Hey guys, my name is Adrian and ive been part of this forum for a while, but never got around to creating a build thread..lazy kid much? So a bit of background info...I bought my golf just under 2 years ago after selling my old corolla sportivo..parents wanted something a bit safer and something euro (because they love euros :P) so i got myself a 2008 VW Golf V 1.9 TDI in Reflex Silver. I previously wanted a GTI but seeing that i was still on my P's and had a while till my full license i decided to get the tdi.
I haven't done much so please don't get disappointed! Hope you enjoy my semi-build thread!
Pics of me washing my car for the first time..the day i bought it!

hey mate, i like what you've done so far - very tasteful e.g. steering wheel, lowering, black wheels etc.
when you say you reset your springs, how did you do that?
also, you should take a pic of the car's side on profile in good light - i wanted to see exactly what the wheel/drop combo has the car looking like, but the pics so far make it sorta trick to see.
what other mods have you got planned? is your car a cruiser or do you like chirping tyres in the hills?

thanks scott :D reset springs pretty much means i compressed my springs..so i took it to a garage, they heated up my original springs and winded it down so ive got a smaller spring with the same amount of coils still in tact (: yeah ive been meaning to take better pics of my car i will very VERY soon! I purchased a GTI front and rear bumper last week it should arrive either tomorrow or tuesday..exciting stuff! Honestly, i have a massive list of things i want to do i just cant be bothered posting it up :P my car is a cross between a cruiser and a tire burner..im slowly doing exterior mods as well as saving for big performance parts eg downpipes, ecu tunes etc

Thanks jamie i think the height is pretty good i dont want to go lower cause its already scrubbing a lot so yeah dont want to create any damages to the car..and the bumpers i think were a great catch they really make a tdi look a hell of a lot more appealing compared to the bumper i have at the moment looking forward to seeing your tdi complete jamie :)

Props on the mods.
Not sure why you're trying to make it look like something it's not. i.e. a GTI.
Spend your cash on suspension/brakes/tune and embarrass bell ends in Commodores instead :-)

It was just a matter of time before someone mentioned the whole TDI>GTI thing. There are plenty of changes you can make to your TDI without turning it into a GTI which I will be doing to mine in the coming weeks/months. Stay tuned. Keep up the good work.

Looks good
Nothing wrong with putting gti exterior stuff on it, I don't think thats trying to make it something it's not, its just making it look nicer.
Turbo diesels probably have the most performance potential of anything pplate legal, look forward to seeing what happens to this performance wise. Keep it up.

honestly you guys might laugh at me but i accidentally reversed into the pole pillar thingo found at your local shopping centre. I constantly checked my blind spot and my side mirrors but unfortunately i took the turn wrong and buckled the bumper slightly and obviously scraped of the paint (as well as cracking parts of my tail light) I've never been in an accident nor have i wanted to. I can certainly say I am a safe driver but my confidence on the road has gone downhill. Love my car to bits and to see it like this burns me! Just an unfortunate accident that could have been avoided if i had taken more care. idiot
mk5_tdi
15-04-2012, 07:54 PM
Ah ok... Well don't let it put your confidence down, we've all at least had one accident in our lives; nobody is a perfect driver.
At least with this you can get it fixed, no other parties are involved so no insurance claims and you move on.

I know your pain bro, 4 weeks ago somebody rammed me up the arse, surprisingly my car only sustained rear bumper damage, didn't even touch the hatch.
Her Camry was a real mess, broken headlights/indicators and bent up bonnet.
It got sorted very quickly by my insurance company, it was a bit tricky with the bumper as I too have a GTI valance which isn't standard on my car.
I hope I don't have a frontal smash as the GTI front isn't standard either lol.
Btw the TDI is looking' great mate.

