Sadly, we first met on bad terms after she was sold to without it being disclosed that she had been injured in one of melbourne's hail storms, even after taking the seller to court and losing my case it's hard to stay mad at her! So I'm on a mission really to get all of the hail out give the old girl the life she deserves...so here we go!

Set of fully refurbed and powder-coated BBS RS771's (16x6.5 5x100 ET42) imported from europe, I don't think there are any in Aus yet, maybe one or two but yeah, they're pretty rare. And they'll look like this when I get round to fitting them...

Things to do before SEDF (or whatever happens next!):
Retrimmed roof lining.
Sharkfin antenna.
BBS Centre caps
Honeycombe Grilles
and a few other small mods.
And thereafter there will be:
Custom Code
Uprated clutch and LWFW
Some form of lower suspension
and a few other things haha.

Ha Ha,
As for suspension have a look at Performance 3000 on ebay UK
I got a set of FK AK Coilovers landed for $430 and they're wotrking a treat
Done 10,000 kms so far and (touch wood) they have had no problems

Cheers man.
Well I guess that saves me a little bit more money to put towards other bits and bobs haha.
And Smead - yeah I wasn't sure what to do about suspension, was going to go with KW but I think it's a bit overkill, then saw you can get H+R 35mm springs for about $225 so was thinking about those. I actually wish I'd taken those eibachs off you a couple of months back, but I genuinely had no idea what was happening with the car with the court case etc.

Those wheels look sweet, I want a set lol
I would say with a set of those wheels you will want the car to have a good stance
Go Coilovers for sure

I ran those Eibach springs for ages with no probs :) All good anyway
It all comes down to what you want and what you want to spend
Springs are good but not adjustable. If your not fussed on adjustability go springs for sure.
If you want to track it get good coilovers (KW, Weitec etc.)
If you want to dump it, can put up with a bit of a bumpy ride go JOM or FK AK's They are good for the price :)

Where did you pick these up from??
nightphotographer
19-12-2011, 01:22 PM
Yeah it's a tough one cause I think the stock ride is already pretty harsh, I live out in the bush so some of the roads you have to drive are pretty terrible and that's why I was thinking of KW's. I've never been one for lowering a car but I know if I don't I'll get so much hassle for it - might pick up those eibachs, had a set on my last car and that wasn't as harsh as the pog and that was driving the UK's awful roads!

Got a few little updates already -
some FK coils might be on in time for Dub-stitute on Jan 29!
As well as another aesthetic mod which is not to everyone's taste but I've gone with it!
Having some issues with the roof lining retrim, nothing technical just locating the fabric is proving quite difficult as what I want is pretty exclusive so I need somone to custom weave it!!!!
No BBS centre caps as previously mentioned.
Still trying to find the right Shark Fin to order - anyone who can help with this is a legend :)
That's all for now, but there will be some more pics coming when parts arrive etc.

Hey guys - little update, I've decided to go with springs, mainly for price and ride quality over cheaper coils. I'm really not that bothered about height and I think any lower than 20-30mm drop will be too uncomfortable on rural roads.
So I'm looking at the orange tuning site for some H&R's and apparently I need to know my front axle weight and whether it's above or below 930kg - can anyone let me know what it is? Hoping they should be here soon and they'll be fitted before Dubstitute!
seangti
30-12-2011, 10:06 PM
With springs alone and STD struts, your ride quality will deteriorate. The car floats and porposes over bumps, cos it's under damped. Will be worth bearing in mind as you'll likely not like it if you're driving on country roads and changing struts will be needed. I started with just the h&R's and didn't like it. As for your question re the weight, I'm not sure as another forum member did the purchase, i'll have a look in the morning to see if theres any codes on the springs.
kaanage
30-12-2011, 10:18 PM
I TOTALLY agree with seangti's comments about lowering spring kits but I'm no fan of cheap coilovers, either. I'd stay stock if those were the only options.
The GTi engine is heavy - it needs the >930kg front suspension option just like the 1.9 TDi
nightphotographer
05-01-2012, 08:16 AM
Cheers for replies about the springs, I've taken your advice kaanage and the car will remain stock for Dubstitute but I will be finding something shortly after that is more suited to my needs. Right now I don't have time to get a set sent over and fitted, so I'm going to carry on looking!
I've been having a bit more of a think about what I want to achieve personally for 2012 and I want to save a lot of money, but at the same time transform my car into what I want it to be - it's quite contradictive but it means I have to budget and set myself a list of parts/modifications and stick to it - no more spending!
Here is an update of modifications that WILL happen this year:
Custom Code
Uprated Clutch/Flywheel
Milltek Cat Back exhaust or custom downpipe
*POSSIBLE* Seat Sport Intercooler w/ Forge piping
Suspension upgrade (still deciding which route to take)
One of those Forge Diverter valve things!
And there will be SIGNIFICANT aesthetic changes and I'm going to be annoyingly secretive about these, but I'm planning a bit of smoothing, the addition and modification of existing body parts. What's in my head is going to be epic, and I don't want to ruin it by typing it out and hoping others will interpret it the same way - so you'll just have to wait and see :D

