I thought i should put a thread in the new section of the forum, just to get things going

I have a 1991 BMW 318is, my daily, loving every min of it. In the last 2 years i have replaced a lot of things on it, just like you would on a 20yr old car. I love this little car, handling is awesome, dare i say better than my R32? :) maybe not, but its def better balanced and you can feel a massive difference in corners.

Here is a pic:

I've had a couple of 318is's. I love em. Would like a 325is. Just trying to find a good one isn't always easy. Great little cars.

Really enjoy driving the car

I was very fortunate that, being a grey import, it was a genuine Motorsport. The Australian compliance ones were actually faked up by BMW Australia

Balk, I remember when I had the car advertised, I got an offer for the wheels alone for $3k LOL

I'm driving around in a small bumpered 318i. Love it to bits, but would REALLY love the M42 twin cam in it, just for that bit of extra pep ;)

mine has an m42 in it, nice engine but not enough torque on low revs and lifters dont last very long.
If you are planning to change the engine go for an m50 from an e36. Fits straight in, lots of people have done it and there is a ton of info on the net

Those are the best looking wheels IMO. Genuine RSs?

yeah genuine RSs.

The guy that bought it from me wanted to classic rally it - had contacted BMW Motosport UK and got all the original build spec confirmed

yeh at some stage Im planning on doing the M44 from the 318ti along with front/rear subframes. Aparently it bolts straight in :D

balkanac

it does. The 318ti is half e30. See if you can get the front and rear hubs off it, they bolt on to the e30 and give you 5 stud wheels. so many more options than stupid 4 stud

YouTube BMW e30 v8 dyno. That's my old touring which I wish I brought back.
Specs:
635csi leather Recaro seats
E30m3 5 stud conversion
BMW system II WHEELS WITH DUSTBIN LIDS 17x8/9 et 24/15
m60b40 plus manual box from a 740
Full racing dynamics body kit
Blistein b8 shocks with H&R -40 springs
Fake suade interior
Smoked lights f/r
3.15 lsd diff, though had 4.1 in there at one stage which made 1st and half of 2nd useless!

Used to keep blowing driveshafts until someone told me that the z3 diff swap needs the e30 flanges!

Other wheels I had were Rondell 058- a kind of BBS knock off but 17x9.5 et 10 all round and Racing Dynamics 17x8/9 et23.

I miss that car! Would play tag with porches on the m1 and have a blast!

Hi all,

I also daily an e30: 325i. It is an absolutely awesome car, very reliable, although, similarly to balkanac, I have also had many of the old parts replaced with new (again, nothing you would not expect to eventually wear out on a nearly 25-year-old car). The car is 100% stock except the Bilstein sport shocks with Eibach lowering springs, Z3 shifter and some cosmetic mods. It came from the factory with sport leather seats and all the power options (electric sunroof, mirrors, windows, etc.) Here are some pics:

Nice Dom.

I had to retro fit electric windows and front fogs into my old 318is. But once done plus the addition of the front lower spoiler I was happy, never got around to updating the suspension. If only I could fit it again. :(

My weekend fun toy:

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2011/09/IMAGE_031-1.jpg

The GTD has better low down torque (no great surprise there) but there's no comparison for top end power (again, no great surprise there).

The GTD is easy to drive quickly, but it gets loose at the limit. When I'm heading out for a fun drive through the hills, there is no contest.

Just found my old E30 318is on carsales ! It seems to have travelled back in time but! The K's are now alot less than they were, in fact so far back they are at a figure that would have clicked over before I even bought it! I bought it in Jan 04 and stuck around 50 tho on it a year for around 6 years.

Still looks good but.

i replaced the centre bearing on the driveshaft over the weekend, not too hard, but i didnt put the 2 pieces of the driveshaft exactly the way they were. Felt like the car is gonna fall apart from all vibrations!! Had to take it off again and do it properly. What a PITA!!

this is why i dont like engine swaps. It never works properly and you are usually left without something. That v8 will not fit in the engine bay just like that

ozgti
11-05-2012, 09:12 PM
Yes it does. The reason for the fire was the alternator shorting out on a hose clamp. Else it ran fine. It's been in 3 different E30s since. It's probably the best engine conversion for a touring/cabby as they are better balanced than a sedan body.

What do you mean by doesn't work? I was playing with porches and m5s up and down the M1.

In terms of fitting, slight massaging of the trans tunnel, E30.de engine mounts, shortened shift mech and e36 328 drive shaft to a z3 3.15lsd.

