Hey Guys,

I'm new to the VW scene, having come from a Honda.

I'm currently in the market for a Polo GTi in sydney, any recommendations for good dealers?

Also, what did you guys pick it up driveaway for?

I'm looking to get one with the sunroof option, but i'm still deciding on the colour, be either white, red or black :?

Any tips when going to buy the car?

Cheers guys!

Hi Blue-Bear,

I picked my GTI up last week, Candy White with leather for $31,500 drive away.

Re the colour, go the white (not that I'm biased or anything j:)

Im in Newcastle so can't give you any ideas re dealers in Sydney so will leave that for others to advise.

Great car, you wont regret it.

Well if you're only option is the sunroof (no leather) you should be able to meet your budget fairly easily.

So far the car is going great - only 500Kms atm so yet to give it a good run. Might have to go for a cruise this weekend.

I stepped up from a 2000 SSS Nissan Pulsar and am more than happy with the upgrade to VW....don't think I would buy a Japanese car again.

ahh, with the driveaway it all includes the dealer delivery etc?

sounds great!

i wonder how much the servicing costs would be on a VW compared to a jap car?

Yep, drive away price covers everything (rego, dealer delivery blah blah blah....)

Not sure on the service costs as haven't got there yet. Would imagine dealer service would be quite a bit more than other places however.

I picked up a Black one last month, no leather or sunroof for just over $29k.
So in regards to dollars, I think if you bring it down to $30,500 for black, or $30,000 for white/red you will have a reasonable deal with a sunroof.

If you are happy with either of the colours, I would ring around and ask if they have one sitting AT the dealer, and give them your price over the phone saying you would buy it straight away - you might find that they will take it - but be careful that you dont get stuck with an 06 build / 07 compliance plate.

When I was looking, there seemed to be a few red ones about, but no black ones or white ones - no offence to the red buyers! ;)

Good luck mate, hope you get a dealer who looks after you well!

I guess its upto you :D

If however you spot a used/demo one with right specs may be worth buying it ;)

Tip: Also buy one with VW Warranty for the just in case situations or in last year of 3 yr standard VW warranty, you can also purchase 1 or 2yrs extended warranties ;)

only took me 30 mins to sign the deal. only 1 min to settle the price!!! basically i walk in and offer 27k, the sale woman did up a deal, and ask her manager. the manager asked for 500 extra. i told her springwood dealer offer me 27200. then she said she'd like to keep the business local, and shake my hand~ i couldnt believe it too!!! coz with springwood deal, it took me more than an hour to get it down to 27200. further, GC dealer is doing a promo on polo range to receive a free 30gb ipod, well worth $300+, and plus the dealer adaptor ard 200 mark. man, i must got the best deal in the courty!

No difference in spec. But an 06 build / 07 comp come resale time (I think anyway) is worth less than an 07 build / 07 comp - it also indicates that the dealer is having trouble moving the car if they still have them now so you should be able to haggle more.

And $27k driveaway is a fantastic deal!!!! over $1500 cheaper than mine, but NSW has higher rego and stamp duty which will eat a bit of that up.

Regardless what price you pay, its all forgotten once it lands in your driveway! :D

I went through a carbroker which landed me at Barloworld Mascot - they were pretty good however I dealt with their corporate sales so can't vouch for their public sales.

I spoke to Denlo for a bit and went for a test drive through them - they seemed like they would be OK to deal with, although if they were a little quicker in responding to my calls I might have done done the deal through them.

I will PM you one to avoid - will explain why there.

No it doesn't have climate control ... but the heater/aircon is pretty good so it's easy to get the temps right.

Denlo's pretty good to deal with in my opinion, although I am still waiting for my car to be here. Been waiting since March, but then I was told I wouldn't get it 'til August when I made the deal. Since March, I've driven my previous car until it had less than a week's worth of rego left, and traded it in two weeks ago, and I'm hopeful of getting a loan car from them sometime this week or next to use before my Polo arrives. So their service is pretty good. And I'm paying $32k for Candy White w/ leather and roof.

