Right im starting again now all my random Threads have left the first page! This is my first Mk1 Golf and and besides that I had a Mk2 that got us to Glastonbury and back and didn't miss a beat.

She has had a full clutch kit fitted what i got robbed by a garage getting fitted, But didnt really have a choice as I only managed to get 25k down the coast after buying her from Freo b4 i hit a hill and she wouldn't make it to the top. Then it was Tow truck time!

Anyway Im thinking of keeping her as standard as possible due to the near perfect condition the body is in, Just mayb a 30-50mm drop and some nice wheels!(and the European GTi bumper if i can get hold of one in Perth).

I have just fitted a new radiator thanks to Grant (roccodingo) and sanded down and sprayed the fan housing. I have changed all the vacume pipes that where leaking and waiting for a new elbow hose, Dip stick and a few other thing as the engine was struggling as it couldn't Build up pressure. (I really dont have a clue what im talking about but this is what i have been told lol). So im hoping once I stop all the air leaks she will be running sweet again.

Any help and advice would be very much appreciated cheers!

Now for the pictures

Keep the big bumpers... the more chrome the better! And they can (supposedly) take something like a 10km/h bump and save the body!

Good luck with it. I looks great so far!

Can anyone tell me where this vacume pipe goes?

Its a 6mm pipe that comes thru the fire wall right next to the wiring loom, as mine a left hand drive it comes out just next to the clutch peddle.

When i bought the car it wasn't connected to anything and was split. I have pulled it out and replaced it with a new pipe but have know idea where it connects to i think it was pushed in behined the fuse box but cant see anywhere it connects??????

Pictures below.

It might be the one that connects to the back of the multifunction display in the dash? It is used for the miles per gallon economy.

EwenHayton
19-12-2011, 08:50 PM
As i dont have a MPG gauge, just the change gear display, so do i need it? and if not can i get rid of it?

roccodingo

Ewen,
most likely the vacuum pipe that connects to the LHD factory aircon switchgear, its located behind the dash where the levers & knob are.

EwenHayton
20-12-2011, 10:24 AM
Would I have to take the dash off to reattach it? Or can I just take the the section out where the controles are?

roccodingo
20-12-2011, 07:55 PM
just take the Heating / cooling controls out. Be careful as the small tabs are fragile with the age of these cars. Have you a Bentley manual yet ??

EwenHayton
20-12-2011, 08:33 PM
No.... Well I have a pre 1984 Manuel didnt read the add properly! As I wanted 1986. I had it apart earlier but couldn't see anywhere it could fit!. It was probably staring me in the face!

FINALLY!!!! Figured it out, The Vacuum hose is for the Vacuum Vent Valves on the Break and clutch Peddle for the Cruise Control system!.

You have know idea how many manuals i downloaded to find this one! But it covers everything and best of all it was FREE!

cool, glad you found out where they connect to. I did see the vacuum chamber on the throtle cable but didnt realise there were other components in the vacuum circuit...

Merry Christmas :D

EwenHayton
27-12-2011, 02:41 PM
So could that have been another reason why i was having issues with air leaks or is that a separate Vacuum system and is only used for the Cruise Control?

Merry Christmas to you to, Hope you had a good one!

There are sometimes one way valves in places but I am guessing it might be related.

Love that you kept researching and nailed it.

Merry Christmas to you to, Hope you had a good one!

Definately another source of engine vacuum leak ( the engine is the pump ) so hooking that stuff back up or plugging the vacuum line will make a diff.

Did you test the rest of the cruise control vac plumbing ?? ( connect a pipe and suck it, if it doesnt hold vac, you still got a leak.)

No but i will now. I'm still waiting for the dip stick and Elbow vacuum pipe that comes off the rocker cover to arrive b4 i have fixed all the visual leaks! (couldnt have ordered stuff at a worse time for the post).

Cheers tho for the advice

Hey all,

Got 3 questions if anyone can help?.

1) Im planning on changing the speakers in her and finding it easy to get hold of 4x6 for the front but the 4x4 rears are becoming hard to find. Would it be easier to fit a different size and if anyone has any recommendations of make and wattage, i have a Sony xplod head unit if that makes a difference.

