So the season is about to kickoff with the first rounds of the Vic Hillclimb Championship (http://hillclimbvic.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/VHCCRegsJan282012.pdf) and the Victorian SuperSprint Championship (http://www.piarc.com.au/files/23517S.pdf)
Anyone coming out to play?

Here is a listing (http://victorianspeedevents.org/calendar.html) of the Victorian Speed Events Calendar

I'll be there Greg,

I'll aim to get to all rounds of the VSSC again. (I've got a title to uphold:P )

Probably take in a few G5 sprints at Sandown and Phillip Island as well as a Hill Climb at Haunted Hills.

I'm entered for PI on the 12th of Feb.

Just rotated the tyres and bought a new extinguisher for the season.

See you out there.

Paul & I will both at The Island on the 12th as well.
Will you do the Hill Climb at Haunted Hills on the 28th of this month, Peter? I'm thinking of entering (though I don't have a log book so I might not be accepted)

Peter Jones
20-01-2012, 02:23 PM
Nah, I won't do any of the Hillclimb Championship events.

There should be one or two hillclimbs as part of the Group 5 events. If there's one at Haunted Hills I'll go to that. No need for log books etc.

Is there any form of motorsport that doesn't require a cage and harness? I.e. normal road car?

Other than track days of course. Maybe something like a carpark autocross that they do in the states? Or does that not happen here in VIC?

From the video, bit hard to see, I thought the car had rolled, but guessing it didnt, any damage?

Holy **** man. My heart nearly stopped when I saw the blurred slow motion part of the video cause it looked like Greg spun out and flipped. Hope he didn't and no major damage was sustained. Would've been effin scary though.

From the pics, it looks like Greg's car has been turned into a jacked up 4wd in one and the other 2 it looked like his rear end was jacked up high? Is it just my eyes playing tricks on me or is Greg experimenting with rake?

Greg's car is fine, he rejoined the same session after a quick inspection.

The car seems to nose dive a bit under brakes bringing the back up in those photos.

Usual fixes include lowering, stiffer front springs and shocks.

The award for over achievement in the field of commitment goes to Greg for his interpretation of turn 1.

Which goes to show that my Polo doesn't need a rear anti-roll bar ;)
I may get one if I also get a stiffer front bar to match but other things need to be sorted and tested first.

Actually, it was LACK of commitment that caused the spin - after turning into turn 1 without braking, I didn't have the nerve to keep some accelerator on to keep the car neutral so the weight transfer caused lift off oversteer. I may have still had the tyres the wrong way around in that session too .

I was pretty happy to finish that session off with a 2:12 after coming in for a quick walk around to make sure everything was still where it was supposed to be.

I was mainly worried about getting into someone's path as I tried correcting the spin and fought the corrections before I ran out of track (too gutless to get back on the accelerator to drive it out). Basically, I was too busy to be scared.

As Peter said, most of the pics have my car under brakes so it looks higher than it is but you guys are right, I think the Polo Cross configuration may have the rear in the wrong part of the camber curve, especially in droop. Previously, I thought the instability was purely due to the front bushes flexing but the spin occured without braking so there is a geometry problem.
I'll get the rear perches taken out as part of the next round of mods to my car.

Many thanks to Peter for his advice and Jody for the pics and huge thanks to pauld + my old school mate, Pete, for coming down with me and helping with all the fiddling about (wheel changing etc). Very happy with dropping 2 seconds from my previous Island outing:banana: but it showed in my fuel consumption with the highest session usage being 13.5 l/100km vs 12.0 l/100km (MFD reading from exiting pit lane to the chequered flag).

Hopefully, I'll have some onboard footage to add to this thread soon (didn't get the sping, unfortunately).

And here's a few pics of white cross posted from my Wreck to Race thread.

My car was playing up a bit with fueling issues about 2 laps into each round. I suspect float levels and needle/seat issues again.

Still got some good laps in, just retired early in each round.

White's sporting a new look, I've ditched the bumper to gain some airflow through the extra openings behind the bumper.

I also gave the nose a clean up, with a quick strip back and respray after hitting some debris out at Phillip Island and tearing the spoiler mounts out.

Unusually they were allowing passenger sessions today, here's Greg and I comparing the differences between petrol and diesel technique.

It was great fun and very instructive to have Peter take me out in White - been ages since I been hammering out around a race track in a carby petrol engined car. I'll be trying to remember his lines and braking points when we return in July.

Sadly, White's misfire prevented Peter from setting a proper time for the day and the PoD ended slightly faster for once (and probably the last time it'll happen too). http://www.natsoft.com.au/cgi-bin/results.cgi?15/04/2012.SAN

A great day and the Sandown circuit was much more enjoyable than I had feared from looking at the track layout - the rise and fall across the back give it some real character. The friendly kerbs were a big plus and I managed to use most of them at some point in the day :cookie:. It just too bad there weren't more VWs out there.

The PoD would probably still have looked dirty even if I washed it beforehand due to some offroading I did at turn 1 during the practice session  I still don't think the colour of the wheels matches the car very well (they'd be the business on a red car) but that was low on the priority list when I bought them. Steering seems a little more dead than with the OEM wheels which may be the reduced offset but I'm not complaining

And finally, thanks to Jodie for yet again documenting another day at play.