look at the Forge DV thread here in the 9N3 polo section. Try Audi TT Stuff-Audi TT Performance Parts and Audi TT Accessories (http://www.ttstuff.com) too as I picked up a Forge DV 008 from this site for only $160ish with free shipping. It was a slight pain as I couldn't track it once it left the US, but I got it in about 3 weeks :) Seems to be the cheapest option at the moment
If you haven't got one already consider a SEAT PD160 intake upgrade. Great mod and I see there is two for sale in the Parts for sale section for around $100. Much cheaper than when I got mine and their not that easy to find these days too.

Yeah it was the first mod I did, it was in my bag of goodies I bought from SEAT when I was visiting the UK, got the Cupra bushes too :) Think I paid about $100 new because I brought it back in my suitcase, prices have gone up over there though, they were about $70 a few years back.

If only it was just one thing I was changing - there's quite a few! And no plans to modifiy the guards as off yet :)
I've been looking into Weitec coilovers - they seem like a nice gap between FK's and KW's and was wondering if anyone had experience with them - I am really more after ride quality over 'stance' at this stage but I might have to invest in these.

Another little update - wheels are on and I do have some night shots already - just finding the time to sit down and upload them!
Hail is slowly making it's way out as my PDR tools slowly arrive in dribs and drabs. No sign of the OEM Shark Fin yet, but fingers crossed that'll be here by DS - only a 2 minute install so that's good.
I've bought myself a Forge FMIC too and a blue motion lip and side skirts - these won't be done by DS, but shortly after so any Melbourne mini meets/cruises - I'll be there. I've also got my heart set on Weitec coils now - found a new set from Awesome GTI in the UK for $740 - I'm over there in a couple of months so will just pick them up and bring them back. They want another $180 for delivery though, so if I get impatient I might just do that - otherwise, bargain coils right there!
Pics up soon and when the FMIC and skirts etc arrive :)

nightphotographer
16-01-2012, 08:09 PM
I know absolutely nothing about electrics and wiring, but after a bit of research apparently I need to connect the DRL's to my sidelight wire or something like that - so when I turn the sidelights on the DRL's come on and when I put my actual lights on they'll turn off - everything else is straight forward, I just don't know where the side light > ignition wire is :/

Front Mount is in and running without any fault codes, still got to finish off the bumper reassembly as I've only been working early mornings/late nights because it's been way too hot for a pom to be outside :)
The bad news is, the DRL's I posted up top are probably gonna have to come off already (I've only had them fitted a week and driven 50km's tops!) because the intercooler piping looks like it's going to be in the way. I'll confirm tonight, but if anyone's interested in a set of DRL's that look brand new - never wired up just fitted to the car for a week then get in touch with me. I'd be looking for $175 which is less than what I paid and you wouldn't have to wait for them to arrive from Europe.

So lucky - with the car still having odd bits of hail it's un-insurable so it could've been a disaster!
I've been meaning to ask you - did my wheels make it to Aus as options? I've heard they were an early option on the MK4, but I've never seen any, seen similar but not splits like mine. I've heard they were an option in Japan so the odd import has had them...they're originally off the MK3 GTI 20th Anniversary in Europe and brought over in a suitcase :)

I'd be keen to see that checked out on a dyno. Not saying it can't be done.
Years ago Splitfire claimed a 10hp gain for some of their sparkplugs on a 1.9 205GTI. Not surprising though when you saw the plugs that came out, you could have measured the gap of the old ones with GPS. ;)

I'm interested too, realy not a bad price for all new OEM coil packs and they look really nice as well. Even if I only get 4 BHP and slightly better fuel economy, it'll make my engine bay a little nicer to look at ;)
noone
10-07-2012, 10:25 AM
I can't see how they could add performance over coil packs that are working well. It's adding a spark, not fuel or boost, so... Would love to see another place to add a few kw.
VWindahouse
10-07-2012, 10:48 AM
I'm pretty sure the 15hp gain is on big turbo applications. Like 500whp+. In this case it just gives the necessary spark required for the application effectively giving back the lost 15hp.