2) With the 1.8Gti engine is there away of getting a little more power out of her with out busting the wallet to much? was looking at putting K&N airfilter in but not sure if it would make too much of a difference?

Changed my mind only had 2 Questions after all lol!

Decided to keep the original wheels, Had a brain wave to give them a little detail than just the boring full black rim. Sanded the outer rim and gave it a chrome wall that follows on the new chrome sill trim, Very chuffed as it cost nothing and now im happy with the wheels and can just get Coilovers and no need for rims! Brucey Bonus!

I still have it safe incase I feel like doing some cutting to the mounts. I was missing a few plastic caps and needed new rubber end caps!.
Also my misses is already hating the amount I'm spending on her so was easier to just take it off! Lol!
Fingers crossed should get the springs soon then my other Disk brake and all need is a chrome grill trim!......... For now anyway lol

Jace

All you need to do it drill a hole in the bumper shock to release the pressure and then drive the car up against a wall and push it in to the body.

EwenHayton
24-01-2012, 06:12 PM
There was no bumper shocks just 2 bolts holding the bumper mount to the chaise!

do you not fit the bumpers back?

EwenHayton
15-02-2012, 06:06 PM
No i took the front bumper off and left it off waiting to get some round indicators to fit on the front and just a duck bill! I left the back one on as it looks pretty sweet with all the chrome, but the front one just stuck out way to far and was missing some plastic trim that made it look ****

EwenHayton
18-02-2012, 04:44 PM
just a stupid question! does anyone know a way to stop the rear view mirror from vibrating when driving? everything looks like a blur in it and unfortunately its not down to the speed of the car lol!

---------- Post added at 03:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:24 PM ----------

Also finding this offset stuff rather confusing, Would 16''x7'' with an offset of +40 fit with a 40mm suspension drop?

mikinoz
18-02-2012, 05:14 PM
16x7 et40 will fit, but might need some spacers to make it right, I'd say a pair of 10mm up front and 15mm at the back might work it to a good look.

And it depends on your front brake calipers as well.

Depends on the rubber too.

EwenHayton

Anybody got a block and tackle in Perth that would be willing to let me use for a carton of piss? Need to pull the right hand side forward about 10mm! Think previous owner must have had a bump at one point and my grill doesn't sit flush!

I have considered just chaining to a tree and reversing but thought i would see if anyone had the proper equipment first!

Just a quick question, any help would be good I had a quick search on the tinternet for 8v engine re-builds but only realy came up with UK information. What I'm asking really is if anybody in W.A has had a rebuild so to speak or just a engine clean up and can recommend anywhere that isn't going to try and rip me off with some European engine bull**** costing a fortune? Even if anyone knew a place or someone I could take it to just get the engine checked! So I can buy parts that are needed as I go along!

Mate gutted to hear about your accident. That wheel is ruined! I know it gets said every time but as long as you're ok man. Everything else can be fixed. Good luck with the stripping man take a look at that wheeler dealers episode with the fiat 500, Edd China strips it down for spraying and he does this awesome trick for getting the windows in and out which I couldn't explain on here if I tried, here's a link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mco6CwMsIBs&feature=youtube_gdata_player) actually. I think it's in part 1 where he takes them out and part 2 they go back in.

Bit of a noob question. But does anybody know if there is a difference between a left LHD exhaust system and RHD. Headers an all the way to back box and tail pipe?

From what i can see the headers have a straight down bend to the center of the car and then from the cat it seems tobe the same as the systems im looking at but all from uk and RHD cars, Tho i have never seen a Mk1 golf with the tail pipe on the other side so just after some confirmation from someone who knows what there talking about "as i clearly dont" lol

ByronRichesMk1
17-06-2012, 04:57 PM
Headers are slightly different dude to be able to clearance the steering rack. I know that much. As far as the undercarriage (middle/end) part. I would have presumed it would be the same, so long as the tailpipe exits on the correct (which ever that is) side?
More than happy for someone to correct me though..

