Hi anyone planning to do aftermarket modifications? If so what are your potential mods?
After getting a rear sway bar, I'm planning to get coil overs/springs, does anyone know if it will affect the Adaptive chassis control?

I think KW make the only coilovers that are compatible with ACC. It will be disabled with other brands AFAIK
http://www.evlmotorsports.com.au/kw-automotive/kw-coilover-kits/kw-dynamic-damper-control/
After the 3k service I'll be lowering, new rims and possibly an aftermarket tune. Part from that I'll be getting some grey tint heh.
Those coil overs look nice so will check into the pricing of those.

Well... there is the other thread that has info on Reversing Camera and an expression of interest for Carbon Fibre mirror caps... plus another one about APR... perhaps they should all be rolled into one thread.

The coil overs are the ONLY way to get the sort of stance that 10d has on his black one.. but damn they are expensive for the ACC compatible ones. I will pass....

I'm getting a VWR air intake, votex CUP spoiler (fiberglass, already ordered) and paint the rims.... and a tune by maybe Veizu? to follow.

hmm K-mac make custom springs. If the coilovers are super expensive, I think ill go with some Eibach springs first off and do the changeover myself.

Did anyone read the Scirocco Wheels COTY write up? Sum it up... great car... suspension on the standard 19 inch wheel way to harsh.
Depends what you're after. I prefer harder suspension to the boaT like suspension most people are used to.

Also read the roads they used.. Personally when I tested the Roc it was on pretty ordinary roads.. certainly not super smooth freeways / motorways (do they exist in NSW) and the suspension was set to normal. I didn't change the setting but found the ride to be firm but perfectly acceptable for a 3 door Sport Coupe.
There was / is a similar argument that is ongoing with the Golf R about 19's vs 18's and ride etc...
Personally.... I would have ordered it with 19's anyway...

Not concerned about the ride - if I wanted to drive around in a lounge room I would have ordered a Lexus or something.
Two things that I would consider changing (and these will seem really silly) are:
covered drinks holder
covered 'cubby' hole in front of the DSG gear selector
I just think the interior looks a little unfinished with these holes in the console - especially the cup holders.
Apparently a golf lidded drink holder can be substituted in according to the guys on sciroccocentral.
+ tint of course
Later maybe APR stage 1 (or similar) and suspension upgrade but will live with the standard car for a while.

Interior-wise, I think they should get rid of the fake redundant button panel next to the ESP and damper adjustment buttons and replace it with something functional.

ST2 paddle extensions work just as they do with Mk6 R or GTI. There was an extended Group Buy on them but not sure if it is still going.

JDM rims ftw ! Do you know how the new springs will affect the ADC on the vehicle?
Springs wont affect your acc. Its the dampers (shocks) that are controlled.
Also the KW coilovers are about 3k delivered. Im going to hold off for awhile and just go with the springs for now.

You may of seen that I'm not a fan of the 'unfinished' interior in the R with open cupholders and the open area in front of the gear selector where the 12 volt connection is.
The parts to do this are available in the UK - the open area in the front of the console just needs to be built with a smokers pack option (not a smoker though)
I've asked the dealer this morning to see if I can get these two customisations done during the build rather than dismantling the console on arrival. I don't have a build date yet but as far as I can see the car won't be built until April (week 12 or so) as it is not due to land to June 14th (week 24).
I'm not expecting a yes but nothing ventured, nothing gained as they say.

While doing a search for lowered springs I can across Volkswagen Racing UK.
There is plenty of gear for the Scirocco from lowered springs to Big Brake kits....
Rennenhaus in NSW are listed as the distributor... not sure if they stock anything but might be worth contacting if you find anything on their site that takes your fancy...

Are you worried about the early wear of the dampers???
Are you worried about the early wear of the dampers???
Dampers are generally replaced every 100k km's. So even with the car lowered you wouldnt have to touch them (if they perished) for at least 3 years, which is going to be outside your warranty period anyway.
My H&R lowered springs should be arrive on monday. If I have enough time on the following weekend, ill pop them in and take some pics.
Andych

Are you worried about the early wear of the dampers???
Nope... only the visual aspects of the ride height... ACC only interacts with the valving on the dampers as well as steering load (Sports mode), not on the relative piston position so in general terms lowering 20 mm or 35 mm (H&R) should not have any effect on the damper life.
There will still be plenty of wheel travel so as long as you are not bottoming out all the time there will be no worries.
I believe they are made for Volkswagen Racing by Eibach too so all in all they are a good product... depending on price of course.
PS How much were the H&R's Bain?

