I'm in the market for a new(er) vehicle.

At the moment I'm cruising round in a Mk1 GLD, however I'm looking at getting something a little quicker.

I have been looking at a couple of 91 Mk2 GTI 8V 1.8L models but have started looking at more and more things.

Considering there is a couple of Mk2 GTI's going for ~$4k at the moment and I have seen a few 05 Mk3 VR6's round the $7K mark, where should I be looking.

Do I go Mk2 and start looking at go faster bits?
Do I go Mk3 VR6 stock?

At this point I'm more looking at bang for my buck. Looking for something quick(er) than that I have now, not that it will be much of a stretch, still the quicker the better, keeping price as low as possible...

This continuing on from my 'Mk1 GLD or Mk2 GTi?' thread in the Mk1 section.

I was looking at either a Mk2 GTI or a Mk3 VR6...in the end it came down the the fact that the cheaper VR6's available were generally high kms and the couple I looked at werent maintained too well.

Ended up spending about 4k on the Mk2 which gave me a bit left over to invest in whatever comes along. I reckon you have to spend at least 8 or 9 to get a decent VR6 at the moment, unless you are lucky of course....feeling lucky? :)

vr6 will come along with its higher running costs. if budget is an issue a vr6 is a concern. They really are a labour of love. but a nicely setup one is a giggle a minute.
Mk2 would be a nice run about with more poke than the gld but an australian delivered one isnt gonna be a rocket unless youre willing to put the dollars in as well. would be easier to work than a mk3 vr6 as well if youre a bit of a home mechanic.

Ongoing maintenance or running costs? Just wondering what I would be getting myself into.

Both these are currently listed for VR6's:

Not sure if they are still available, but it shows whats around.

Yes the VR6's are high Km's @ around 18K or so a year, but not that much more than both the Mk2's.

That first Mk2 in Glenorie looks nice and clean, but it may be that the second onw just hasn't had a decent bath :P

Neglecting day to day running, what sort of on going maintenance are we talking about here?

Also starting to read in the Mk3 forums now too :)

I love mk2's but unless it's a valver it isn't gonna be that quick as all the cheap mk2's are aussie ones. Get the VR6 I know I want one ;)

There was a killer cheap Pommie Mk2. 1986 CL Immaculate at Merrylands Autos.

I went to see it, its a small bumper 1.8 Carby 5 Speed, really tidy and for $1500 with rego till next April.

I`d buy it, but I have enough VAG projects atm.

Sounds interesting... especially with that much rego.

The idea of a quick Mk2 vs a Mk3 VR6 still very much interests me, especially being cheaper and all :)

What to do, what to do.

Tax time means Tax returns... which means I may have that little bit extra, although it should be confirmed with the acountant on Monday exactly how much extra :D

I'm looking for something fun and quick.

Essentially all it NEEDS to do is get me to and from the station every morning and a run about on the weekend. Otherwise we have my Wifes Outback with the kids seat in it.

I'm also now looking at other 95ish Mk3 2L's which can also be found in that $6-$7 range.

Damn choices. I suppose there is nothing for it but to go out and have a look at the three options in the flesh.

I reckon a late MK2 GTI with a rechip, make it breathe better and you would be surprised ;)

At this point in time there is a choice between those two red MK2 GTi's or the 2 Mk3 VR6's.

The *Blue* VR6 looks nice, but then so does one of the red Mk2's.

While we are here... got any info on a "rechip"?

Assume for a moment we are talking about an Aussie MK2 8v

What's the *estimated* cost to replace the chip (or piggy back or however it works)?
What about a new high flow exhaust?
Cold Air Intake?

And after all that, whats it's *estimated* power output? (stock is about 90kW right?)

I know these are all very open ended questions, and I know there are *lots* of variables, but then I don't expect exact answers.

Just trying to weigh up an upgraded Mk2 vs a Mk3 VR6...

Anyone got both and want to let me taken them for a bash :D:cool::idea:

Rechip will do bugger all to a Mk2. Probably similar on a VR6 (no experience on VR6).

I disagree, I have had this done to my MK2 before my G60 engine swap. The difference was in the low to mid range torque=driveability.

The VR6 is superior in performance in standard form. Just look at the performance figures. The GTI would take some modding to get it up. Comes to personal taste and what you really want in the end.

If you fitted a chip with some other subtle mods like a full exhaust manifold back I would beleive you would get the lost HP in the RV GTI engine.
The chip I had was aa BBR

I agree a chip is worth it for a mk2 however if you had driven a valver or VR6 you would wonder what the fuss is about. Hawk go and drive a VR6 then the others ;)

I have thought about getting into vr6, quite alot

What my conclusion is that a mk2gti is better car for me, as I like the better handling & I reckon for sure that mk2 is a much better car in regards to build quality & DIY potential eg 16v or even 20vT conversion

I also think that the Australian mk2's get far to much bagging ( mostly from poms) in the performance area. I find on the hwy they move pretty well between 80-140kph, just what you need to overtake!!
But they are not to good down low
the most common mod is a better downpipe & cam, relatively cheap with notable improvement as well as the chips ect. ect

the mk2 will be cheaper & easier to service
not to mention it is often noted as the best carVW have ever made

4k will get a mk2
, but the reality is it will not be real good one

that's about my2c worth or I could just keep going

cheers Ian

There is a yellow sticker in the boot that says 77KW as well as alot of other info, so the above sounds about right
but it is all torque
you will make a mess of a 6 cylinder holden ect & they have about 2X the KW

Any this is a stock Mk2 we are talking about??

That would probably tide me over until I can get more go faster bits ;)

I want a bit of go, but it's not like it will be going round a track... well except maybe Wakefield next time my mates go out there :D

I reckon if you got an aussie Mk2 gti.

Changed the downpipe and manifold for the euro spec one, got a pommie ecu and a cam, it`d fly, be cheap on fuel and have maximum grin factor.

Hawk call me if interested, I have a mate with 2 Mk2s for Sale, one SA Import Kjet Mk2 110hp and the other on LPG.
He probably wants $4k for each car. but everything is negotiable ;).

Yes mate, standerd & in its most restricted form
& like Loon say's you will have the "grin factor" with limited mods

Mate, IMO go for the handling...

I had a 2L GL Mk3 that could pretty easily outcorner a VR6, but I just jumped into a Mk2 GTI 3 Door with a 2L Audi 110Hp engine, and it would corner rings around the Mk3, and is plenty quick to boot.

The VR6 is very quick, but thirsty, and corners like it has a heavy 6 under the bonnet ;). The Mk2 is (in my limited experience) not as quick, and getting older, but it's got serious style, it's a fuel miser, and handles well enough to put a mighty big smile on your face :D

Either way you won't be dissapointed. After all, they're both Vee Dubs!!!

Cheers!

Interesting to know.

I"m trying to get out to drive both a Mk2 GTi and a Mk3 VR6 but my parade is being rained on :P

I've even tried finding a dealer with a VR6 for sale just so I can have a fang, but the last dealer car sold yesterday :P

The Blue VR6 I want to look at is missing it's induction coil (or whatever it's actual name is) so isn't starting right now although it is being replaced this week. From talking to the guy it sounds pretty straight otherwise. Anyone happen to know if something like this is an indication of things to come or if it's just one of those things that wears out.

Also... define thirsty... what sort of consumption are we talking here?