The reason being that the rear steel bar that bolted to the chassis is behind the bumper, but out past the tail gate. Good design imho, for Golf driver that is :-D

Havent been on the forum in ages! Well im back and ready to update moar!
So car hasnt been fixed yet but will be next week! Will be using Poyta's inspiration and will be mounting up a r32 rear valance with gloss black insert, already ordered and on its way! New tails as mine are cracked which have also been ordered (completely black, cannot see through at all, and when lit has the Mk6 R lines) and have placed a deposit for a supersprint exhaust system from Ramspeed! They will also be fitting a milltek downpipe to add onto the supersprint!
Next mods will include minor little bits here and there..major mods include either kw coils with fully adjustable ride height OR airbags :P turbo upgrade with bigger injectors and a new clutch all recommended and purchasing from Darkside Developments (i dont know what each part is called but will be when the time comes to purchase them) VwRacing itg intake kit, RNS510, and looking into custom leather interiors :) all to come within the next long 6 months

Hey Adrian how much was the rear bar? And where from if you don't mind me asking?
Long story short,
My mate went to the uk for a holiday and found a guy selling this r32 oem bar along with some parts he wanted to purchase for his s3. I agreed to wire the money off to him and got it for $500 with all covers and reflectors. I think it was a good pick up! I know some people have tried the aftermarket versions and some have worked well on ebay so maybe try there? Or if your casually passing through the uk haha hope ive helped mate..

Haha thanks buddy the exhaust note is an improvement from the previous catback you can hear the exhaust on idle but still get the diesel clatter, sounds sporty driving normal and when you give it a good hit opens up all you hear is turbo spooling and echoes from all directions haha i love it especially in those quiet streets when theres a few people lurking round..its a head turner thats for sure :) the note though is nothing compared to a petrol engines exhaust note so yeah :P

Wow Adrian, just bloody WOW !!! (Got your PM bro).
Every time I see your car it just looks better and better, the rear looks very tough, what an improvement, I love it. The front end looks great too, and adding the TDI finishes off the grille perfectly, and it's not claiming it's something it isn't so no lie, brilliant.
The last things I would add (to finish the exterior off) would be body coloured GTI/R32 side skirts (they're quite inexpensive) and GTI/R32 hatch spoiler (well worth it).
Oh, and get some europlates to fill that rear bumper up ;)
Your car is an inspiration !!!

Thanks heaps alan your words are always Appreciated thanks so much! You, in fact inspired me with your gti front bar :P i am on the look out for the side skirts, but im taking a different approach! Im looking into purchasing the osir side skirts with gloss carbon inserts that will really make it pop but then i was considering making it gloss black inserts :P ive ordered a gti spoiler so its on its way! OSIR skirts are OK, but if you want real sex on wheels, look at the Oettinger stuff.
Looks pretty good to me, but I would have personally gone down a 1/2 inch on that exhaust. It's a bit over the top.. Dubs are supposed to be wolf's in sheep's clothing, not the other way around.
KW's are worth every penny. Just get ready to kiss goodbye to a fortune when you sell the car though (hang onto it for your kids maybe?)....

Haha honestly ive considered so many times to get rid of the tdi and just buy an r32 or an R but i have so much fun in the tdi and it just wont be the same, hence why ive decides to keep my car and just buy some other car on the side, later in the very far future though haha

Good call.. These oil burners are certainly addictive.
Check up on those Oettinger bits though. They're gorgeous, and some would argue slightly less raceboy than OSIR. That being said, I really do like the interior parts that OSIR make.
There's some gorgeous Mk5 builds out there, just go searching.

Update:
Today, I purchased a 2012 Golf R Gear shifter with boot and got it installed by fellow forum member Oli, who has helped me out heaps in the past. I'd like to thank him for helping me with installation and for selling me a great item! This mod needed a few modifications done to the inner plastic pin that holds the gear shifter up and releases the button to click into gear. I orignally had an OEM T-Bar gear knob with the button on the right side. Now, with the upgraded shifter, the button is now at the front. With a heat gun, some hands, pliers and time, the mod is finally finished! Here are some pics of before, during and after!

Hey guys, ive got a dilemma...im at the point where i want an extra ooomph for the tdi. Am thinking about changing the colour scheme on the dub from red to maybe teal? Was gonna get teal coloured rims, calipers, engine cover, gti stripe etc what are your thoughts? Havent done anything yet just looking for opinions :)

Adrian I think great minds think alike because so fat pretty much everything you are doing is exactly what I'm gonna do(thought about it all before you did it don't worry haha)
Gti front with Gti stripe In yellow, yellow engine cover, yellow capillars... But also yellow walls:)
R32 rear with TBE.
:( but I was thinking I'll do jetta grille for the Gti front
Edit. Just realised I'm getting the same gauge setup :( this is mental haha

iv seen a mk5 on some american forum i think with teal bbs lm (i think) and the gti band on the front bar in teal aswell but no calipers.

