No doubt about it Julian.

Have you looked for any Golf GTI MK4 shocks on eBay etc? These may be slightly better at controlling the rear suspension than
the stock ones. From memory the MK4 GTI had a rather plush ride.
I noticed some bilstein B4 ones for about $130 a pair.

No I haven't. The trouble is that I need Mark 4 Golf rear dampers and (I think) Polo front ones.

Something like: Shipping costs are a killer from UK.. US may be cheaper.
Bilstein B4 Rear Shocks VW Golf Mk4 1.8T GTi absorbers standard & lowering kit | eBay (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/705-53470-19255-0/1?campid=5336618722&toolid=10001&mpre=http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Bilstein-B4-Rear-Shocks-VW-Golf-Mk4-1-8T-GTi-absorbers-standard-lowering-kit-/230703370284?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item35b6fe102c#ht_3854wt_1097)
I assume at the front you could use Polo 9N2 (2005-2009) TDI or GTI shocks.