Huh! :? Why the wait? There's plenty of Polos in dealers that I've seen...although perhaps not in the colours/spec one might like....but that seems outrageous

Untrue. No harder or more complex than most other FWD cars, and it's pretty much stock standard VAG item

Did you get given the VIN number? Ask for it, they should be able to give it to you. You can track when it gets into each port and when the ship arrives in Sydney.

Hey people

have been lurking on these forums for a while reading everyones opinions and thoughts on their Polo GTIs and after secretly wanting one i have approached the parentals and i definately am getting one within the next 6-8months.

is there any advice you can give me about this car? It'l be my first sports car lol currently im driving a 02 Barina which i love to bits but i want something with a lot more power, actually a lot more power!!

ive rung around for quotes on servicing and drive away packages and so far in my area liverpool seems to be the cheapest.. also any advice on full comp insurance (il be 23 when i get the car hopefully, *fingers crossed*)

any wise words you can give me would be greatly appreciated about anything to do with the car and keeping it in absolute mint condition

im half way through my savings goal and would possibly trade in my barina. im not sure how much id get for a trade, id rather sell it private but i duno what my luck would be like (its in awesome condition, 62,000km).. any ideas? ive checked out redbook and the figures seem okay for private sale but im iffy about trade in.

what are your opinions?

Thanks in advance

They will always quote that price when you walk in.

I wouldn't bother even discussing the price until you are ready to buy. When they tell you the price and get out their forms to write it down, they will be studying your every reaction to see if you think that's cheap or too much or whatever. Just say "Thanks - I'm looking at a few other options so we can discuss price another time". Don't let them know that you are buying a GTI - you want them to think that you have a few options out there and some of them are possibly more tempting than the GTI.

When you are ready to buy, be upfront - tell them you've done your research, and know that others have done deals at around the $27,000 on the road mark. They will more than likely match that. They'll still be making money - no delear EVER sells at a loss despite what they will tell you.

Be polite and dry with dealers - don't be their friend.

thats some sound advice, thanks!

i rang over the phone and got quoted that price so theres probably another reason for that too..

i cant really think of anything else in the polo gti price range that i can possibly use as the "other options" that could be more tempting LOL

I tend to agree and disagree with this.
I agree that its best not to walk in guns blazing saying this is the car you want because some dealers will take advantage of this.

However, being dry and 'not being their friend' is not the best way either.
As a car sales representative i deal with alot of assholes (sorry to be blunt)
and it is totally refreshing when you deal with someone nice.

One example is when you say hello to someone and the first thing they say back is ''whats ur best deal on a suzuki?'' its like... umm how about you introduce yourself, ask me about the car your interested in (specify please, not just something general like ''suzuki'') and actually act like your interested.

And secondly.... new vehicle sales departments sell more cars at a loss than you might like to think.
There is nowhere near as much money in new cars as you might think...

thats some sound advice, thanks!

i rang over the phone and got quoted that price so theres probably another reason for that too..

i cant really think of anything else in the polo gti price range that i can possibly use as the "other options" that could be more tempting LOL

Approach A. "Look, I'm willing to pay $27k on the road right now today, order one for me and it'll be the easiest sale of your career" :D Walk out once they start lying about being below cost etc

Approach B. Haggle between dealers, use different cars as leverage (Swift Sport maybe "Hrm but the swift is so cute  and is 5 grand cheaper!" )

Either way, find a price and don't budge :)

"However, being dry and 'not being their friend' is not the best way either.
As a car sales representative i deal with alot of assholes (sorry to be blunt)
and it is totally refreshing when you deal with someone nice."

Polite = nice. Very different to being a rude ********.

Don't be their friend as in sit around and discuss your fav colour/band or what you're doing on the weekend while their writing up your quote - it's irrelevant. They are trying to desperately build rapport so you feel less inclined to go elsewhere less you feel you are offending the nice VW dealer.

Stick to the topic at hand - the car. Be business like. Show confidence, knowledge and know the price you want to pay. The will have no come back. Save yourself a lot of bull**** & time wasting.
