Hey Guys, Meet ye ole bucket o bolts

It ended its last life as a resonably tidy Gold colored, Golf CL. It's previous owner decided to start on a Track Hack.

http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/th_103145a2.jpg (http://s1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/?action=view&current=103145a2.jpg) http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/th_23b4781d.jpg (http://s1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/?action=view&current=23b4781d.jpg)

1x Stripped interior, MK3 Vr6 Rear beam, MK3 GTI Front Subframe & a ABF w/ 02a later the project came to a halt,

Looking a little something like this...
http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/th_ced7e446.jpg (http://s1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/?action=view&current=ced7e446.jpg) http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/th_e4dc0ab5.jpg (http://s1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/?action=view&current=e4dc0ab5.jpg)

January this year she became mine... and after much "umming" and "ahhing" I threw out the ABF & 02A and have begun peeling her back to nothing to start from scratch....

http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/20fa1ba8.jpg

http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/bf0f2f63.jpg

The Plan.. (Very loose...)

- Pull Glass
- Pull Small Bumpers
- Clean cabin of all old fluffy sound deadening.
- Consider and Prep Body for new Paintwork
- Figure out a new powerplant... Preferably not FSI (evil direct injection sludge monsters)
- Fit new Powerplant & Dash etc.
- Make work..
- Find and Aquire aesthetics
- Strip and paint

Not entirely sure where this is going quite yet.
Watch this space

---------- Post added at 11:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:41 PM ----------

Progress this weekend (not much...)

1. pushed the ABF and 02A further out of the way and closer to the scrap bin.

2. Pulled all the Glass out of the body saving good seals where possible.
- as a result, but expectant, minor rust on the pinched seams that the windscreen mounts on to.
(Looks like im going to have to learn some rust repair skillz)

3. Started pulling apart the front Subframe peices and engine mount, will likely get these items powdercoated in a texture coat black... crinkle coat always looks good

4. Got some MK3 Fat fives sussed to get the shell off the steelies.

5. Also picked up my rallye grille, slampanel, lights etc etc.... will probably get the slam panel powder coated too!

Sounds like a good project:D
Why throw out the ABF??
I'd say stick to a 16v or go 20vt if you want extra grunt.
As you said FSI will be to complicated.

Find out how much to ship the ABF and box to Sydney!

Already Sold both unfortunately.

Could be a 20VT could be a 13b we just don't know

but in all seriousness things will become more clear after I clear my yard of all these excess cars I have at the moment.

Sitting on about 6 :-S

Not much Changed today.

Ordered a Small Sandblaster so i can attack things like the minor rust around the windscreen and clean the old paint off the seat rails etc etc.

Trying to decide on a color I am finally going to paint the car (in a few months time when this has progressed further down the road.

Plans this Week

- Remove; Front Fenders, Doors, Boot lid and various other fittings to be taken off too.

- Install some calipers & Pads on the rear so the hand brake can actually be utilized

Other Plans in the pipeline

- Hopefully start forming replacement sections out of Panel Steel to weld back in where the frame has rotted slightly around the Windscreen.

- Start lifting off the rest of the sound deadening probably with the use of Dry Ice

Hey Chief from Memory Most of it was already gone anyway.

I have a MKIV DBW Loom waiting to be removed from a Wreck at the local wrecking yard... Im just waiting for them to call me and let me know when I can come and pull it out!

Just retaining the MKII Plug ends for the Tail lights/Interior Lights/Door Switches etc..

The MKII Wiring now is all a bit decrepit and perished to re use any way.

On another note

Im down to 4 Colours I like that I will more than likely paint the car in!

Can not wait for saturday to come around

Got a Fair List to achieve by the days end so far!
- Get the Dry ice on Friday and Destroy the rest of the old Sound Deadening on saturday morning
- Remove Front Guards
- Remove Front Hubs and press out the decrepit axles
- Sandblast anythign that needs it
- and finish Shaving ugly brackets off the engine bay!

