White Golf wouldn't start this morning. I'd parked on a slight incline and the plenum filled up over night and slowly drained back inside the car.

Of course a key component of the Mk I drainage system is the Fuse box.

When I hooked up the Battery Charger the fuel pump started running! I started pulling relays and sure enough they were full of water.

The Fuel pump must have started running sometime during the night and ran 'till the battery went flat. Hopefully the battery isn't stuffed.

Now to work out how to stop it from happening again. Normally I park both golfs in the Garage but the SEAT wreck is in one bay for another couple of weeks yet.

I might just tape over the bonnet vents with some sign writing vinyl in the short term. Maybe one of those MK I bonnet scoops later on. Probably should clean out the raintray and reseal it all at some stage.

Good thing relays are cheap at Jaycar!

What sort of fuel pump relay do you have?

Are you sure it's not the windscreen leaking?

The wrong sort! It's a temporary measure. I'm aware of the risks. Aiming to fix asap. The correct relay may not have failed the same way.

Are you sure it's not the windscreen leaking?

Yep. The water is seeping through a join in the panel. Windscreen has been gooed to death by previous owner.

All dry now. Compressed air, contact cleaner, WD-40 and two new relays to the rescue!

I drilled a hole in the blinker relay on my '76 to let the water out.:)