Sweet thanks heaps for the opinion didnt realise there was another golf out there like it haha but theres tonnes of stanced mkv's in the UK would be keen to attend one of their meets just for inspiration :P when are the mods coming in mate ?

28-09-2012, 12:19 PM
It's not in Australia so it's all good :) and yeh would love to go the some of the uk meets they are on a whole different level.
Well getting some small things now just need to wait for shipping and put em on/in, GTI head lights that I have just need to put them in, bought an antenna from eBay last night so waiting for that(so sick of that stupid whip antenna.. Just don't go with the car at all.)
Going to order handles, pillars and mirror caps... Thinking chrome for handles and pillars not sure if ill do the mirrors...
Need some more funds to get started on the good stuff. Did a build thread last night have a look for my list :)

There was a black MK5 GTI getting around with this colour scheme. In Brisbane I believe...
They were a mesh style wheel, but not BBS. Owner sold it a while ago. I'll see if I can find a pic of it...

Oh damn...wanted to be the only one in aus lmao! Clearly didnt work out well...we need more stanced dubs ! Im trying to find pics of teal rims on any golf mkv and cant find any its always electric blue or red haha i know MK5_tdi has blue bbs super rs on his and they look good but his car is that same colour so works well! Taking a chance on the new look will order next week

29-09-2012, 05:46 PM
anyone have any ideas as to how i can re-trim my GTI front grille stripe from red to teal? Tried asking around to get it wrapped but wasnt advisable...any other ideas? Could get them repainted i guess...and also wanted my front and rear tdi badge done in teal as well (the red "DI" in "TDI" if that makes sense)
lhennessy
29-09-2012, 05:50 PM
Why don't you go to a hardware store and get some electrical tape to see how it looks? If that seems to hold then even better haha
I was gonna do that. Need to get the bumper first tho haha what's the stripe actually made from I havnt been close enough to touch or see in enough detail.
If you can actually take the stripe out lemme know coz I'd just spray it then :)
adrian13
29-09-2012, 06:06 PM
Could do that but dont think electrical tape will look very nice haha its built in with the honeycomb grill so yeah can take the mouth grill off but not the stripe itself...might have to ask a panelbeater to spray it for me, that and the tdi badges
lhennessy
29-09-2012, 06:16 PM
Yeh I was joking hahajust more to see the colour.
You could just get a spray can and do it just take the grille out and them tape it all off
Gigitt
29-09-2012, 06:42 PM
i remeber seeing others trying to recolour the stripe in the grille.
lecky tape - ghetto will last about 2 weeks then start looking crap as the edges peel back does not have good sticky properties and over time will break down into a gooy sticky mess.
someone did take it off but had to break all then liitle clips that the strip is held on by - biatch of a job - i think they are those melted plastic tabs. painted it then stuck it back with some hot glue or something!
doing a good mask job then Sraypainting it OR Plasti-dip, is the more common option overseas.
lhennessy
29-09-2012, 07:27 PM
Yeh that's what I'm thinking either just simply spray or plasti dip
adrian13
29-09-2012, 08:01 PM
Not keen on snapping clips but may have to resolve to it...plastidip dont stock teal as of yet and its hard to get tape or 3M wrap in that colour so i will resolve with spraypainting it hope it turns out okay haha
lhennessy
29-09-2012, 08:09 PM
+1 I will be doing it when I get my GTI front. It should be fine along as you mask it off really good. Just be very particulate about not letting any space for drip or over spray.

You'll end up snapping some tabs if you change the front grills. Very frustrating...
The red strip on the GTI grill looks like a PITA to get off so id be interested in some tips if you have a crack.
If you google "Mk5 teal" there are a few golfs with teal accents. Looks good.
lhennessy
30-09-2012, 04:06 PM
Yeh I'm planing on just leaving it in to not do any damage and just spray but now I'm thinking of just doing a chrome grille (r32/jetta)
mk5_tdi
30-09-2012, 04:20 PM
The bad Adrian has is the same one I purchased. The red strip is easy to remove. I've done it and had it painted body colour
adrian13
30-09-2012, 09:50 PM
Oh sweet man how'd you manage that? Would be interesting to see it..might troll your page for a bit :P i wonder if badges can be painted and if so how complicated they will be...
mk5_tdi
30-09-2012, 10:13 PM
once you pull the center grille off, spin it around and you will see all the clips going into it from the red surround. Use use a small flat headed screwdriver and push them out, starting from the top two sides first.
Can show you a pic of mine once it was finished if you want?
adrian13
30-09-2012, 10:36 PM
That would be great champion! Thanks for letting me knkw otherwise i would've rippes it off the grille haha
mk5_tdi
01-10-2012, 10:08 PM
Not best pics, however first is of the trim painted on grille and second of trim itself.
You can see the little tabs it has, just poke them through with a small flat headed screw driver and it'll come out
The red you wont see, it's not painted cause it was taped down so could be painted properly