If time allows make patch template for windscreen rust repair.. and start preparing the patch peice out of panel steel..

Thats probably a fairly ambitious list.. but this project is early days so am still learning how to guage/manage time

---- On another note Lots of Goodies arrived today (un-important **** but goodies none the less!!)

http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/th_bab313fb.jpg (http://s1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/?action=view&current=bab313fb.jpg) http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/th_7995f38d.jpg (http://s1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/?action=view&current=7995f38d.jpg) http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/th_60a71775.jpg (http://s1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/?action=view&current=60a71775.jpg)

Well Saturday came and went, and I feel that Fizz and I achieved a fair bit on the car Started around 9ish finished the day around 5:00pm

http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/c87d7d75.jpg

Still right at the beginning of the prep work stage but i feel this is super important for a better finished result.

So yeah its taking ages but what the hell..

We ran down the road to BOC Gasses and grabbed about 15kg of Dry Ice (Solid CO2),
with the intention of removing as much of the manky and old sound deadening that was stuck-fast to the floor pan.

Poured it on in to all the foot wells and kept on waiting a little bit then moving the Dry Ice and then whacking with the Mallets... It didn't work, so we decided to leave it to "cook" ( so to speak ) for 20minutes and to kill time decided to start preparing the Front Guards/Arches for removal....

If you leave the Dry ice to sit then give it a belt with a Rubber or plastic mallet you will be surprised how the old crap just shatters and can be picked/swept up and thrown away!.

Here are some Shots of the Progress of the Removal and the finished result

http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/th_ab58ce6e.jpg (http://s1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/?action=view&current=ab58ce6e.jpg) http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/th_635c6461.jpg (http://s1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/?action=view&current=635c6461.jpg) http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/th_a29fe82c.jpg (http://s1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/?action=view&current=a29fe82c.jpg) http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/th_de652ea8.jpg (http://s1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/?action=view&current=de652ea8.jpg)

All in all pretty good cleanish and not as time consuming and messy as a scraper and heat gun method
(Which is still needed to finish of the tunnel Area!)

Turns out making dry ice bombs is extremely loud... fun... and easy to make!!!!

Was good to get the Fenders/Guards off too. really expose this bad girl up...
Man the manufacturer went overboard with the Underbody Silicone ****!

Only discovered a pretty minor looking rust under the Passengerside Guard

The Next Job was to get the Driveshafts out of the Spindles... ( I tried removing these the other day and left the shafts soaking in CRC for about a Week, and they still didn't budge!) and even using a puller tool they wouldnt move at all

(Copper Grease goes a long way when you are assembling parts)

Removed the Strut from the Spindle
Removed Tie and Ball Joints
Removed Spindles and Drive Shaft away from the Car in one

Had to apply nearly 15 Tonnes (Indicated by my Hydro Press) just to the god dam old Shafts out of the hubs

Decided I'm going to order all new stuff for most of the part we have been working on thus far.

So that means...
- New Tie Rod and Rack Ends
- New Rotors
- New Calipers
- New Ball Joints
- New Wheel Bearings etc

And While we were at it we thought f*^& it less remove the subframe too... was we can tidy that up as well!
New Paint / re movver

The Shell is now carted around with the use of a trolly jack and pallets :)

http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/e45a1b98.jpg

Next Weekend will Probably entail removal of the Rear beam axle to give that a tidy up too!

New Bearings and probably a powder coat..

Going to have to attend to the Rust as well but for the time being i have doused it in Rust Converter untill i have a day good enough to sand blast it back and see how serious or not it may be!

--------

On another note last week I also had some goodies arrive from Tim @ dubaddiction

juicy!

Another write off of a weekend was on call so half way in to cleaning up the inside of the wheel wells i had to go to the docks and leave fizz and my cousin cleaning it up.