EwenHayton
17-06-2012, 05:13 PM
That's what I was thinking as im pretty sure the floor plans are the same on both LHD and RHD models. Also with the tail pipe mounted on the rear left hand side to.

Might have to look on either USA or German ebay then for a header i didn't realise the steering rack was so close!
Cheers

17-06-2012, 07:57 PM
Some time ago Luke ( volksee77) and myself were in contact with Techtonics tuning about their 4 into 1 race header, In Speaking with Collin Gynes we worked out that there is a 98% chance a header for a LHD car will indeed fit a RHD model. The rack is not the problem, its the steering column uni joint on the RHD car that is likely to cause interference. I will ask the guy's in the UK when I am there in a few weeks time.

Right then so not sure if anyone's interested but I am and I'm bored so here goes!
Thought I would have another look at all the history I have with the golf that goes back to the original buyers receipt
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/06/c006ce85-1.jpg.
As I want rid of the caterlistic converter that was put on by the previouse owner and I have read on another thread if it didn't come standard and was privately shipped its fine not to have one.
Anyway back to what I was getting towards. I have just about everything from when the car was bought thru to shipping from america when the vehicle was owned by a man called Andrew T Dimond from Virginia who worked for the American Embassy. Managed to find his address and details and thinking about sending him a letter saying his car is still about and so on. Not sure wether he would care but I know I would find it interesting. After all Andrews receipts it gets to the letter of import approval in 02-03 but then i have nothing till 2011 were it picks back up to the date I bought her.
What I'm iterested in is if any body new the owner who imported the car to W.A then man was called Vernon Hadley and lived in Kallaroo. Just want to fill in the gaps in the history????

Yep, they're solid lifters all right.

To adjust them you need to check the clearances between the cam and lifter with a feeler gauge and swap the shim (disc on top of lifter) for a thicker or thinner one if the gap is wrong.

Any workshop manual for the golf details the process and the correct gap setting.

Replacing the shims with the cam in situ needs special tools and a range of spare shims in assorted thicknesses.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/07/shimkit-1.jpg

You can do the measurement with out any special tools (apart from a feeler gauge) to see if you've got an issue or not.

Any of the older VW places will have the shims and tools.

So car is in the paint shop and shuld get her back on Monday, as its gonna take a few days if not a week to put back together not to mention getting exhaust fitted.

I have decided to take off the head and clean and polish it once she gets home. Gotta put a new water pump on anyway so the belts have gotta come off and i have already drained the coolant, Plus with the cam shaft coming i thought f**k it might as well while the hoods open!

Hopefully she might make it to kallbarry for a family holiday so i can get some good photos in February!

Wish me luck guys lol

Everything on that list besides the camshaft is just from ebay and who ever the seller is using! But with the larger stuff i have had from the uk i get sent to my mums then she waits till theres a few bits there and uses.
Parcel2Go | Courier Services | Express Parcel Delivery Company (http://parcel2go.com)
We found they are yhe cheapest! But with the camshaft thats from The US an sent with USPS and was only $60!
Ive had higer shipping quotes from the east coast to Perth than some from England!

As for interior all I wanna do is get a new drivers seat "as mines a lefty a passengers for most" as all foam has gone just about and fit some missing screws as I like the original look in side and it's in amazing condition.

So then busy day today,

Managed to hone the piston sleeves fit new Piston rings and big end bearings, Fit them back in the engine block.
Got the old water pump off and the middle big pulley (thats the professional term) to swap the seal as there was alot of dried old oil below it.

Fitter sump back on and would have fitted the water pump but there was 2 of the long bolts missing so need to find out what size they are (if anybody knows and can help?) and then I can fit A/C back all new belts and be ready for the top half! Once it gets back from the shop.

could take pics during day as it was pissing it down for most of it and by time it stopped it was dark! but will take some tomorrow!

Getting there slowly hopefully be end of the month and i will hear her speak again!!!!