I wanted to do Winton but exams are holding me back this time :(

Peter: What's Sandown like to drive in a relatively under powered car? Im tempted to give it a go over there but the two main straights give me the feeling that im not gonna have as much fun, compared to say... Winton or a hillclimb circuit?

I'm not Peter but I'll answer anyway

I had the same impression from looking at the circuit map - 2 longs straights (with me in a diesel) and a lot of 90 degree bends had me thinking it would be dull.
I actually found it a lot of fun as the back straight goes up a fair hill so the twisty section returning to the main straight has quite a lot of fall which makes the 90 degree corners a lot more fun than the flat ones at Winton's new long circuit (the old short circuit there is far more fun). The other thing that helps Sandown is that the kerbs are VERY friendly so you can use them at entry, apex and exit to extend the corners and even climbing completely on top of them isn't a concern.

Now the bureau is saying showers on Sunday morning - hopefully I'll get at least one dry session before I have to leave.

White (Peter Jones' current track MkI Golf) continued to give trouble at Sandown today as Peter tried changing several fuel and ignition components with only minor improvements :(

The PoD ran quite well today with the Motorsport map almost certainly minimising the amount of time that I lost to only half a second in today's damp conditions vs the time I set last round in perfect conditions.

Yeah not a great day out for me today.

Each time I went out the car cut out one lap in . I got towed in twice.

I'm leaning towards ignition failure now rather than fueling. The data logs show odd features in the RPM graphs that shouldn't be there. They're consistent with an intermittent signal from the crank angle sensor.

I've ordered new coil, crank angle sensor and crank angle sensor as well as the in tank fuel filer which we discovered was very blocked today.

Only time will tell if I've fixed it. Might have to book some time on the dyno to make sure it's fixed.

Almost every time you go out another tyre dies!

Time for a different brand maybe?

Nah, it's my fault for pushing too hard on old (6 years) stock tyres. The guy at Traction Tyres looked at the latest killed A048 and said the belt was separating from the tyre due to heat + age (which is probably what killed the 1st one while the 2nd was killed by a heavy kerb strike) and they did warn me about this when I originally bought them (I told them I wouldn't be able to push them that hard with my car )

Time to throw out the Advans and get some Toyo R888's or Bridgestone RE55.

I did think about this but there is a sale on for excess NEW stock A048's so I'm getting a fresh set in 205/50R15 :cookie:

For anyone interested, here are the sale details for the A048's - http://www.tractiontyres.com.au/pdfs/a048_clearance_a4flyer_v2.pdf

Also, Trackside Tyres (http://www.tracksidetyres.com.au/contact.html) are clearing out current stock RE55's at good prices to make way for the RE11 replacements.

Or Andrew and Shane for the A048's - they're even cheaper.

Old semi-slicks of any brand won't hold together under heavy (ab)use.

So is anyone else thinking of entering the final round of the VSSC (https://secure1.ilisys.com.au/wrxc/motorsports_two/WRX%201%20September%202012%20Entry.pdf) at Winton on the 1st of September?

I'm still tossing up whether I should as my series class position is safe and I can't improve on it barring either (or both) of the class leaders not turning up  It would be nice to use my new semi-slicks but then I'd have to find time to break them in (and re-bed my brakes :P)

Peter Jones

Not me. I'm placed too low due to mechanical issues at the last two events to bother.

I also need the time and money to spend on the new car.

Might take White out for a final spin at the Sandown cup day sprint in November.

The Kamei car will be finished this year but I'm not sure if I'll get it out on the track.

Phillip Island is resurfacing over Christmas I think so that'll put a dent in the calendar.

I'm now leaning towards the Sandown track day on this day by the Ford Four Car Club (http://www.ffcc.com.au/)

Do you have a CAMS licence (L2S or higher) yet?
You need one for all circuits except Winton for the TMS days (and Calder :P) who can issue their own licences.

Also need a fire extinguisher (again not needed for Winton TMS)

I ran an equal best time of 1:38 which I'm happy with for what was a pretty cruisy event and just an opportunity to give White a final outing before retiring from racing.

Weather was a bit variable and I only got 2 really dry runs but even the wet runs were fun.

It was great that White responded to the TLC to his fuel system by equalling its PB :) . Well done Peter with both the maintenance and the slick driving

I managed to run the PoD out of front brake pads (driving around with less than 1mm on the drivers side today ) before the end of the day and my lousy traffic management, session interruptions and the variable weather kept me slower than my first visit to Sandown.

The latest set of mods felt really good but my best time for the day was set in the first session where I spent most of it scrubbing in tyres and bedding in brakes. I thought I was on a really good lap in my last session but the session was red flagged as I got off the back straight and then I came in and saw what was left of my brakes pads.....

I had an absolute ball chasing a 300 whp, WRX STi in a wet/dry session - it was a shame that they put White and the PoD in different groups

Big thanks to Peter and Jody for their continuing help and encouragement :)
