check out
H & R Springs (http://www.h-r.com.au/index.php)
they have a "where to buy" section on the site. Id suggest calling a few of the dealers that are listed to find some.

i rang a few places in adelaide and tyrepower adelaide were cheapest 900 fitted..or 577 just springs alone, from what ive read these are as low as you can go for springs.

hey guys how are things?

im not sure what the official names are for the springs, but as far as the H&R au website shows, for the gti there are only the 30mm lowering springs - are these the ones that you're talking about?

if so, you guys should check out orange-tuning.de (http://www.orange-tuning.de) as these H&R lowering springs are only 170gbp which works out to be $260 at the current rate (then you have to add shipping, but it will still be FAR cheaper than anything that H&R distributors can offer here, unless it's perhaps someone like slammed distribution, who are sponsors on this forum).

i got quoted 900aud for springs, fitted, as well (with a wheel alignment, which is stupid because the springs need time to settle BEFORE you re-align the wheels), but for 900aud you're only a few hundred away from coilovers. i'd suggest either getting in contact with slammed distribution, if you want to deal with someone locally (i got my coilovers from them - very competitive with o/s prices and very good service), or otherwise grey-import them from a site like orange tuning - dont waste money going with someone like bobjane or tyrepower.

regarding the springs themselves, as far as i've seen in the polo section, if you're just going springs, then H&R are amongst the best options as they offer a true 30mm drop as advertised. i've read people being unhappy with eibach, for example - one person on another forum measured the heights after the springs had settled and all four corners were different heights, with the greatest discrepancy being one corner only achieving an 11mm drop (on a spring that advertises 30mm).

additionally, i had weitech springs on my polo before i got coilies, and as good as the weitech product has been reviewed, my springs settled unevenly too, with the driver side being visibly lower than the passenger side.

in terms of "how low can you go", it is recommended that you dont go lower than 30-40mm (maxx!!!!!!) on stock shocks as you are effectively reducing the stroke of the shock absorber, and thus potentially (especially if you go a lot lower) shortening the shock absorber's life. now, no need to panic as it's not as if you're going to put the 30mm springs on your car, and the shocks will be gone soon after - i ran springs on my car and beat the crap out of it, and the shocks were still fine, but it's something to keep in mind.

as for purpose, if you're chasing a "sportier look", then yes, springs can do your $$$ justice, particularly at those overseas prices. because the springs will likely be stiffer, the car will also ''feel'' sportier. however, if you're chasing performance/ cornering grip, then springs alone are actually a downgrade, as now the shock absorber/spring rates will not match, and as such cornering ability will actually slightly decrease. probably not enough for those who enjoy a weekend blat to notice, but them's the facts.

anyway, hope this helps :)