So if anybody has one in Australia (Perth) for sale i would be very keen to take it off your hands? Also might as well ask while im on the comp b4 i open the old Bentley can anyone tell me what tool i need to take the bolt/nut/thing that the cir-clip sits behind? picture below "I just read my Bentley manual please forget that last bit about the tool turns out im the tool!!!! lol http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/10/IMG_2217-1.jpg

Was meant tobe putting head back on this weekend but has been put back a week! :( so decided to check the valve adjustment disc messurments so i can fugure out the size needed for the new cam if any at all!
For anyone who dosent know hes what i did "im sure theres other ways but might help someone"

As the camflowers were out already numbered in seperate bags so they go back on the correct valve. With a pair of vise grips (not the correct tool but worked) pulled the shim out to see the number underneth pic below
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/10/78B2318FF04C45CCAB01F5F3072865A923310000-1.jpg

Finding the size of the disc already in will let me know the thickness needed and how much its out if at all!
Also as the shim kits are pretty expensive and hard to find i found 2 site where you can buy them seperatly or in kits lonked below.

TOOL Page (¯`·.¸(¯`·.¸ ZDMAK SPECIAL TOOL STORE ¸.·´¯)¸.·´¯) (http://www.zdmak.com/wbstore/main.asp?action=PROD&PROD=K-DISCPAK&CTMP=1&LowCt=0)
Valve Clearance Discs (http://www.cylinderheadsupply.com/valve-clearance-discs.html)

Mine where 31mm in diamiter but not sure if this veries!
Hope that helps someone anyway.

Heres the Valve clearence spesifications table to

So finally got my head back!!!!!! Fitted valves, new seals and G-grind camshaft.
Almost got lucky with the solid lifter shims and only needed to replace 3 of them. So as i was feeling happy i bought a middle exhaust muffler and there was only one i could brin myself to buy the old faithful cherry bomb glasspack!
Should hopfully apply abit of back pressure than just a straight thru and also deepen the exhaust note instead of it being abit raspy!

OK, assuming you've got sparks, your k-jet system need priming.

They can be a bugger to get started with air in the system.

Here's what I do.

Hot wire the fuel pump relay so it runs constantly.

Take the boot off the fuel metering head and pull up gently on the air flow flap.

This will allow fuel to flow to the injectors and get the air out of the lines.

Don't over do it or you'll flood the engine.

You'll hear the injectors squeal when there's fuel getting there. The noise is called pintle rattle in the books.

Put the boot back on, re-instate the fuel pump wiring and with a bit of luck it'll start right up.

Glad to hear you got it running, thought you were going to leave it til sunday morning later when we talked on the phone Ewen. Did you check the injector delivery rate into seperate bottles first ??

EwenHayton
09-12-2012, 10:25 AM
No just did the timing again and tried that first and it started! Getting abit of smoke from behind the engine dosent smell like exhaust fumes not sure if it could be a the new manifold burning off weld paint or something???
Will do the injectors at a later date meed to get a switch and make that bridging thing you spoke about!
Just going to tinker with the idle air and mertering unit 3m allen key bit!

EwenHayton
12-12-2012, 09:37 PM
Lmao! Yeah got her sorted yesterday i thought i new what i was doing when playing with the fuel metering unit! And clearly didnt have a clue! Engine was getting flooded and couldnt spark! Not i think its got a slight miss fire but cant tell 100% untill i get exhaust made up as its way to loud to be able to listen to the engine!

So gonna do timing one last time so its perfect then get exhaust built just gotta save up (christmas and 2 kids dont help) then just tinker with the idle so its running nice and its done!!!!!

"For now"

The day has finally arrived....! after Grant hooked me up with an Exhaust system (much appreciated) and i managed to buy a mig welder and a grinder! To the best of my ability lacking a pipe expanding tool i managed to build the exhaust system today and took her for the first drive in just short of a year. A very short drive as the idle and fuel/air mixture is a mess. But thats just a tune.

So i managed to get a few pics after a wash and fitting some missing bits i had took off forgot about the exhaust as its not exactly sitting where i wanted it but it was my first time welding and putting an exhaust together. Some where down the line she will get a techtronics system.

So here she is not a show car but the best i could get her to my budget and time frame!

