I'm torn... Maybe I'm asking this is the wrong (or right) part of the forum
Do I spend money on the 79 Mk1 GLD I currently have, or do I go out and get a newer 91 Mk2 GTi and sell the Mk 1 :???:
Like this one:

The Mk2 still has the body shape I like, the twin lights I want, and lets not forget it will go faster than the GLD I have right now)

Having said all that the GLD is virtually rust free and is very clean and tidy on the inside. It would make a good start for a nice project car. The downside of course being that I need a daily driver so can't afford to take it off the road.
Maybe asking in the Mk1 part of the forums will sway the answer, but then I'm sure putting this in the Mk2 part would have the same effect...

Your Diesel is very straight and they are hard to find in that condition.
It will never be worth more by modifying it, so if it is speed that you crave you should get a faster car.
That Mk2 looks good and is pretty cheap. Oli brought it on our last cruise down to Wollongong and it goes pretty good too.
If you want to make a petrol Mk2 faster, there are plenty of options.

Except for the front passenger panel it's straight. (that panel has been straightened out but needs to be painted up at some stage).
Just starting to get a little smokey, hence the debate on spending money on it or just flat out replacing it.

yer hard decision but if you have a spare shed keep hold of the diesel you could do a period/retro rebuild, having said that mk2 gti's are damm fun cars and they have just that extra level of soficication and extras that makes them a pleasure to daily drive
i had a gld and ran that thing absouloutely into the ground , you cannot kill them. ran if for 1 1/2 years without any water in the radiator ( me and my brothers first car) it was amazing, finally the rust got hold of it.

Keep the GLD. It looks sweet.
Or at the very least, sell it to someone on the forum!

mk1 looks to be in good nic, but get the mk2. its over a decade newer and would make a better daily driver.

I suppose the last question is what is the GLD actually worth if I were to sell it?
Would it be unreasonable to want $2,000?

It's very hard to estimate the worth by looking at digitals. The car is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. My red GLD was advertised on this forum for months before anybody took any notice of it. I sold it for $2000 which is what I paid for it.

Very true.
$2,000 will get me most of the way to what I have spent so far and will allow me to get into a new Mk2 without hitting the wallet too hard. Mortgage + family + toys don't tend to mix as well as I would like, but then, at least the boy is cute so he gets away with it :)

He is a Daddy's boy, and he loves his cars, mums being a relatively boring Subaru Outback, Dad's of course being something much nicer.
I will have to work out exactly what funds I can scrape together, then put the GLD up for sale in the for sale section. Then it's time to have a more concerted hunt for a new vehicle.
The real shame is you can't buy the Citi :)

Oh I never said they worked... :P
The Park Brake light has never worked, don't even know if it has the electronic to work.
The Brake light however does work, when I first got the car it was on, which the original owner said it has always been on and he could never get it to go off.
Strangely enough a little work on the brakes and the light is now off... Did I happen to clean up a sensor? Did new brake fluid fix the problem? The light has been off for 8 months now, so whatever did it, it now works :)

My prefrence would be the GTI - it's newer, sportier and more of a fun car to drive - although it would lack the character of the mk1.
But having just said that - since you have the Mk1 - I'd spend the dough on the mk1 and bring her back to her former glory.

I would keep the Mk1 GLD. I love the first generation Golfs.
Looks way too nice to get rid of.
