I know Eddy has them on his car - but he has spacers on.
I wondered if anyone of you guys had the same setup without the spacers, I am keen to get more comfortable ride from the car, and really hoping that 50 profiles tyres would fit without other modifications.
I have H&R setup with Whiteline front sway bar.
Never had problems with 45 profile or with 205/40/17 wheels (38mm offset).
The height should not be an issue - but it the increase diameter by about 10mm on full lock may hit other structures on the front.
What do you think?

To answer my own question:
After driving about 10km, in and out of drive ways and speed bumps, it seems that our Pogos can take profile 50 tyres on 16 inch.
My back ones are still 45 (wanted to try 50s on front first), but I don't see how back ones will cause any problem.
The ride is definitely more comfortable. Seems to absorb those little imperfections on the road away nicely. Will keep you informed after all 4 wheels are done tomorrow.
Hoyhoy.
I recommend going to 205/50/16's, me Little Blue Girl is set up stiff & it made her more comfortable, plus filling the guards better.

So far very happy with 205/50/16 setup. If you are concerned about comfort - especially with lowering, and like the shape of Monza's. Try them out at next change. I changed as I didn't like the rears (RE001) much, and really wanted some extra comfort.
Pot holes - easily absorbed.
Next upgrade when stock shocks fail, with combination of blisteins will be awesome.
Now the speedo reads more close to what it is supposed to be going at. I haven't had time to measure it with GPS yet.

Hoyhoy.
Those figures show more reason to go to 205/50/16's, taking into consideration that the Polo speedo reads over by 9% to start with.

As far as I am aware after owning 4wd SPACERS ARE ILLEGAL EVERYWHERE
Could give you serious insurance issues as well as front wheel bearing problems etc.

No spacers required. for 50 profile.

Excellent info, thanks - I'll be going to 50 profile tyres in a week or two, then.
Edit: What tyres did you go for? I think I might get some Kumho KU-31s if I can.

I got yokohama adman a07 for fronts, and toyo T1r for the rears. I would have loved to get yoko's at the rear too, but couldn't get it as it was superseded by a08. I got 3x a07 for 50 dollars each and has 6-7mm thread left on it.
One warning - spares will not take 50 - due to size of the well, but profile 45 temporary to next stop as long as you are not doing stupid speeds - will be fine.
I would highly recommend it.

Cheers mate. Putting on KU31s tomorrow in 205-50-16, and leaving a spare with the almost-bald 45 it's already got. Cheers.
Hoyhoy.
I went for the Federals 595RS-R (205/50/16), me like.

Loving the new tyres - a hell of a lot more comfortable. 205/50/R16 KU-31s fit with no rubbing whatsoever on stock everything.

I thought it was a crazy idea, when the thought of 205/50/16's first hit me.
But may be not so, hey.

Makes sense to me - track suspension isn't supposed to cope with crappy ordinary road surfaces.
That's why I went from 195/55R15 to 175/65R14 for daily driving and would have gone to 175/70R14 if the Michelin XM2 was available in the taller profile.

Thread revival...
I splashed out on some new Michi Pilot Sport 3s over the weekend. Thanks to wet weather boredom and a sale at Tempe Tyres I made a rush move on some 205/50/16s. I'd have to say immediately fairly impressed with the improved ride and crap road compliance. The car looks a bit more grown up now, like it's wearing it's big-boy shoes. Far less boy racer and much more MK5 Golf. Image below. Unfortunately, the better ride has only highlighted how much I dislike my current spring/shock combo with it's saggy waggy ways. Tyres are much wider at the side walls and actually sit proud of the rims by a goooood 15mm or so. A bit of a surprise over all really.13979

Guys, is it going to be blatantly obvious to the casual observer that it's running 50 profile on the back and 45s on the front? I need a pair of new tyres and like the sound of the 50 profile, but the second pair would probably have to wait for 3 months... What do you think? I'm assuming the larger ones would be better in the back? Cheers.

Also keen to know if anyone thinks the resultant change in gearing has taken the edge off the acceleration?

Highly doubtful!

I'd say go for it, but my preference would be to them on the front, that's where you'll notice a bigger difference.
Highly doubtful!
Hoyhoy.
I'll go along with that..

My thoughts on rubber is the more the better, especially for faster acceleration off the mark (mind you running 15 psi on the street probably won't help tyre wear) ;)

Should look fine with the 50s on the rear.

You know I didn't think it'd make any difference, but it did a little bit. But not the way you'd immediately think.
Highly doubtful!
I think it's actually added some straight line grip and speed.

Rears done. Does look a bit more grown up. Looking forward to doing the front to balance it up, but doesn't look too obvious and I doubt anyone else will notice.

I'll stick with my opinion, put them on the front, then you'll know what ya got.

I know where you're coming from, but my thinking is it'll look a bit naff, and as it stands at the moment, the old pair will get chewed out quicker and I'll be forced to buy another couple of 50s ;-)

Ya got the whole weekend to play, swap em over, go for a good run, then swap em back, but I think that you may not do that.