What rims did you end up getting?
adrian13
02-10-2012, 07:03 AM
I ended up getting the BBS LM's in 18" should look good i hope it does anyway haha should come within a month see how it goes...may take a bit longer as they will be painted as well just gotta get some spacers for skme offset haha
mk5_tdi
02-10-2012, 09:04 AM
Ah nice, they will look good
What sizes/offsets?
adrian13
02-10-2012, 09:17 AM
Haha honestly, i have no idea when it comes to offset measurements and what not. Ive spoken to supplier and they have done one before for a mk5 in the uk that had slight offset and they sent me pics with the rims on that car and it looks great so i ordered the same dimensions, only to know that i have no clue what they are haha! If it isnt out enough ill be buying spacers for sure! I know my lack of knowledge downgrades me hard but meh haha
mk5_tdi
02-10-2012, 09:41 AM
Nah that's fair enough
Got pics of the mk5 they sent you?

This man speaks the truth. Took mine off today and, to be honest, it doesn't even look that bad without it.
Once you get the first two or three off, you can simply pull the strip and they rest will pop out.
Its the fog light grills and the lower middle grill where you may snap tabs.

If it's the GTI front end and just black you should be able to pick some up from autobarn or the like. I know the one down the road in Melbourne has some that fit the EIGHT holes the dealer drilled in mine. >_<
Then just grab some gloss black paint and primer and you'll be sweet.

True, and much like my GT they don't seem fast but they are deceptively quick - you really need to look at the speedo to be reminded. About the only car that I've driven that actually felt fast was a Lotus Elise - wasn't the quickest thing i've driven but by god did it feel like it.

Have indeed read your review of both, Poyta. I disagree with the surge of power thing though. My former neighbour had a GT DSG Sport (TDI) and I felt that the power was a bit underwhelming. That's obviously because my DD back then was a modified Euro-R, but I was kind of comparing it to the GTI. I felt that the GTD comes a lot closer to the GTI than the GT Sport TDI does, but that's simply my opinion. I love the interior styling of the GTD as well. Those GTI seats are just so great.

Well pretty much, i got messed around with for a couple of months. I made the payment for the rims round 2 months ago and received my refund a few weeks back. Got told stories about how my wheels would arrive on one day but got stuck at customs for a while and would be shipped the next day. That story carried on for 4 days, which led me to question whether the wheels existed or not based on the rumours going around about SpeedSource. Later that weekend i spoke to Jason and he said everything should arrive on monday. Monday came and i messaged jason in regards to the wheels. I received a message back from Jasons number but was written up by another guy named Dean. He told me that Jason tried commiting suicide and is now in a comma and is on his way to the hospital. I knew then that these wheels were all a scam, it was just too coincidental. Jason called an hour later saying he would chase up on the wheels and call me back (thought he was in a comma?) bugged him all day about giving me a tracking number for the wheels so i know they are actually here or not. Kept brushing it off and said he would get back to me with the number. That dragged on from 10am-5:30pm! Finally he called me and said he checked the tracking number and it was still at customs. After saying that i asked him to give me the tracking number so that i could check. He said he would get back to me. An hour later i sent him a rather nasty message demanding to give me a full refund. He agreed but said it would take at least a week. I wasnt happy about that so made sure the full amount was in within a couple of days. Received half the money after 2 days and received an email saying the rest would come in 3-4 days. Angry, i told him if he didnt give me a full refund by the day i messaged him i would contact the police. He deposited the money within an hour. Havent heard from him since :) very messily written up but hard to explain in words would rather describe in person hahaha