The morning started off alright
Got the rear beam off so now thats ready for a new lick of paint and a rebuild too

These shells are un believeably light 2 of us to pretty much lift it 3 of us to carry it around the workshop with ease!

Did some sandblasting on the discovered rust in the wheel arch looks like its not big enough to even bother worrying about so i etch primed it ( got to play with my new gun and mask)

And will probably zinc it today since it has dried and the wax the crap out if it

Inside of the car looks like a beach at the moment i tested the sand blaster on the seat rails and then etch primed them by by surface corrosion

Also blasted the inside edge of the bootlid at the top where surface issues were showing primed that problem solved interesting usinf a spray gun for the first time ever i didnt realise how far primer paint went! 600ml lasted ages!!! No pics as we didnt achieve all that much and spent the balance of the day

Thrashing my mk2 donor car around the yard hitting static objects and explodong dry ice bombs ... Poor mk2 the engine fl out by the end of the day

Will post those videos later hahah

Also got a mk3 air con condenser

those are some fine welding skills!

Yeah the Fellow who works for me is in the top 10% of welders in New Zealand he is pretty slick

I pulled off another Engine Mounting bracket today (this time the factory VW Cast Iron one)

It appears to have some Stress fractures forming... So we spent about 15 minutes at lunch time drawing up a stronger more compact (but heavier) design for a replacement Mounting Bracket in Mild Steel

this Time I will attempt some of the Stick & Mig welding myself (just for educational purposes)

the only welding I can currently & confidently do is fusion welding with a TIG...

This is the Next Sucker to get a Reboot.

Bit of a curious day today...

After a crap load of running around for work related crap... Fizzy and I finally hoe-d back in to the old Slug!

With all intentions, of cleaning the bottom side, then re-applying Stonechip protection/underseal etc

Re rolled her over
http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/35955f8f.jpg

Oh dear after some prepsol and scrubbing... we decided to take this fight outside and fight harder with degreaser, scrubbing brushes and a Diesel waterblaster...

http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/246048ce.jpg

Well for once in the day we actually started winning however not winning enough to get to the point of re applying stone chip protection.

http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/e23ad440.jpg

http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/aadc0514.jpg

Cheers to fizzy for being so anal retentive with the waterblaster!

While he was unleashing hell on "The Terrible Two's" under-carriage I went and cleaned and resprayed my steering rack just because it is out of the car..

http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/i428/ranton-inc/mkii/49940c45.jpg

So looks like next weekend It will be Under-sealant time and fingers crossed the Frames come back from the the powder coaters so I can get the shell rolling again.. :(

Must say it was bloody nice to roll the body on to its side. i think I will do that a few more times in the immediate future to assist in fitting hardware to the bottom of the shell

Amazing what you can do with a couple of Old Mattresses and some Expanded polystyrene

Also finally found the Sway bar for the MK2 to go on to the MK3 Subframe..

Turns out its a 23mm Cox Sport Front Sway Bar!

She got dropped off to the Powder coater to get a freshen' up also :)

I need to find some new Sway bar bushes that will fit this. and some new/better Sway bar drop links..

Anyone know of any good ones to suit a MK3 GTI Subframe?

Nothing amazing has happened yet.

I don't really have the time,

Im more or less fortunate to have the space available for me to use at work..

the only day I really get to work on it is saturdays and 3 hours on a Tuesday night

other then that I work generally 6 Days a week so there isn't much time available I have had to give up a few other bits and peices

Little bit of progress today

Ran the Fuel lines for the rear of the car... and bought a Brake flaring tool so I can adjust some of the lengths etc etc :)

Missing a few fittings for linking the brake hoses from the body to the rear beam will have to dig for those this week maybe....

Managed to get one of the rear calipers assembled.. really need to get a proper caliper compressing tool ended up slipping a couple of times and chipping the fresh powdercoat which pissed me off a little bit any who..

