Im looking for my 1st car and i have 20k.
want manual and class so VeeDub is the way to go in my eyes!
really like the TDI (Fantastic fuel consumption! with still nice amount of guts!)
also like the GT (dont like that its Premium unleaded. but has greattttt power...)
Thoughts on which is better for allround use?
Any issues (Faults and common problems) with either of them?
Thanks lhennessy

A 2L TDI will be a lot more reliable than petrol GT. Less things to go wrong plus diesel engines go forever.

The TDI if you ask me. The reliability, good fuel economy and a lot of torque. :)
In TDI look for heavy oil deposit around the intake hose/throttle body. Which shortens the EGR valve and intake manifold flap valve life.
Totally depends where you drive & the length of trips you do.
Don't discount a GTI either - you'll get one for that budget.
maybe keep it to one thread?
cost of fuel is negligable. Have you checked insurance & depreciation?

Why not get the GT TDI. Pretty dam tunable and quick too!
I'd be getting the diesel every time... But then again Im biased :cookie:

Td wouldn't be noticeably slower than a gt. Tuned the difference would be minimal too. Consumption on the Td would be better. Dpf a slight concern that can be looked at with vcds to discount as a problem.

TDI should be more reliable in the long run.

Love my TDI. Gavin is tuning mine next week. You can't beat that winning combo of power and economy and bucket loads of torque from a diesel.

Can't go wrong with either of your choices (GT, GT TDI or the 2.0 TDI) in the MKV all are great cars.
I ended up going with a DSG MK5 GT mostly because my budget wouldn't stretch to a GT TDI or GTI. The GT is a great car, perfect combination for me in terms of fuel economy and performance. I'm getting around 750km out of a tank around Brisbane.
I'd suggest the usual pre-sale checks, full service history from vw or a vw specialist etc. My TSI has been pretty bullet proof although there have been a few issues with the Mk6 Golf and the 6R Polo that have come up on the forum and over at vwgolf (http://www.vwgolf.net.au/forum.php).
All of the above respond well to tunes and many have had them done on the forum with great results.
Either way you'll end up with a great car!

thanks guys :)
id love a GT TDI but cant find 1 in vic. not even one... at any price!
and if i go the GT then its premium unleaded so looking about 1.55-1.65 per liter... i think? and it dosnt get as many kms from the extra cost of premium... diesel is about 2 cents more than standard unleaded but get 900-1000kms for a tank.
the thing that concerns me is the DPF thinking maybe a Delete...
and i love the body kit and wheels of the GT. would like to get gti or r32 rear for the TDI if i get one... or maybe full kit...
intake of course and a stage 1 tune. blah blah blah
drove in a TDI as a passenger on Sunday and thought the power was great! much better than i thought it would be from the storys i hear about diesel.
GTI is out of the question as i will be using the car for my P's (currently on L's) the GT i just need to apply for a exemption. tdi is approved.
Appreciate the help guys!
Thanks lhennessy

There were no DPF in MK5 103kW BKD 2.0LTDI only GT TDI with 125kW had the DPF.

if you can't find the GT TDI then the 2.0L TDI is a great buy and again very tunable. Plus you have no DPF to worry about ;)
fuel and insurance would also be cheaper

Transporter - Oh really?! Awesome, great to hear! thank you very much!
Golfman - thats a big factor for me that i have been looking at. love the fuel economy and the TDI still has great power and with a tune i can get to same power as GTI from what i heard :)
its been hard to find one im very fussy! haha i want under 100k kms and sunroof. hopefully sunroof and leather :) and manual of course!

and manual of course!
Have you tried the dsg? I wouldn't rule it out until you have.
I tried both and much preferred the dsg with the characteristics of the diesel engine. 75+% of them out there will be dsg's...

i haven't actually but i really want to do manual i just love the feeling of control and this is for my p's i want to be able to drive anything so manual license the way to go i think..
and DSG servicing really costly...correct?

Stick with manual. One less thing to go wrong and cheaper to fix if it does, especially considering the factory warranty is probably gone.
Though if you end up liking the DSG, go for it.
Fluid change for a DSG is around $400 every 60 000 km.

yeh i love the thrill of manual more auto is just boring..
also forgot before i was thinking of ERG not DPF sorry.
i know its probs a stupid question but i dont like alot about the TDI faults.
i remember someone saying ERG is bad but what does it do and whats wrong with it and how do i fix or get rid of it (costs aswell if possible.)

I've had manual cars in the past (WRX STI 6-Speed) and I think the DSG is awesome. You can be lazy and just leave it in D or switch over to M and change gears quicker than you could in any manual. As for faults if you maintain your diesel it will outlast the petrol equivalent over and over and over again.
I wouldn't worry too much about EGR, get it turned down if you get a tune or EGR delete. Stick in a Provent200 while you're at it and voila.

Ohk and really wanna get my manual license so i can drive anything! so just go with manual for now. thanks for the input tho i do apreciate it.
how much is the Provent and Voila? also hows the installation?
ForceFed

Provent200 is roughly a couple of hundred. Fitment can be a bit of a pain due its size. But many have done it.
Voila doesn't cost a thing, it's just a saying like presto or Bob's your uncle.