bringing this thread back to life...mods in order within the coming month
-ordering new rims next week
-getting my roof wrapped in Gloss Black by Carbon demons
have decided to keep modding my oiler, just love it to bits! Brake upgrades are now in play and will be discussing options with a few places soon. I really wanted to ask you guys a serious questions about wheel fitments though, i have received emails from the guy im ordering the rims from (ill tell you guys all about it after i receive them ;) ) and the fitment option is:
Front Wheel Size: 18-inches
Front Wheel Width: 8-inches
Front Wheel Offset / ET: 35
Front Wheel Center Bore: 67.1
Rear Wheel Size: 18-inches
Rear Wheel Size: 9-inches
Rear Wheel Offset / ET: 35
Rear Wheel Center Bore: 73.1
Stud Pattern: 5x114.3 PCD
Will these fitments work on our MKV golfs? Will be getting the guards rolled, but just wanted to make sure these stud patterns and offsets will work with the dub...i could use wobble bolts but would prefer a good fitment! thanks guys
ForceFed
05-01-2013, 04:45 PM
You will need adapters to cater for 5x114.3. VAG is 5x112. +35 is a very aggressive offset. Not sure if it will work. Maybe? Centre bore size for your car is 57.1 from memory. So you will need hubcentric rings also. Sounds like it good get quite expensive.
mk5_tdi
06-01-2013, 07:53 PM
I'm on 8 +30 now and pretty low, it's not too bad fitment. But then 9 +35 sits out 8mm more, so just camber and roll guards
Also just run wobble bolts and hubcentric rings to fit them, cost about $150 for everything, I did it on my BBS Super RS's and they worked fine for nearly a year before I changed my wheels.

Was going for 18x9 +35 with kerscher front guards (25mm wider) to fit this size, however, it all added up way too high with paint so ive decided to play safe and run 17x9 +45 and run adapters. Will be picking up the wheels tomorrow morning! The guys at spinning wheels and tyres will be waiting for me to arrive with the wheels this saturday to discuss tyre options. They have said 245s should be okay but i will need to exensively roll my guards with a slight flare. Stay tuned guys this should be an epic turn around for this thread for once haha

hey guys, so i ended up lacking a whole lot of sleep Friday night and picked up the new shoes early saturday morning! Couldn't update you guys and show how excited i was on the day as i had to leave for Newcastle as soon as i got home from picking them up...long story short, i picked up a set of Enkei RPF1's in Matte Black with red enkei stickers (which i will have to stick myself) in 17x9 +45 offset. In saying that they are a 114.3 PCD and therefore i will be purchasing a PCD converter to suit 5x112. Heres some pics...

Haha i know what you mean i thought it was strange too! But the offset on the 18x9 was +35 and with adapters im looking at +20 which wont work haha thats why i chose the 17x9 +45 and enkei have discontinued their 5x112 pcd range which is a bummer! Adrian13 checking in again...
Hey guys, been off for a bit but have come back with some new ideas, a lot more contributions and the usual banter with you lot! I'd just like to say that being on this forum has definately opened huge avenues for myself and my TDI. I have found much resourceful information on this forum and in return, i'd like to give back whatever knowledge I can to help others out too.
Now my build thread,
There has been very little advances with this build on my TDI. The 17x9 Enkei RPF1's still have not been mounted on my car as many complications popped up since I purchased the set. These problems include the PCD, tyre choices and guard rolling/flaring. I have, however, found the antidote to all these problems and will be getting the rims wrapped in tyres on thursday morning, then awaiting for friday morning for some guard rolling/flaring, wheel alignment and camber adjustments...all in time for Top Secret Imports and The Low-Down's Mega Meet!
Purchasing new rims
New rim decisions are very hard to make, and this is why it is crucial to determine which rim is best suited to you and what your trying to achieve. Changing rims will alter the appearance of your car immensely, and depending on your rim choice, it may or may not be what you were trying to achieve...hence why these decisions should be made carefully. Within the last 2 and a bit years of owning my TDI, I have found it quite challenging to achieve the "right" look I have been searching for. A new rim choice was on the table and i decided to take that path. Once i started looking for rims, many came in mind: BBS LMs, HRE, GTC and VMRs. I decided then and there that I was going for the BBS LM look. However, after getting quoted for an original set, my thoughts began to change. The price was too high for my budget so I looked into purchasing a replica set. After much research, I had decided to completely veer away from BBS LMs as the risk of damage from a replica set was too high. I finally came down to a rim choice that I had never even thought about buying, a set of Enkei RPF1s. I love the JDM scene and everything about it. What I love about the Enkei rims is that you have that tie in with the JDM scene as well as the European world. The rims just seemed right in my mind, so I purchased a matte black set in a 17x9 +45.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2013/02/46765_4934976544223_914416776_n_zpsa91e8-1.jpg