Rolled the body back on to Jack Stands and with the Help of some of the crew we re-hung the rear beam and the front Subframe...

With the rear beam in place I fitted the calipers and new pads so when the body is finally rolling again I can have a functional hand brake..

Also ironed out the orientation issues with the mounting of the Cox Swaybar. :)

Cheers Coonsy and Glidn.

also Coonsy Fitted the Fuel pump which is a bonus too :)

Bit by bit the body is getting closer to rolling again

I think I will delay the Coilovers for now purchase and fit later...

Yeah time is all it is really,

I have tuesday evenings and Saturdays dedicated to this Job at the moment.. but I still feel the progress is lacking..

I am actually supposed to be having time off this project, but the snow season is terrible at the moment so going to the mountain has been a non option..

That said got over a big mental barrier this weekend... John was kind enough to come around to the Shack and Make swift of the Rust around my Windscreen area.. amazing what can be done in 4 and a half hours with skilled hands & the right tools..

I learnt a fair whack on the way thru also.. which was a big bonus :)

I dont think it looks too bad

when you come to put the rear in your going to like the height considering your going to need the car level and going to need to be under it doing bits and pieces. Well i think so lol

but even if you don't like it later its pretty easy to cut and weld to make it lower.

Love the build BTW

keep it up

Going to drop the Pivot Pins front and rear by about 15 - 20cm on thursday night to see if that evens out the Centre of gravity more so..

its never going to be perfect after all its just a means of rotating the shell to make it easier to work on and ****..

At the moment if the roof was heavier (ie the pivot pins were at the true centre of gravity) the shell would be able to be spun without fouling...

kinda like a dirty girl getting spitroasted :P

It works

Pivot point Adjusted much easier to spin. Clearance is fixed.. and also found i cocked one of the measurements up on the Mk1 build the back was already 60mm lower than the front.. eekk

Corrected and then dropped them both by about 150mm

Also learnt a lesson not to overly weld something up untill your fully certain its going to work.. I burnt up nearly two hours and many Grinding and Cutting Discs cutting the old metal off..

Ran out of cutting discs to properly and nicely cut off the exisiting gussets.. so they can stay there for now and look ugly... maybe tomorrow afternoon Ill cut them off and install the Wheels and mount the Tie bars so the whole body and setup can roll around the Work area.

Just need to add a few extra holes to fine tune locking the rotation of the body.

And decided instead of making a mess of the Mkii's floor trim up the 32 rear pan as much as possible to make it almost fit the mk2

Cracked in to killing the spot welds today... what a **** of a task....

Took a break for a few days to Save my Cousins LHD MK2 GTI 16V

some animal had been at it before... and had unleashed some pretty horrible carnage on the poor thing...

The Gearbox was graunching in to third.. drivers door card had gone saggy and a rust hole in the door happening...

and worst of all some monkey had Welded the subframe to the chassis because it was to hard to find the correct threaded subframe bolts...

:(

However

She is on the road to recovery...

On the list left to do to save this old girl
- Wide Track w/ 5 Stud - Check
- Fix Rust on Door and replace door card
- Install 02A Gearbox and cable shift from MK3 GTI - in progress
- Bigger/Better Brakes all around (MK4 Front and Rear) - Check
- Dodgey Subframe welding fixed - check

The bodged Weldup of the subframe.. (my heart sank when I came across this cluster ****...)

overall, as I have been helping Ranton-inc, I have been learning a lot, that and our Idea's are turning into reality.

Experienced a few set back, Thank fully only minor. Once we have the floor ready, I think the true fun will begin.

Oh so nutty and so cool, basically a catalogued of my favourite VW bits crammed into one.

Lost for words on your obvious care and workmanship, ambition and drive to make it real.

I'll make sure next Auckland visit coincides with a VW meet so I can see some of this VW meat. What side of Auck' are you on? I spent the first 9 years of my life there, love seeing all the 80s and 90s VAG in NZ that we never see here.