」196.69 ($292.50) delivered to my door using UPS shipping. All was done through Paypal and the response times were fantastic! Ordered and shipped within a day.
According to UPS, my springs are currently in Koeln, Germany (originating out of the UK)
Thought id start out with a small purchase from the site before making a larger purchase down the track (KW DCC Coilovers) and possibly losing my money.

Should be relatively easy... as long as you have a decent set of spring clamps and take your time it should be fine.
Are your springs linear or progressive? There was plenty of blurb in the Mk6 forum about progressives being noisy due to spring bind etc... so it will be interesting to see how it all goes.
Just a small update. Pulled the front drivers side wheel off yesterday to get a feel of what needs to be done.
These cars dont have the standard setup of the more traditional coil and shock absorber that Im used to. The bottom end of the shock absorber sits in a cradle that needs to be pried apart to get the shock out.
Think im going to leave this to a professional. So, does anyone know a decent workshop I can take my car to in Melbourne? (would prefer a place that's done similar suspension - Golf R's and Audi TT's)

I'll be taking my car to Volkspower (http://volkspower.com.au//) when I'm ready for KW's.
I've had all my mods on the Audi, installed by them when I was down here last.
I would say the best mod for this beast is to upgrade the wheels and tyres. Go wide and you will see that you don't need AWD in most cases

Which one is more common? Typically it will be larger Euro performance cars (AMG, Audi, BMW) or HSV and FPR spec tyres I think.
I trawled 10d's build thread again and found his current wheel / tyre spec...
Final specs are now 19x9.5 et38 running 265/30/19 rears and 19x9.5 et13 running 265/30/19 with no scrubbing at all
Is that with any stretch? I'm looking to have the tyres flush or wider than the rim to protect it more.

How do the 255's look up close on the 9" rim? The 265 on the 9.5" almost look under tyred... not that a 30 or 35 profile is going to give you much in the way of rim protection anyway I guess...

Oh I agree that the 265 is not under tyred... just not much in the way of rim protection.. not that there will be too much of that on any 30 or 35 aspect tyre lol.
I remember my old Continental Sport 3's had a "rim" protection bead... not that it worked mind...
So how are Pilot Sport 2's for noise?
Go for the Super Sport for more rim protection. Seriously chunky sidewalls. In terms of noise both the PS2 and the SS is better than the OEM Dunlops. Out performs the Dunlops too in every aspect.
Seriously the best performance street tyres money can buy.

Yes the front suspension is a bugger for DIY. I swapped out the suspension in my mates Mk5 GTI last year - im assuming it would be very similar if not the same as the Scirocco as its based on the same chassis.
The rears are pretty basic and have the spring separate to the shock absorber. The fronts......what a mission. I had to make a custom tool to pry open the cradle that holds the bottom of the shock absorber (10mm allen key ground down using angle grinder and inserted into a socket to get leverage). I also helped my brother a few years ago change the springs on a Ford Fiesta and it had essentially the same setup on the front as the Golf - must be a Euro thing. All my other cars have been Japanese and just had 2x bolts holding the shock absorber in place at the bottom.
Bottom line - if your a handy DIY'er and have a friend to help, good jacks and axle stands etc, you can do it as a DIY. Otherwise, hand over some $$ and get a suspension place to do it for you.
This is the tool thing-a-ma-jig that you need to spread the cradel on the front suspension: http://www.autotech.com/product/tools-bushings/10-012-411.html?fromcat=

Today my R was re-mapped with the Revo Stage 1 and tuned up by George at VW Village in Kensington, NSW
No Dyno yet but from what I have read, it should give me around 300BHP.
From my limited driving this arvo, I can tell the car is sensational. Aggressive constant power up through the revs. A long (and seemingly endless) power curve in 3rd gear. 4th gear is huge! I forget if I even used 5th and 6th! hehehe
Very happy!
Nice! Be sure to post some dyno results/print outs
Mac135
25-02-2012, 08:38 PM
So 300bhp is going to run to around 225kw. Provided its usable and, it sounds like it is from your initial drive, then its going to be pretty potent. Are you adding other mods to accompany the Revo?