I bought these rims from Budi at Autotecknik. His customer service skills and wealth in knowledge to wheel fitments was sensational, and I would recommend him to anyone looking into purchasing good quality Japanese rims. Here is there website: AutoTechnik.com.au - SITE UNDER DEVELOPMENT (http://www.autotechnik.com.au)
PCD complication
As you all may have known already, there was some complications in regards to my PCD for the rims. I purchased the Enkei RPF1s in a 5x114.3 stud pattern as Enkei themselves had discontinued their 17x9 range with a 5x112 PCD. There were 3 options to get around this problem, these being:
-PCD converters/spacers
-Redrilling the stud patterns OR
-Wobble Bolts
PCD converters/spacers: Because the wheels were a 17x9 +45, the width on the rims themselves were too wide to run on standard OEM guards, so with an extra 15mm spacer (with a final offset of +30) this would have been way past impossible to fit! The other option was to purchase Kerscher guards (25mm wider guards), but unfortunately I dont have that sort of coin laying around at the moment
Redrilling stud patterns: This idea seemed okay as i had redrilled my last set of rims, however, this option causes a lot of damage to the rim itself causing uneven wear over a long period of time around the stud holes themselves and this will also cause the original paint to strip off. I did not want to damage an original set of Enkei rims so i veered off that route as well
Wobble Bolts: This was my last option, and after watching extensive tutorials and researching everything there is to know about wobble bolts, I decided to go ahead with this option. Wobble Bolts work great because they allow you to have a lot more options to a vast range of rims rather than a selected range. Wobble bolts use a floating conical seat collar that allows movement for up to 3mm wider or shorter of your cars standard PCD. I purchased 20 of these bolts from ECS Tuning, where they have also included a tutorial about the bolts themselves. I haven't used them yet as i haven't even got tyres yet, but I'm sure they will work great! Heres a link to where i purchased them from: Home Page > Search > Wobble Bolts > ES#2130074 Wobble Bolt 14x1.5x27 - Priced Each - D39LE (http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Wobble_Bolts/ES2130074/)
And this is what they look like

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2013/02/IMG_1872_zpsb3dd4359-2.jpg
Tyre Choices
Tyres choices have been pretty hard for myself as the look I'm going for now is a cross between the JDM scene featuring a race-car like appearance as well as tying in with out european scene. I was after a set of 245/40/R17 for this particular set of rims. I definately had a soft spot for the tread lines on Street Semi Slicks so I looked into buying a set. The one I was particularly after was the Hankook Ventus R-S3. I have searched far and wide for these tyres but cant seem to grab a hold of them. All tyres shops in my local area and across NSW have been sold out or out of stock of these tyres, and shipment for these will be in by the end of the month which is a wait I'm not prepared to take. I didn't like any other semi slicks so my next choice was a set of Kumho KU39. These are apparently pretty good tyres according to most tyre shops and obviously word-of-mouth. At this present moment, I will be purchasing either set..im just waiting to see if my local tyre shop can order in the Ventus R-S3 in time for thursday morning. The tyre shop i will be going through with is Blair's Tyres in Cabramatta. They have dealt with a lot of my friends and family's cars and have only heard good things about them. Their prices a pretty well priced as well compared to other tyre shops.
And now the present...
I have applied the red Enkei stickers provided by Enkei. In my opinion, they change the entire look on the rim. This colour scheme will definately pop on the TDI when they are mounted on. Here are some pics:

After reading all that all i want to do now is see some pics !!
definitely like where this is heading
Ive been looking at some rims lately too, and have decided to go down the jap path with wobble bolts also.. I was looking at some Work Kais but we'll see how that goes
Have you test fitted 245's to your car ? Would be a bit of a tight fit eh

nothings impossible if you set your mind to it haha Work Kais look great on a mk6 i think wobble bolts will definately do the trick! Theres just something about golfs and the JDM scene, they just work? I have test fitted 245s and they scrub like HELL all round! The rears are so much worse though...front guards will be rolled completely with a 5mm flare which will just have it sitting over the tyre, i want poke haha and at the rear...nothing a little 3 degree camber and some rolling cant fix :)