(would not recommend doing this to anyone unless they a single and live at home, Have a very well paid job and an understanding misses or has a workshop full of tools and equipment in there back yard. I have none of the above lol)

Day i got her! (originally for the misses lol)

Having re-set the timming a million and one times im still off with it! Getting slight back fire from what i can hear its the inlet valves are slightly open when spark is happening and its popping at the back of the engine! Any body in perth who has done this befor feel like givin me a hand for 10-15min? Im at a loss and dont think i can read one more timing guide!!!

gldgti
08-01-2013, 03:14 PM
Sounds like you have a few things to check before you go too much further:

> inlet manifold bolts are all tight - make sure you dont have a vacuum leak. Did you use a new manifold gasket? If you can't find anything obvious, but you can get the engine to idle (even if only roughly) you might be able to find the leak by using the following dubious but effective method - I take no responsibility if something bad happens!!! - basically, while its running spray something like WD40 heavily onto potential leak points (like the throttle body assembly, vacuum lines or where the manifold joins the head). If there is a vacuum leak, the wd40 will be sucked in and for a second while the area is 'wet' the engine will probably pick up. There are all sorts of potential dangers ofcourse but its an old mechanics trick and it works well....
> exhaust manifold/headers bolts all tight?
> get a timing light and time the engine with the vacuum unplugged but blocked to 8 deg BTDC. Thats roughly correct and will get you in the ball park. There should be a mark on the flywheel... if you can find the TDC mark, just look anticlockwise around the flywheel about 8 degrees and you'll find the timing mark :-)

If you have any vacuum leaks at all (even at the throttle body bushings) you wont be able to time the engine properly.

EwenHayton
08-01-2013, 05:34 PM
All new gaskets and tightend all the bolts today but will give that trick a go on the weekend! (with a hose pipe ready at my side lol).

Dont have a timing light but i have got every other mark spot on to the timing specification's and im pretty sure theres no vacuum leaks as i changed most the fittings for new. But i will go over everything again!

This may be a full noob question but which vacuum are you referring to when you say block it! The one going to the dizzy?

Cheers for the advice

Timing light bought fingers crossed be here next week!

EwenHayton
09-01-2013, 12:36 AM
had a look over everything once again double checked all bolts where tightened and vacuum was all hooked up and all looked good from what i could see so loosened the the dizzy cap and turned her over again was struggling to idle with out a small back fire and coming close to stalling, Started to move the dizzy gently to anti clockwise and she just picked up and started to idle around 1000rpm and zero back fire! (from the inlet or back of the engine) as in the vid there are 2 but there coming from the exhaust what i THINK is down to the air-flow sensor not been attached so running rich!!!! mayb wrong as up until around a year ago engines worked by magic!!!!

here's a vid been idling for about 5min at 1000rpm
Vw mk1 golf exhaust sound - YouTube (http://youtu.be/guZeYTXA8KI)

also oil smells of fuel should i drop it and change?
could this have been from all the flooding prier to her starting and the miss firing?

Any way besides the engine whats doing my head in now small list of cosmetics left to do trim wheel arches as i forgot to roll them, hook middle grill lights up (have no idea where to start) and spray one sill with black stone chip!
Im sure there's more as i wrote on the last page i had finished.......! Fricking idiot i own a mk1 im never going to be finished!!!!!!!

Oxygen sonsor back in and hooked up!
Also think i have massive Vacuum leak coming from the injector o-ring seals "or clearly lack of" as when you flick the throttle you can hear a massive whistle type sound coming from the of the engine and everything else has been triple checked for tightness!

Any one got any for sale????

Well Bit late but been busy with work!
So anyway a MASSIVE THANK YOU has to be said to grant (roccodingo) for helping me get the old girl running intime for my Girlfriends family arriving from uk so we have enough cars to get them about in now! And she would have still been up on jacks had it not been for his help.

So anyways the girls is back on the road and took her for a drive with the top down for the first time in nearly a year what was pretty damn good and drove alot better than i thought she would! needs a wheel alignment and to get 100% need to be put on a dyno to get fuel mixture correct but atm she is running better than she has since i bought her.