I just want to trial it - think I'll be the first in Australia with one of these mods and possibly one of the first with a BJX trying it - haven't found any Ibiza or Polo owners overseas trying it. It could end up being nothing more than fancy bits of red paint and a signature reading 'MK5 GTI Coil Packs" or it could make a noticeable difference. Who'd know if no one tested it ;) And anyways our cars are getting on a bit - adding newer, more reliable OEM parts should help in one way or another.

Got the same coil packs/adapters on the way.
From what I've read they run a hotter spark than the 1.8T coils.
A lot have been running them with 0.40" gaps and claim smoother power delivery and better idle.
I'm curious to see whether it's just a placebo effect... I have a suspect coil so ordered these as replacements. If there's any power gains it will be a bonus, but not too bothered.
Smead, try Chris from TPR Engineering: chris@tprengineering.com
He's the australian distributor for INA products.

Managed to find a well-priced 9N3 bluemotion lip which will be painted with my side skirts and other bits of colour coding for GAD.
Do tell (or PM), I had a few threads out there for this, no one ever seemed interested...

I have no idea why people wouldn't be interested - maybe because of how hard they are to get hold of. It was a very lucky find on ebay UK using one of the two different part numbers. My mum's gonna bring it over when she visits in September, I've just gotta make sure I have time to get it painted and on before GAD! But I have been searching since 2011 for one, all the bluemotion's that are being parted in the UK all have the lips taken straight away - they are very popular.
There's one going for just over $200 on ebay.de, you could try asking how much it would be to ship it over, annoyingly because of the size it's pretty expensive. Alternatively ask one of the guys who imports the LCR splitters if they could bring you one over and purchase it new from VW UK.

About to spend $1800 on the following and wondered if anyone wanted to throw in any comments/suggestions on cheaper equivalents? This is the best price I can get - shipped.
Milltek Large bore down pipe.
Milltek non-res cat back exhaust.
Forge TIP
Forge TB-IC pipe
Forge DV008
It's the most I've spent so far in one lump, that's why I'm pretty cautious! And they're all coming from the UK, bought separately to avoid any import tax.

They're in - this is obviously before putting the black plastic hoses and **** over the top. Have no idea what that stuff's for, but is there a delete for it all? It's the stuff that covers the left two coil packs. Really easy 'no knowledge' mod to do, plug and play. Probably a complete placebo, but it does feel a little perkier. Will let you guys know if the economy improves too.

Looks awesome.
Search for the SAI/n249 delete. There's been a lot of discussion about it recently. It's a really easy mod which improves DV response by removing the vacuum reservoir system (all that crap over the left coils), and tidies up the engine bay by removing the combi valve and secondary air pump as well. Just need a blanking plate and some resistors which you can get through Preeny @TPR or direct from integrated engineering.

Cheers guys - Yeah it's something I might look at when I get round to tidying up the engine bay - it's a shame it looks so good without all the SAI or whatever crap it is on the top haha!
And seriously so far I'm very happy with the difference, even without a tune it feel's A LOT better. Hope it's not a placebo, but the last time it felt this strong was when I installed the FMIC in summer - it's definitely noticeable. So when finally get my tune by Viezu it should be even better!

Took this from Vortex
Once you have this off, if you got a resistor (10W 330ohm), just slice the covering off both these wires for the pump harness and connect the resistor to the wires whichever way you see fit. The resistor is not directional either. This will keep you from having a "pump missing" CEL, however you will still probably get the improper flow one

Hey mate, love the coil packs!!
For the delete jump on the Integrated Engineering website and go to the electronics section. From there order 2 of the "oval" shaped Post Release resistors and one of the bare SAI resistor. Plus go to the billet section and order their blanking plate.
Just for the record I don't get any CEL's with this set up and have not had the SAI pump written out of the software

Yep - it's just a straight swap of the coil packs only. Such an easy mod, I spent more time degreasing the head than I did actually doing the swap. I am convinced this actually does something as well - replacing 6 year old parts with brand new ones, then having that larger gap, it's such a better drive now.

hey mate sorry but where the coils hard to actually fit into the adaptor plate? I just got mine and they are a right tight fit.