Probably the only thing I will do is tweak the handling.. Anti Roll bars to assist cornering and (maybe) down the track, I'll take a look at suspension mods.. I don't really want to try and get more HP with exhaust mods.. In fact.. If I'm getting 300HP, then that suits me just fine..

I would generally agree with you. 300 is about the same as i have in the 135i. Don't need anymore for driving around town ie the car won't be tracked.
As long as there is a strong pick up and mid range then i'd be v happy. Did you look at other than Revo eg APR?
As you can see my car is still some time away so it is good to learn from the guys with cars on the road. At this stage i think my mods would be limited to
Stage 1 remap
Suspension upgrade k & w DCC kit perhaps
Also fitting storage unit and covered cup holders for fitting by the dealer prior to delivery

You'll void the warranty on the entire drive train.
Hence why I'm going for Viezu. At least with V switch I can revert to stock program before each service or warranty claim if need arises.

It will only void the warranty if a failure can be attributed to the tune... The same as if you fit a CAI or Dump Pipe.... but don't rely on what any of we weekend warriors say in here... talk to your preferred tuner.. Guy Harding for APR for instance as these guys will be able to give you the more definitive answer.

Andy,
you are on the money.. this conversation has been had over and over.. a Stage 1 ( if thats how you want to refer to it ) is a remapping exercise and bang for buck the best spend on your Turbo vehicle and the safest. Warranty is a tricky area to navigate, but I was with the crew out at the drags yesterday and there is a fellow there who has had a HADEX failure on the rear wheels( which prevented him entering, however he has what some might call a stage 3 and when he went back to VW they asked him what mods he had, he told them and they said fine and the HALDEX is being fixed under warranty.
The tuners themselves are going to skirt around answering directly as it is not a cut and dried answer and even those offering some warranty/insurance of their own create an interesting situation as to who actually will agree which caused the issue if it comes to that.
There are some big names out there and I recommend you do a bit of research on tuning first, my tips are make sure whoever you decide can offer after sales service, preferably local and actually understands technically what is going on with the tune. For me the most important aspect was getting a Dyno readout of the promised figures, I know I got what I paid for :)

There was also plenty of discussion in the Ford XR5 forums as well on the same issue.. a couple fo guys had what can only be considered catastrophic failures yet the engines were replaced under warranty... and they had swapped back to "standard" mapping using a handheld device but Ford still knew there had been a tune installed... the manufacturer can go pretty deep into the firmware when they need to.
It is also important to have a Tuner who is willing and able to sort issues out and get your tune back when VW load a new version with some minor bug fixes etc... it does happen and there have been plnety of people who are left without their $1000 plus tune because it was done in Qld and they are in NSW etc...
Do your homework well people..

I am having my engineer who does all my Porsche upgrade work come up with a prototype. It will be strong and malleable, easy to mount and able to be easily replaced as it wears down over the years so it will never hit the actual lip area again. We know what material we are going to use and I'm heading over there on Friday so we can take some dimensions and get started. If the prototype works out we will make them available to the community.

Are you looking at them for the Bracing or the sway bars?
I don't see the need for bracing under normal road conditions...plus it will induce more NVH.
If for sway bars I would stick to the better known solutions such as Whiteline... Just my 2 cents worth though... 😊

Diameter or width?
I would not go to 20 inch diameter as the ride would degrade too much running on liquorice strips...
That leaves width... and we know that 9.5 inch with 265's needs a 35 ET and some negative camber on the rear...
Personally I think they are tyred about right... maybe go to an ET of 38 if you are changing wheels so they are out a touch further.

Looks like a gloss gunmetal grey to me? Mainly because I noticed it in her signature :)
Andy, thanks for the info. I'm more interested in the width (that's what she said). With the "limitations" of FWD, fatter tyres would help keep the car in traction. I didn't want to go 265, but thought some 255s would go well.