I was probably one of the first to get it working and driving in the UK. There's lots of people in the UK that can attest to it working.

it will never work like it came out of the factory, almost every time you need to sacrifice something like aircon, PS, etc

i recently replaced the centre bearing and guibo on my e30 and after that it felt like its towing a trailer!! Took the driveshaft off 4 times, checked everything, made sure its aligned properly and still the same!! Till my dad suggested the handbrake was too tight and after i loosened it the car is not struggling anymore!! Drove me crazy for a month!!

Parents had a 320i E30. Nice car. These modern cars have nothing on the ride and cabin quietness of the late 80's BMW.

They now own a E39 540i. Very impressive car. Has plenty of power but still gets 8-9L per 100k. Nice fora 4.4 V8

My dads had a couple of M3's and an M5 over the years... Loved the M3's (an E36 and an E46) but hated the complexity of the M5 (it was an E90) and sold that to buy an E63 AMG, I miss the M3's and wish I had some photos of them :(

Well, I managed to get it all in and worked better than factory. Even without servo assist ( a sacrifice I wanted to make as I was running m3 brakes) it was miles better than my m20b25! Handled better to boot!

Just picked up my Golf last week, so sadly my beloved 318is will have to go to a new home. Wasn't fast at all, but as you all know absolutely beautifully balanced car. It's the slowest car I've driven but also the most fun. Unfortunately I need my car for work and a coupe just isn't practical.

Maybe one day though I'll get another E36..but it'll have to be the M3 with 6 speed box :)

Thanks - the E30 is actually a work in progress. Its one of the oldest in existence - has a Jan 83 build date, and only has 50k on the clock. Needs the suspension and brakes done, and have a 2.8 stroker going into it. Should look stock, but will be pretty quick.

I also have a BMW as my other car. It's a 2000 E46 330ci convertible and has served me very well for the last 2.5 years.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2013/01/ri4uht-1.jpg

I've had to put it up for sale (2000 BMW 330Ci E46 Convertible (http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/bmw-330ci-2000-14035000)) to fund the GTI and will probably get a second car for track duties as I was always concerned about putting the E46 into a wall.

One of the biggest differences (apart from it being rwd and a coupe) I've noticed is the amount of standard stuff the E46 came with, and the extremely good fit and finish compared to the mk5 GTI I have now. That isn't to say that the fit and finish of the GTI is bad by any means, the BMW was just better!

Nice. E30's are the best. That paint looks great in the pics. Very BMW.

If it is leaking a lot, I'd take it to a good mechanic for a look.

Just a little update guys, have been quite busy with work lately so haven't had much time to do anything with the car. Things that have been done,
-Retrofitted r134a air conditioning, including parallel flow condenser, zirgo high performance fan and all rubber hoses have been replaced by enzed,
- Found a hole less boot lid, and prepped it up for paint, i prefer this look :), Also finally received my coil overs from broadway static, cant wait to get these beauties installed, cant believe how small the springs are hehe.
-Ordered some fake leather from eBay and wrapped my upper headlining cover, actually turned out quite good.
- Repainted bonnet because i accidentally sanded through while wet sanding :(, but now looks better than ever.

Nice stuff!

Mines going to be getting a whole heap of love over the Christmas/new year period. Have spent quite a few thousand on bits and pieces to put in ;)

What sort of stuff have you bought for your e30? Yeh i know the parts for this car can get pricey especially if you buy genuine.

Yeah, just like any car really, pretty easy to go a bit crazy with a credit card and the internet... Over the break from work mines getting electric fan, standalone ecu and a major suspension overhaul (coilovers, sways, every single bushing/mount, rear camber and toe adjustment tabs, reinforcements for everything, brake hoses, basically everything haha, some oem, and upgrades for everything that can be) and some other little bits and pieces. Will write it all up in my build thread as it goes in ;)

ive had a few myself. started with a '84 323, got an all time favourite in the '94 318is, currently in an '02 325ci. fantastic cars, different to the vw. each has its merits.

My wife's car is a 2014 328i MSport.
It is nowhere near as comfortable as my Golf R or as much fun to drive. Also the headlights are borderline dangerous.
It is nice to look at though
.
No more BMWs for us that's for sure.

I'm also afraid to say that my love of cars is split between the Audi and BMW...

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/04/35888624223_b94e456501_h-1.jpg

I just need to get the H&R springs on to bring it down a bit and close that arch gap...