Summary on Enkei RPF1 + Hankook s1 evo2 K117 tyres
I am very happy to announce that my decision in purchasing a set of RPF1 was by far the best decision i've made so far in regards to the total appearance and functionality of a set of wheels. Apart from a few bumps on the way, fitting these rims was not such a problem at all! This entire modification was a lot easier than I anticipated.
Few bits of housekeeping, I picked up my rims from Dave at Reflect Effect for Optiguard. This product is definately recommended to anyone who enjoys cleaning their cars minus the massive time and hassle of scrubbing off every speck of dirt stuck to your paint. Apart from having it applied to the entire exterior of my car, Optiguard on the Enkei RPF1s have proven to be so much easier to clean. Despite being a matte black rim, brake dust seems to just fall off with every wash. I've only really washed the rims once (today after the past few miserable rainy days) and they have really turned out to be a treat. The matte finish definately is accentuated with the Optiguard sitting on top.
Tyres was my next step to having these Enkei's on my car. It was a very lengthy process as it was almost impossible to find a set of tyres I liked. I searched for a couple of weeks for a set of Hankook Ventus R-S3 but it proved to be very difficult as ALL tyre shops had sold out and were awaiting delivery from Hankook, which would have taken an extra 3 weeks! I didn't want to wait so i searched around for other tyres. I looked into Dunlop Direzza Sports and Bridgestone Potenza Adrenalin's but i couldnt find anyone with the Dunlops and the Potenzas were a little pricey for me (mind you i could have ordered them from Tire Rack but wanted the tyres in before the Mega Meet which got cancelled anyway...) I soon began to lose hope and give in to the wait but received a call from Jax Tyres at Narellan who have helped me extensively in finding a set of tyres I liked. They recommended the Hankook Ventus S1 Evo2 K117. I read about that specific tyre and it seemed to be perfect! The tread lines were also not that bad. I gave them the go ahead and then came my set. I specificaly wanted a 245/40/R17 for a fatter looking tyre. Being an inch smaller, i figured fatter tyres would make up for lost space between the guard and the rims and i've always liked that racecar sort of look. The Hankook K117 are definately an upgrade from my Kumho Ecsta's. Immediately after driving my car with the new tyres, I could tell the difference. The Hankook tyres are a much more quieter, smoother tyre compared to the Kumho tyres. I can no longer feel any bumps in the road and have also slightly noticed better fuel consumption, but ill have to see by the end of the week how much K's i've managed to save. The Hankook's also have a lot more grip on the road on both dry and wet weather. The drive home was a disaster with all the rain and winds but the tyres didn't fail to please me.
Fitment was fairly straight forward with the wobble bolts. I got confused as to how they were meant to bolt on but with a bit of jiggling around i got them to work. The design of these bolts in my opinion is quite smart! This just opens up a new avenue to a vast range of rim choices rather than sticking to certain styles and brands. Using wobble bolts allowed me to purchase a rim that could very well start my path to tying in the european and japanese world together. Once the wheels were mounted, i couldn't see a point in getting my guards rolled or flared. There is definately enough clearance for the rims, however, I do need to lower my car slightly. The gap from before and after definately shows a difference. To pull off the desired look i was hoping to achieve, I will be looking into purchasing a set of Coilovers, particularly KW ultra lows, and adjust the height accordingly. With a 245/40 tyre, the rear definately scrubbed which would be an issue. To help with fitment, Jax Tyres adjusted the Golf's standard eccentric bolts at the rear and adjusted the camber to -3 degrees. This helped stop the scrubbing as well as looking a little stances, however, it still needs to be lower to fit completely right!
If anyone has any questions regarding the rims or tyre choices, dont hesitate to PM me :) Here are some pics taken last night at Ikea carpark, Rhodes.