With the "limitations" of FWD, fatter tyres would help keep the car in traction. I didn't want to go 265, but thought some 255s would go well.
Well it all depends on what you are going to do to the car and how heavy your right foot is... :)
I have the Viezu tune and to be honest... if I just bury my right foot I can have wheelspin / traction control light easy in the first 3 gears before getting into illegal territory.. or I can modulate my right foot and get just get pushed back into the seat with all the torque.
Wider doesn't always mean better grip... it is dependant on the tyre too... the softer the compound the grippier it is and the faster it wears... not to mention the potential for aquaplaning in wet conditions with wider tyres...
At the end of the day... tyre width is limited by wheel width. I doubt you would get anyone to fit 255's onto the 8 inch rim. I think they would need 9 or 9.5 inch rims.
You would then want to look at the ET to ensure all was OK... and again.. I would go for either 38 or 35 depending on the rim width.
It isn't as simple as it seems....
Thanks again. If I were to get wider tyres I'd obviously be looking at replacing the rims as well to a 9 or 9.5. I'll also be swapping out the tyres almost right away to Michelin PSSs.
Out of curiousity, what tyres are you guys getting from the dealer? Are most getting Potenzas?

I have to say she_dub I do really like that wheel colour you went for, hawt and nice with the blue. I am guessing it also does a good job of hiding the brake dust? Must be the design of the wheel or something but they seem to get a lot dirtier a lot faster than any previous cars I have owned.
I have to say I also like the "land of the giants matte black" Andych is looking at too.
Anyone got any suggestions for what colour/finish combo of something like gloss/matte in black/anthracite or something like that for mine?

Haha... I am only looking at the stance after it is lowered... not the wheels or the colour... well I like the wheels.. but not matte black.
I believe the same colour as she_dub has would look spectacular on Viper Green...not too dark... but certainly dark enough...

It's not the talladegas, it's the oem brake pads. From experience, the better the brake pad performs, the more brake dust and the standard package definitely stops very well coming from an ex Brembo and AP Racing user

The brake dust is not as noticeable on the gunmetal. Having said that, I've only had the wheels this colour for a couple of days, though I have noticed it's less glossy lol

After having gone down the gunmetal / anthracite path, I am biased towards the anthracite, as there still definition between the wheel and the tire. You also have the benefit (or curse) of being able to chose shades of grey.. warm or cold etc.. with black.. it's just black.

Thanks she_dub that is a good point about the definition between the wheel and tyre. I quite like the Talladegas too and they would still be visible with the anthracite. Coincidentally I saw a Golf R in RB today with full black wheels and they were just too dark.

It is a 10" slimline dual voice coil sub with a 150 watt amp built in... not massive but it will be enough to fill out the low end which is what I want.

Freak folks out - but they are painful. The kit I used you could open the door normally about 12 inches to get out in a hurry or then up they would go but you had to be careful closing them and passengers could never get it right and rego knocked it back so in the end I removed them for Hyundai after they bought it back off me. Novelty for about the first 3 months and the you wonder WHY you did it.

There is an even more pronounced "rake" front to rear now isnt there.. it looks really good, certainly not as low as Bains but given your front splitter that could be a good thing.
Mine are being done on Tuesday so when I get back from Brisbane sometime Wednesday and pick her up I will post up some pics for comparison.
I like that colour Rebecca. The only thing I think it needs is a little more gloss, at least on the CW. That matte type look goes well on the RB.
If I were going that colour I'd get a few layers of clearcoat on it to shine it up!

Heya
love the lowered look..it is the perfect height.
Dont want to play offsuit but that offset, particularly on the rear doesnt look right.
....what is it 39 + or something like that.
The 3rd pic really shows the tyre outside of the guard line.
Please what is that offset.

Yeah I went oval! They're black gloss. I saw the round ones in the flesh and they don't fit right in the space as its also oval.

I had the same question, then I decided I really want the Akrapovič system instead..
Glad you got the black oval tips! Best option :)
I also almost went with the Aprakovic too Rebecca. Pricey though. And too loud for me.
I went resonated on the cat-back. About 30% more grunt. Perfect for me.

Yeah just changed the back. Still going Milltek DP. No clue how it's going to mate to the rest. I don't think the Akra has a link pipe from the end of the DP to the exhaust. Will let CPC sort that!,

I don't think anyone else should get the Akra. It's not that good actually. You won't like it trust me.
Naw, they go about $2600-$3000 for the part. That's just the slip on exhaust. It's not a full TBE. Then install on top.

The Giac stage 1 is exactly how I expected it to turn out, more power throughout the rev range (esp the mid range), linear delivery & does not run out of puff up top compared to standard. Did not disappoint.

