Ive been trying to understand what i want to put on my car, rather than someone simply putting it on. But im a bit confused between whether to get a stainless steel downpipe or mild steel but ceramic coated?

What do others have and how do they perform?

Thanks!

hey mate!
whats the exact mods you are running???? before I try to direct you..

ive got a 2 3/4 inch ceramic coated downpipe which keeps the heat in(better supposedly!) did I notice a difference, hard to tell because I had the stock pipe before,so difference between SS and this, well who knows...

Im only running an oettinger chip with a GFB BOV. I was also told that ceramic coated draws far more heat than stainless steel and its not prone to fracture under extreme stress...?

From what I've read - The difference is marginal.

Ceremic is best used with extractors because they sit in the enginebay relatively close to the air intake, but otherwise - Its abit of a wank.

I would be doing the cat back first and then doing the dump pipe.its not such a restricted pipe to be so concerned about it.maybe on ricers its a must do,but the gti?I wouldnt have bothered but the price I got was a mates rate so ceramic or not didnt concern me(you are right sov).
why dont you look at getting a TIP first and airfilter where you will notice a HUGE difference???

hey sov! did you get your car back yet???

Sorry George, got to disagree about he down pipe. The std one is weedy and full of clearance dents making the problem worse. A change to a mandrel bent one makes a big difference in spool up.

A mate of mine in the UK has a 2.5 inch one mated to the std system (he commutes about 100 miles a day) and rates it a better mod than having an exhaust done. He has been in lots of chipped A3/GTIs.

I have a 3 inch on mine which fits and doesn't touch anything.

The std exhausts flow pretty good to be honest.

The TIP on the other hand is a top move and a TIP and downpipe would be the first mods, I'd be doing if money was tight.

I have the std A3 system in the shed, I'll get you a picture of the DP.

Exhaust is 2.25 inches

The restriction has to be in the smallest diameter pipe.

suppose you are right gavin,I should have done dump pipe by itself to assertain what power it gave just itself, but being a little impatient I got the whole exhaust done at the same time..Maybe shami could do it seperately and tell us what the benefit was???

how much power gain you think the dump pipe gives gavin?

Ultimately the power is determined by the boost, which is requested by the chip.
The gain from the down pipe as I see it is in the ability for the turbo to spool up quicker due to less restriction down stream.

This would give you more area under the curve, which really means a more flexible car to drive.

It may be with a custom map that you could get more power.

Thanks guys! I was told today that the first meter and a half of the exhaust is the most important. I intend to get the down pipe first then the rest so i'll update you guys as i go. I should get it done within the next few weeks then i'll post pics and my thoughts.

Cheers!!!

If you can get it with a sport cat in, do that too.

242 kw ATW's from the wifes car and its a stock cat back exhaust system .
Dump pipe will work most effectlively with increased boost from a turbo , bolting on a 3 inch dump on a stock 1.8T will yield almost no difference !
