey dokey. Good to hear.

So I'll ask once again, Golfwise - How do people manage to run these wheels? They are only available in ET20 and ET28. Does everyone get about rubbing tyres on arches all over the shop?

My apologies only glanced at the sig shot of the authors car however I'm amazed that 15x7 et20 is a difficult fit on a mk1. Anyway those wheels are schmick be interested to know how well et28 fits!

Golfwise
29-06-2006, 10:57 AM
Ok here is a sensible recommendation.
ET 28 will need the lips of the guards modified.
Et 35 is ideal and you may still get touching particularly at the rear.
If you want the LOOK you have to go through with these arch modifications but as magazine and VW site pictures show the cars look great.
ET 20 would put the rim of the wheel out past the edge so I wouldn't recommend it.
As my photos show
The rear still touches,
The fronts don't so far,
From the front shot rims don't protrude but are well covered by the arch and
Final shot of whole car.
The rims are 16 by 7 with an et of 40 and the front arches have no lip as it has been removed and the rear has been tapped flat.
If you like the et 28 ATS Cups go for it and make them fit.

Mine are 15 x 7 ET25 with 195/50 R 15 & I had to roll both the front & rear guards & modify(CUT) the wheel arch trims & even still carrying anyone in the back it scrubs unless screw the adjuster's right up on the Koni's. The front's don't scrub at all & are O.K. but stick out about 10mm. I still wouldn't mind it going about an inch lower but the spoiler is already at 90mm.
With 185's it will be O.K. but I wouldn't recommend going any more than et28 on a Mk1 which has been "belly ached" for street use.

HELP IS AT HAND!!! (http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp)

Say you were running std vw fit wheels 15 x 6 et35 and wanted 15 x 7 et28 the difference would be

Inner Clearance: -6mm

Outer Position (position of the outside edge of the wheel) +20mm

So we can gather that if a protrusion of 20 mm is still legal it is ok to order said wheels. If not start fabricating!

Ats cups 15x7 et 28 will fit your mk1
I have a set and if u guys in syd chuck one on and settle the debate. Although the guys are throwing accurate measurements your way it doesnt equate to when you put your wheel on. gaurd rolling is fifty bucks a gaurd if you need.Gti arches will make it look a little better too.
This thread had gone on a little too long anyone want to put it to rest theres only one way to find out.I have photos of my rocco with them on whick is mk1 chassis.
And whoever said they are a bit common may be in picture threads but not on aussie roads.. Get what you like for your car bro dont get too carried away with peoples opinions everyone has one.some forget