Thanks Poyta, i think the winglets just give that aggressive racecar look and thats pretty much why i wanted it to badly...to make the front end look aggressive because its way to cute and curvey haha! I didnt really want to do a rear wiler delete but i broke my wiler pretty much and cant be bothered replacing all those plastic bits...so gonna get rid of it. The car was dropped off Monday morning for paint and installation of my newly added front lip and winglets. I also booked it in for a couple other things that ive been meaning to do for a while, these include:
-GTI Front Mouth piece: When removing my number plate holder, the holes beneath it all became very visible (obviously) and i didn't want to purchase plugs for it, so I decided to get them filled in with a plastic filler and to be repainted in a glossy black finish.
-Rear VW Emblem: To match both the front badge AND the black/silver/red theme I've created, I decided to get the rear badge resprayed in a gloss black finish as well. In doing so, the rear badge will become completely black! I didn't like the idea of having an awkward black circle on the centre of my boot, so i purchased silver badge inserts to bring out the glossy black VW.
Car is to be complete by Friday as there were a few complications that popped up in regards to the oem front lip being removed. The existing front lip is integrated with the front bumper itself, making it a complete piece! However, the rest of the lip easily clips off the tabs. In order to get the lip off, they will need to cut through the front lip and smooth out the bottom of the front bar were the lip previously existed. Only then can my new lip be fitted ARRGGHHH!

Ive got good news and bad news for everyone, mostly bad news though :( bad news, i was pulling the plunge on installing the lip and winglets. Why? Because my gti bumper is not an oem bar, but an aftermarket bar. What has happened is my aftermarket bars existing lip is actually a complete piece with the bumper itself. Problem? The lip DOES NOT unclip and therefore the lip cannot be installed. Next method was to cut off the lip, smooth out and bolt on but theres no room for it and the lip will stick out 1.5cm past the bumper itself. Good news is i have decided to purchase an oem gti bumper and get everything installed properly. More bad news is i am broke as hell as everything came and hit my bank at once! So from an $800 job, turned into a $1000 job, and now at $1400! Good luck to me. I hereby declare myself mod-free for the next 6 months.

Btw, a genuine GTI bar will need some trimming around the radiator to fit properly (this happened to me), your panel shop should have no problems doing this, it's just a few inches of plastic need cut away either side of the radiator.

You'll probably need to buy new fog lights and fog surrounds too (sorry for the news), the fogs that came with the one piece bumpers have a different lens angle.
The first bumper I bought from Body Kits Kingdom (currently on my car) were all separate pieces i.e. bumper (which needed trimming around the radiator) and lip.
Ihe one piece bumper I bought from a forum member I sold on, I noticed the projector fogs from the one piece have a different profile/ angle to the supplied reflectors.
I've since replaced the aftermarket reflectors (in the photo's) with genuine Hella reflectors.

Relax bro, obviously try the fogs and grilles first, I'm sure your current grilles (all of them) will fit into the bumper, I'm only concerned with the fog lights, actually if you're using your current fogs and grilles there shouldn't be an issue.

Haha na im all good, just upset this car keeps going round in circles for certain bits and pieces. Im pretty sure the grilles will pop in perfectly, and the fogs are sitting in those grilles so im sure it will be fine :) the front bumper was already at the body shop as they wanted to compare fitment of the lip on a genuine bar vs aftermarket bar. In the end they didnt want to touch my bar as once its damaged i cant exactly sell it. Purchasing an oem bar is a far better option though

So after a week and a day of waiting, I finally picked up my car this morning! I didnt get much time to enjoy it in the light as i had to flee off to work as soon as i picked it up. In my opinion, I think it came out pretty good considering all the hiccups on the way. The paint match was spot on, the lip sits very flush with the bumper, the winglets have been bolted directly to the front lip which makes it extremely sturdy compared to many others ive seen on other cars, the front gloss black badge ties in well with the silver/black/red theme and the rear badge came out nice as well. One thing i didnt like was the 3M silver inserts on the rear badge, they almost look white in photos and are a very pale silver against the reflex silver. Still looks okay but would have preferred it to be darker! All in all i think it pulled off well. I just need to master going up and down the driveway now! Took me about 40 mins off trial, error and scrapage before i figured out a technique. Heres some iphone pics that didnt turn out well :P :

I have been watching from a distance for a while now. I think its time for me to pay you a compliment. I give your car a 6.5 out of ten. A few of the things on your car stand out in a good way. Others, well ... Do you love men?

Each to their own, im happy to have covers and i gladly remind people that they are covers. Unless somebody is happy to buy me a bbk, the covers stay on.