Tho i have found a massive oil leak coming from the sensor on top of where the oil filter mounts, The sensor closest to the engine with a blue wire coming off it. also the BAR gauge in the center console is showing very high pressure high as in reads 6 and it only goes up to 5 lol!

Not sure if this is down the the oil sensor i was just talking about?????

Anyway back to the good news i will post a vid of her driving (probably for my own satisfaction) but if any one cares there will be one soon

gldgti
18-01-2013, 08:19 AM
the oil pressure regulator on the pump might be stuck. That wouldnt be unlikely if the engine was sitting for a long time.

Probably the easiest way to fix it would be to fit a new oil pump, or a known good one at least. You can probably unstick the pump you've got but its a bit of a job to get it all apart as the regulator is contained with a welch plug type arrangement.

You can seal the leak at the sensor with a new copper washer - 3/8 or 10mm I think will work. (The thread is 1/4NPT im pretty sure which is almost exactly M10x1mm, so a 10mm copper washer should fit under it.

EwenHayton
18-01-2013, 11:56 AM
Am i right in thiniking the pump regulator is at bottom of the engine under the sump cover? I did clean that part when the engine was appart!

And the sensor is leaking from around the white plastic part at the top of the sensor! If that makes sence??? So just gonna get a new one think there like $30 shipped

Is the car ok to drive tho?

Yeah if the sensor is doing that it might be the only problem.

If its only leaking a bit you'll be right to drive it.

Yes Grant you're right M10x1 it is, and you can use 1/4 NPT tapered fittings if not using sealing washers....

Spent 2hours looking at the wiring for the headlight and middle grill lights and drinking beer and have no fricking idea how to get the 2 middle lights to work!!!! Read the diagrams and looked at the pictures. But just confused me even more!!! Lol! Does anybody know an easy way to make these lights work? A video of which wire should be connected or something coz i am lost right now lol! And untill i hook up a HID upgrade its like driving by candle light

roccodingo
23-03-2013, 10:56 PM
check these wire colours on the back of the main lamps,

Yellow/ black trace = left lamp low beam
yellow = right lamp low beam

White / black trace = left lamp hi beam, should loop over to the inner left "spottie"
white = right lamp hi beam , same as above, should loop over to inner hi beam light.

If the outer lights work on both lo and Hi beam then its just the inners arent recieving power ( check wire at inner light socket earthing to battery negative, test light should light up. if it doesnt then the wire from the outer lamp has lost continuity to inner lamp socket. if test light comes on then the earth ( brown wire ) from the inner lamps isnt attached to the body earth point.

If you want I can turn night into day by making you a headlamp relay set up.

Think you will find retrofitting HID lamps contravenes the ADR rules, cops are handing out yellow stickers for non OEM fitted lamps. do a search, the units need to be self leveling and self cleaning to pass ADR regs.

EwenHayton
23-03-2013, 11:32 PM
You made that sound so simple yet im still confused!! Mayb the beer isnt helping lol! Might have more luck in the morning.

Would you be able to hook us up with a hid relay set up? Just let us know what it'll cost co its not much fun driving at night at the min lol!

Cheers

Been looking into replacing the roof as my next project for after winter or mayb during...! as the seem along the top has split so only matter of time needed a new liner and top pad anyway!

But found this site and thought somebody might find it useful at some point.

Im sure there are loads more but this was pretty good as it links a few retailers at the bottom.

Also im sure a few of you will have seen it already but for those who havent you can make your own rain gutter for above windscreen where the roof handles are link below.

so the old girl decided to throw a random one at me today. The bar Gauge has been running at full from when i finished putting her back together from the first turn on the key in the ignition but car works fine figured it must just be a random fault. Worn crank/big end bearings.... when you put your foot on the clutch you are putting some thrust on the crank and it might be helping to re-pressurise the bearings.

Has the engine been run without oil before?

EwenHayton

The fact that pushing the clutch pedal down was changing the guage readings may suggest cleaning and tightening the engine earthing points Ewen, the clutch cable was changing the earthing resistance values...