23-08-2012, 09:27 AM
Not sure on the IE ones, but my INA ones were pretty tight! I found it easiest to put the adapter on the coil first.
Flip the coil upside down and push the adapter onto the coil, fingers pushing one way on the coil, palms pushing down on the adapter towards the coil, until the rubber pops over. Then fit the coil onto the plug and screw the adapter down evenly. Repeat x4
Not sure on the benefits, awaiting to see if the missers notices anything, she drives it more...
I set the plug gap (BKR7E-IX) to a tight .040 so prob closer to .039. Power delivery seems... diffferent. I can't put my finger on it, not sure if it's better. It does seem smoother, less on/off aggressiveness. Still monitoring boost levels, when it comes on etc to make sure it's all good. Dyno day this sat should shed some light on the power curve...

They're not so bad on other colours, but with mine being white they just contrast too much, and they're so faded and scratched I just wanted something different...I think it's a really important aesthetic change, and getting rid of any plastic trim with colour coding is always a winner :)

As for the LCA bushes; The one time I did this with a buddy we had a workshop press. Just use the proper size tools when using the press. If you don't have one: HOW TO change the lower control arm bushing - TDIClub Forums (http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=154137) However I would put something between the new bushings and the vice not the damage them.
What do you want to know, mate? It's a pretty easy job technically but it can be a pain in the ass getting the stock struts out of the hubs and also getting the top mounts off..
Well exactly those two things.... The splitting of the hub won't be to much of problem I imagine; I have some materials to create makeshift tools for that. But what about mounting the new strut? How do you prep the hub? Do you clean it with a wire brush/sand paper and grease it up with something like a standard graphite grease?
How do you know the alignment of the strut regarding the mounting plate for the anti-roll bar linkage? Is there perhaps a non-symmetrical shape or male female setup on the end of the strut to ensure alignment?
To avoid noise problems I would change the top bearing as a precaution. On my 6n I've tried to loosen the top locking nut by hand the right way but the allen key went dull. I was able to release the top locking nut with a basic airtool (using coil compressors). How about that?
KW says replacing the drop links for short/adjustable ones isn't necessary. I assume this is true for the lowering range THEY specified? How about dropping it a bit lower than the allowed 40 mm?
Sorry to post this in your topic nightphotographer, but I imagined these question (and hopefully answers :D) would be helpfull to you to.
Cheers

The hub I just gave a really good clean, and then prepped with a thin layer of high pressure/temperature grease to prevent water penetration.
Alignment is assisted by an alignment/locking tab on the rear of the strut through which the hub's pinch bolt passes. You can sort of rotate the strut back and forth while jacking the hub up onto it to get the new one in.
KWs have a revised (elevated) drop link mounting tab to prevent the need for shorter links, even when low. The ride is pretty horrible when it's really low, though, so consider that, hah! If you want low, I would say just install without the purple spring perch adjusters in the rear (as low as possible), then match the front for height (or go about lower at the front).
The Allen key in the top of the stut is 7mm which is a prick of a size to even find to start with. In the at least it's 6mm. If you're not worried about potentially damaging your stock struts you may be able to loosen the top nut a could of turns while the struts are on the car/under load to make it easier to get off once it's all out of the car. Either way you will need an offset 13/16" ring spanner.
If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

Thanks leitch... really useful.
7mm Allen key is not a problem over here any bigger shop than the local-hobby-bob has them on stock. Where do you use the 13/16" for? I assume for loosening the top spring/bearing nut but shouldn't that be 21mm? And when i used the air tools i didn't even bother holding the piston, the nut should come off easily with that kind of tools since it's only tightened to 60Nm and it shouldn't really be seized because it's protected from dirt.
I've just been going through elsa, some tips:
Top strut mounting bolts (3 pc): 15nm + 90 deg [replace after removal]
Top strut spring/top bearing locking (on piston) nut (1pc): 60Nm [replace after removal]
coupling rod to suspension (drop link): 40Nm [replace nut after removal]
Elsa suggests using a workshop jack in order to reinstall the strut to hub carrier. It's says to mount the strut with the 3 bolts for the upper shock absorber mounting. Then position workshop jack under wheel bearing housing. While jacking push the brake disc TOWARDS the strut because the shock absorber tube can become skewed in the bore of the hub carrier.
I've just put it on...maybe it's my positioning but I'm not sure if it suits, fully debadged looks pretty good. I'll put a pic of the new badge up soon - maybe tomorrow when I'll have some more lowz :P