A couple of iPhone shots of AFTER the Eibach springs are fitted from when I got my car home yesterday afternoon.
I will try to get some better ones with a proper camera over the weekend... The end result is 15mm drop in the front and 10mm at the rear.
Depending on the angle it can look more... or look standard and it has more to do with the offset on the wheels than with actual height.
Aftermarket wheels with a smaller offset has the tyre filling the guard more and as such it all looks lower.
http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z346/andrewchoake/Scirocco%20R/Suspension/IMG_0164.jpg
http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z346/andrewchoake/Scirocco%20R/Suspension/IMG_0161.jpg
I have to say that the major difference is in the ride quality and handling....
On the OEM springs I was running most of the time on comfort as Sport was too harsh on bumps etc... and Normal was not subtle enough....
Now in Sport there is much more initial compliance when there is a bump or dip in the road... the Eibachs seem to be allowing the shocks to do their job better... and very little body roll... so far I am more than happy.

If you are going for new rims/tyres, you could fill out the guards by going a 35 profile tyre (closing the gap a bit). It will change the speedo by about 2km's at 100k/h.
Correctly so...I stand corrected

That is the cheapest way for them to do them... so not "true CF" as in light weight and strong but that is not important...

Well y'all. Got the Roc back today from Sam at CPC. Firstly let me say how awesome they are at that shop. Apparently Tendy and AP have timeshare in there ;)
Was one small change to the parts. The Akra isn't the black carbon tips. It's not even the titanium tips. Which confuses the heck out of me as according to their website it only comes in those finishes. Instead it's like a light gold/brown type of finish. I got a deal on it so it's no issue to me. I think it goes well actually. Contrast to the rest of the car. And based on the way it sounds, who really gives a complete **** :)
Vids to start. Will get better ones this weekend with my friends HD cam. Will do some drive-bys. Pardon the iPhone footage. The sound in the clips do not do it justice in any way, shape, or form. The sound in real life I cannot describe. Orgasmic? Makes me feel dirty? Yeah that's kinda it!
Next is to dyno it. Might do it this week.

I have an email telling me my CF full mirror covers are waiting for me when I get back into the Country on Monday...I hope..
Once I get my hands on them I will throw a couple of pics up before fitting them at some stage...soon.
Couple of night runs I took with a mate. Man there's ALOT of wheel spin haha. He's american...don't blame him for it though ;). And I realize I also sound...funny eh.

It's coupled with a Milltek DP as well, so that's helping the sound. It's getting raspier and deeper each time I drive it...getting a nice little carbon build up :)

Good question haha. I think they should look close to that way.
Looks like they are on major back order though. Will be a while before I get them. No rush though.

The ones you have found bring the R into the current VW look. I think the tail, tail lights in particular, give away the Roc's true design age. Still loving it though!

So, i picked up my CF Mirror caps from the post office today and the quality is what you would expect for the $$.
The overall finish is good... a touch rough around the edges but nothing that you would notice once they are on.

Fitting is fairly straight forward on these... you pull the old ones off.. carefully.. and then push the new one on...

They are understated if anything as they are more of a grey tone than the original black...
I will see how they hold up to normal use.. I still have the originals if I want to go back... so all is good.

Agree with Ian (Mac), Andy they look nice, but now you need to do the wheels to match :D
They look pretty good Andy.
Are you going to get the rest of your gloss black areas cf'd so that they don't look out of place?

Not too bad for $120 odd delivered..
As for more CF... no, I will leave it at just the mirrors... Personally I don't think they look out of place at all...they actually tie in quite nicely with the mesh on the side of the headlights...
Now to just find the right colour to do the Tallies... I kind of think it is going to have to be shadow chrome... but it is so expensive..

Fair enough!
What about replacing the tallies with a shadow chrome rim in a different style? That way you have 2 rims to swap between if you wish to.

Hmm I have been down that track but so far I havent found anything I really want that is in the range I am willing to pay...
I am contemplating going naked on the Tallies though....highly polished with clear coat... Certainly different...

Nothing wrong with different. If we were all the same, all of the CW/Gray/Black cars would have black mesh like rims - which looks great! but isnt very 'individual'.

It is still going to be a rare sight - VW won't sell that many in a year. If i read the VFACTS data correctly only 15,000 or so coupes were are sold last year, though might be more this year with the toyota 86/BRZ. If VW sell 1,000 R's they will be doing well.
Dare i say more exclusive still in indium:smile:
