Hey guys.

After much umming and aahing, I decided to lash out and get a Mk2 GTI. My little sister needed a car to get to uni work placement, so I've given her my Mk3, and went searching for a new project...

Enter this UK Import 3 door 1985 GTI...

2L 8V 110Hp Audi K-Jet motor
No P/S
No A/C
Sunroof
Zender bodykit (Soon to go to a good home...)
All the, um, mod cons...

Be gentle... It is, afterall, a project car - a real work in progress...

Cheers!!!

Good to see the older GTIs are still going strong.

Need to correct you on the campaign bit though. They were made in late 87 into 88. They came with the newer digifant engine, had half tint rear lights, big windows and rainbow trim as well as only coming in metallic black, helios blue and oak green. They had different wheels to the std GTI, the Le Castellet.

Guys.. I lust for a mk2. Where do you find them???

I found this one on carsales by chance, and it must have been fate, because when I rang the guy with the car, he was literally driving past my house on the way to Murwillumbah from Brisbane. I was looking for a golf for my little sister, but this needed too much work for her... But I was up for a challenge...

What model are those headlights from John? Reminds me a bit of the Rallye model...

I think the lights are actually specific to that Zender bodykit. The car was imported from the UK in 1991 with the kit already fitted, so it's looking a little tired, but I have gotten some surprisingly positive comments from people today, while driving around, which gave me a bit of a giggle...

She's in at the auto-electrician tonight. The main wiring harness drooped onto the extractors and melted, there was no horn, and the rear left light cluster and driving lights weren't working... Needless to say, I'm not looking forward to the bill for that lot... :? Ah well, it is a project car...

I'll keep y'all updated, thanks for the comments...

I spent some time with John yesterday, mucking about on the beast.
We changed the rear calipers & now have no brakes, couldn't get rid of the air out of the system. I was in controll of the bleeding side of things as to the best of my memory, but just couldn't get rid of the air. Mechanics job now.
He has already started cleaning her up & its looking like something, should be nice when finished.

Might need to custom fab up a new grille! Those lights look unique - Jetta lights look taller and shorter than those. They reminded me of Rallye edition headlights, but after a check, the Rallye ones were one piece, whereas those look two-piece... even if they were Rallye-style headlights, it might be hard trying to find a Rallye grille!

They didn't come out until around 1990.

Golf Loon
16-07-2007, 09:02 AM
If its a personal import it needs high level brake light and child restraint points. It will have no compliance plate and could have come in to the country anytime as a personal import.

syncro
16-07-2007, 12:41 PM
If its a personal import it needs high level brake light .

So you're saying if it's an Australian one it doesn't need a high level brake light, but a private import does?

Golfer

Mine is compliance plated (1992) and has no high level brake light, but 3 child restraint points...

Just found out my master cylinder needs replacing  This after I just replaced the rear brake calipers ($450), and spent $350 in the auto electrician getting the wiring dramas sorted out...

So at the moment all I have is a pretty (and expensive) paperweight... :(

The child restraint point rules are more severe for imports too.

Yep true...
All imports reguardless of age need high mounts as far as im aware..
used to fit em for a place i worked for ages ago that did imports :(

Johns wouldnt have one if it came in in 92...rules weren't as tough then.
Mine doesnt run a hgh mount or child restraints...unsure what year it came into Oz though. All i know is it was a private import from the UK.

That wasn't personal imports.

86gti

That wasn't personal imports.

as far as i know from a chat with a w@nker when my MK2 was defected he said it had to have a high mount on it reguardless.... That was a personal import when it came into the country...
i wired one up, and took it off after it was cleared, lol....ugly things.
but, different states may have different rules. only ones i know most about are Jap imports (rice mobiles)...and if its imported from Japan (any car) it must meet some ADR rules depending on model... anything built after 1988 has to be FULLY complied tho...
eg side intrusion bars (in doors) New windscreen (adr approved)also applies to any import personal or otherwise) high mount brake light, Dimmer switch on instrument cluster, child restraint points, filler noz for unleaded vehicles (all are in japan but ADR states it must have the reduced size opening)...
blah blah blah...

but my only understanding of personal imports eg.... you goto that country and have it in your name then bring it over... is that it has to have rear brake light high mount, child restraints and ADR aproved windscreen....
only know tha because of a person i know who came over to VIC from the UK with an rs2000 escort (76 mod)

Golf Loon
17-07-2007, 08:04 AM
OK, what about SEAT ibiza and Toledo models which have child restraint mounting points in the boot floor as the are Aussie delivered.

BUT if you want to import a Golf 2, with points in the same place, you have to have a bar fitted between the towers with the restraint points on it.

I agree syncro that you are correct according to the letter of the law, but I have seen a lot of imports and they do not all conform to the same rules.

syncro
17-07-2007, 08:24 AM
The Australian delivered Golf 2 all had the bar between the shock mounts. I don't know of any other child mounts in a Golf 2.

My Golf 2 had a 6mm bolt on a tag just above the tail light as a child mount. I don't know where that engineer got his degree! (I saw the report.)

Golf Loon
17-07-2007, 09:04 AM
Yeah you are right Phill, the Aussie ones all have the bar between the towers.

However, the Uk ones had a bolt on the floor and no bar, the S.A ones had a blt on the floor or nothing and some of the imports have an aftermarket bar between the towers.

There is no conformity to the rules. that is my point. Particulartly with relation to the South African Cars.

We seem to have drifted a long way from the topic too!

Put a larger earth cable on and a few extras to the engine block while you are at it.

Ok, update guys!!!

* Still not registered...
* Brakes fixed. The VR6 rear callipers work a treat, but have shifted the brake bias more toward the rear, so I may have to look at doing a VR6 conversion to the front as well...
* Most electrical gremlins under control at the moment... I had a scare for a bit when half my systems dropped out (headlights, wipers, fan etc.) but it turned out being a problem with the immobiliser...
* New stereo fitted. It had no stezz in it when I got it, so I have put in a new Eclipse headunit, front JL splits, rear AutoSound speakers, 400W RMS amp and Pioneer 10" VCCS sub... Mostly it was parts I had lying around, and sounds very, very nice...
* I ripped the Zender grille off!!! I have replaced it with the red stripe, twin light GTI grille!!! Still need some bits and pieces for it to be complete, but looking promising!!!
* My small bumper bits and pieces arrived over the last couple of days, thanks to Ausgolfer. I'm going for a retro, original fit out. Painting up all bits, awaiting fitting. Hopefully not too far away from getting my paintjob, then the car will all go together...!!!
* In process of getting quotes for tint removal and replacement...
* When I got a wheel alignment, I discovered I have slight non-adjustable positive camber. The suggestion from the mechanic was to get the car lowered :D so I'm in the process of hunting down a set of lowered springs or coilovers.

Pics to come guys. It's still very much unattractive, but the new grille is an improvement. Every little bit counts!!!

Cheers!!!

Get camber adjusters from Volkswagen or from a Golf 3. (same part)
Use one as the the lower bolt first. If you need more adjustment replace the upper as well. Don't use the aftermarket garbage that is available (and more expensive)

Once it's finished I'll post before and after pics!!! I'm still in the process of sanding and removing the kit silicone, and taking pics as I go, so I'll put them up in one big clump!!!

Rego went through today. FINALLY has yellow plates!!! Yay!!!

Cheers!!!

I love that look, and my car would have looked like that originally, as it actually does not have the holes for the GTI kit! I'm gonna have to get them drilled by the panel beater.

I would go for the arch-free look, however I already have a full set of GTI arches and rubbing strips here, and I can't find anyone who sells the small rear stone guards anywhere, even though I have the holes for the small stone guard that is in your picture!!!

So I guess I'll be putting the flares on? :?

Alex, it's gonna be a looooooooooooooooooong drawn-out project, probly take me a good couple of years to get it how I want it, especially on my pay! ;)

Car should be straight, painted and looking gorgeous by next friday, however it will still be 10 feet tall riding on 14" Enkeis!!! I'll have to so something about that soon........

Future mods will involve Weitec TX fully-adjustable coilovers all around probly dropped about 60mm F&R, Mk3 GL front brakes (already have them fitted to the rear..), Strut bars and sway bars all around (I love a tight ride...:D), then to top it all off a nice set of 16x8" BBS with mildly stretched rubber and polished lips...

The bodyshop will be colour-coding the tailgate handle, deleting the rear wiper and washer, deleting the aerial, debadging the bodywork and smoothing all badge holes, smoothing the "stoneguard" paint below the lower sill-line, removing all windows and rebuilding any deteriorated sills, and finally hard-blocking the entire paintwork before putting two solid coats of clear over the top.

Like Big Kev, I'm excited...!!!

UPDATE......

We're hoping to see it in primer, all shaved and pretty by Friday arvo, as long as everything goes smoothly...

In addition to the shaving you see on the back panels, the holes in the front quarters where the "GTI" badges were (where you would find the side indicators on an Australian-spec car) will be welded up, and the antenna is no more, opting instead for a stealth windscreen antenna. The car is going to be hard-blocked with 2000grit to remove all orange-peel, and (for the moment) the GTI flares and rubbing strips are coming off, and all trim holes welded up, making way for a clean Euro-look. To top it all off, while the windows are off the car, the tint is coming off, and getting replaced with brand new 35%.

All the work is getting done in the panel shop, but Tony and Dom are pretty busy at the moment, so my car is taking a bit longer, but I don't mind, because the price is right :D

Gonna try to get down to Sydney next weekend to pick up some bits and pieces from Loon, and hopefully the mighty Mk2 will be mobile shortly afterwards...

Cheers!

Oh dear I hope so, as from today I have no car to drive, as my sister comes back from Sydney and is taking the mk3 back up to Brisvegas with her (I have enjoyed driving it again)... :(

However, I have another update: The new colour now extends into all the jams, window sills etc, the bonnet, hatch and all fixed windows are now back in place. I would go on a more street interior personally, this isn't a race car and shouldn't be made into one, it's a street car.

Engine idea sounds nice though.

I'm all for weight saving but I would also like to use my car daily and have it enjoyable to drive, with the right set up this can be achieved without sacrificing too many creature comforts like carpet and sound deadening.

PS I'd go OZ Chrono's in 17' IMHO but maybe I'm stuck in the 90's touring car theme

To be fair the car isn't very original. It's had body kits, different front ends, paint jobs and an Audi motor... If done properly I don't see how putting a quick motor in it will 'ruin' it. At the end of the day it's a (nice) modified toy, not a gull wing 300SL.

And yes Way, I may have seen another thread on the net about your car :). Doesn't mean I dont think you should do the above, haha.

What's that?

Haha, you boys from the aussie section of vortex moving over here with your humour and quick wit. Liven this place up a little. All good Way.

Hmm... Seems like if you can't have enough fun in THAT car without ruining it with racerboy mods, then you might need to learn how to drive...

Honestly... Bucketloads of torque, handling to die for, and a classic feel that is growing ever more rare as the years pass by... What more do you want? This ain't "The Fast and the Furious" LOL :)

Thinkin' of you all in Canada guys!!! We have toys like THIS ---> http://calgary.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-1992-Volkswagen-Golf-GTI-Coupe-2-door-W0QQAdIdZ182226212 over here!!!

Miss the fun of the Aussie dub scene :) Seems like driving a big ol' GMC pickup in Canada doesn't have the same sense of community as ours!

John :)