CheersYep sorry 21mm should work - I went with 13/16 because the deep spark plug style socket in my Sidchrome set fit perfectly and is 13/16 nominal size. You're right it shouldn't seize but after five years of disuse, I remember the nuts and threads on my stock struts had plenty of surface rust and were pretty hard to get off.
The comment about the jack under the hub is exactly right. I was going to mention it but couldn't really think of how else anyone would do it - you won't be able to lift the hub assembly onto the strut by hand, that's for sure. With it supported by the jack you have your hands free to ensure that it's aligned properly.

Ok that's to bad about the corrosion, haven't remove the protecting caps yet. Just hope for the best then.
I've also had a look at the 'special' tool to spread/open the hub; it's basically a 1/2" closed socket with a small lip on top (like the tip of a flathead screwdriver). Elsa instructions are to place it and rotate it 90 degrees, and thus prying the hub open. This can be done by any other tool in my opinion as long as the absorber tube is not damaged. Something like a jig made from hardened steel would suffice.
I'm going shopping for kw v1's now :P

Colour coded rear bumper is now done - looks like I need a massive detail to get the rest of the paint back to the original colour! Any tips would be appreciated, so far thinking just a mega cut and polish with a machine buffer - any other tips to getting the paint back to showroom condition would be awesome.

Now here's the annoying part, I've got my 9N Side Skirts painted too - they fit fine and look really cool, but I need some help choosing what adhesive to use to fit best. Whatever was used from factory to hold the originals in was REALLY good - how can I get some that good? Is it worth paying VW to do it - should only take an hour, I don't mind if I get a great fit that's going to last. Here's a test fit:

Those gaps are normal by the way, they're covered by these little blanking plates, I just hadn't fitted them.

Bunnings sell a good weatherproof mounting tape, I held lights on a bathroom wall for years, never budged. Might be a little thick tho, I'd run a small bead of something after they're on to make cleaning easier
Is the Bluemotion lip close?

Cheers man - I was gonna nip out to bunnings later to see what they had. The lip will be here on Friday, then it's off to the paint shop and then onto my car for GAD :)

You could start off by claying your car yourself, that's easy to do and could give some improvement. If you just care about gloss even a polish (without cutting) can give you a nice result; check this A4 (http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=nl&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=nl&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.carclean.nl%2Fcc_postst14634% 2FAudi-A4-Avant-20-TFSI.aspx); only (heavy) polishing pads were used.
If you actually want to get rid of swirls or small scratches... than you're in for a treat, i have to use wool pads to correct our VW cars, the hardest cutting pad wasn't enough.
Just buy the adhesive from VW no need to pay them for fitting.

Went a little quiet for a while on the lead up to GAD - partly because I was on holidays and busy working on the car, but also because I wanted to save pictures until the car was fitted out!
So new parts are:
Viezu Stage 1 Tune - no idea of KW output, but it's a lot faster than stock obviously.
ECS Stage 1 Clutch and 14lb flywheel
Forge TIP, DV008 and TB>IC Hose
9N3 Bluemotion Lip (would love to know if this is the first in Aus - anyone who has one or knows of one please let me know!)
9N Side Skirts (not sure on the name of the style, but they're a few mm lower than the stock GTI ones and are colour coded)
Colour coded rear bumper.
KW's wound all the way down on the rear, maybe 20mm more to go on the front, to protect the front lip mainly.
Wheels pictured - Audi A8 Winter Wheels (mono blocks) 17x7.5 ET40 on 205/40/17 15mm adapters on the front and 25mm on the rear.

Haven't had chance to upload any new shots or details because I'm still waiting for the internet to be connected at my new place. However I've found a recent shot of my car on here I'm going to steal and post :)

Still needs to be lower - will be on 16's again shortly (more new wheels!) so that should help out a fair bit :D
Wheels pictured are Porsche Cayennes 17x7.5 ET53 with 25mm adapters all round. 195/40's too. Static shots will follow when I've got the internetz.

It's a 9N3 Bluemotion Lip imported from Europe. Aiming to get a few more over soon, but they're pretty hard to find even overseas.

It fit's perfectly fine as it's from the same chasis - it's just a tighter fit than it was on my last car that also shared the same chasis. It rubs on the rubber seal - that's all.
