The missus has always wanted a larger car and with our second child at 18months the old audi a4 was getting a little small. Looked at the multivan and caddy's but thought i would give in to the boss and get her something nice.
Not bad for a 5th wedding aniversary present, even if it's a week late.
Picked it up from Canberra yesterday, always loved the idea of Canberra cars , and it was a snack of a drive back. Fully optioned it really is a nice place to be.
Flappy paddle gearbox and sport setting gives some damm impressive results, big power for a big car.

Have really enjoyed this thing lately , really complete car. Just coded the keys to seat and mirror memory sets, makes it super easy, open the door and the seat and mirrors move to the presets.
Changed the front pads today, such a pleasure, nice to work on purpose built calipers. Don't understand why oem calipers haven't gone the pad from the outside route, really make changes a breeze.

Would love to do a exhaust for it , pretty hard to get that one pass the missus though. The centre box/ cat merge pipe is huge so much room to do anything under there.
Have had a little hesitation at mid range, with a little looking about the manifold actuator arm had snapped, the lower one which aids mid range torque.
Had read about them going bad so I was straight to them for inspection.
Bodged up an arm to get me by and the car feels free of the little flatness.
I have some gruven arms on the way, In hindsight could have just lived with the bent up Tig rod but worth doing worth doing correctly.

Have you considered an engine swap with the MK1, just leave the V8 engine cover in your wife's car. This way you can have a nice burble and your wifes car looks stock standard. Sounds to me like a win-win situation :D

Have had major problems with the air con, something I neglected to fully try on purchasing, but damm the misus tried it as soon as I got it home and was peaking to put it mildly.
Scanned the car and got a code referring to the signal between the fan and module.
The new control module finally arrived and was slightly different but vagcomed it and nothing, same old problem.
Mad I was.
So out came the tools and out with the dash, thinking that there had to be problems with the flaps or an obstruction somewhere, studying the PDF for the hvac I couldn't find the top 3 servo motors, but they are mounted on the other side on our rhd Australian touaregs. I removed the centre vent and diffuser and could see most of the flaps moving and could feel the cold air passeges changing.
Motor out again spins up fine out of the housing , changes through the range, damm it getting real angry now.
Then with a stroke of luck I found a post from another Aussie Adam aka gympitreg on Club Touareg
http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f67/learning-how-to-use-the-site-63779-5.html
In which he found out that lhd and rhd fan housings are different and at further investigation the fans faced the other way , wham like a bolt of lightning it hit me.i was always suspect of the fan as I could see it had been changed and had some slight scoring .
So the previous owner had done a half job and just changed the internals for a lhd motor.
So quick fix I reversed the polarity and ran the fan backwards and to the wife's pleasure it's blowing, obviously not 100% but enough to cool the car,and with a rhd fan It will rock.
Rns2 and module out and the double din surround, you need to remove it to wedge out the spring clips for the control module.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/01/IMG_3398-1.jpg
Half the car it was , with the lower section of the centre vent removed I could see the flaps moving
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/01/IMG_3400-1.jpg
There's the bastard right there.and the rest of the system shoehorned in there.
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2012/01/IMG_3403-1.jpg
The new control module was slightly different , had ac on the second button instead of Econ so I changed the facias over.

It's one of those things bro , I could have made something but would have involved the car being out of action for a day or two , and it's a case of doing it once and sorting the problem.

Great work on the 'treg.
Would you care to share a link/contact details for the EPS Drive Shaft Bearing part that you have sourced, please? Currently looking at 2007 - 2009 3.0Lt V6 TDI Touaregs (with a view to purchasing one) and this is an area of concern for me. Your stealthy investigative skills have given me hope that the one issue that concerns me, may not be the hurdle I thought it would be.

I was always a fan of the Touareg - mainly because I always thought one would look good done up like this.
I don't know if you ever saw the film 'Repo Men' (B-grade sci-fi film, set in dystopian future where artificial organ recipients who miss repayments have said organs re-possessed by 'Repo Men'). The protagonists get around in tough-looking Touaregs that slightly resemble yours.

They are Subaru fog lights , well sold as but apparently their the wrong size , they were unwanted from a friend. I built an alloy u bracket that mounts to one of the m10 bolts in behind the grill next to the factory fogs. They pack a good punch and really light the foreground.

Hows it go on juice when you're off road? And I've forgotten, auto or manual?
alex g
09-01-2013, 03:04 PM
It was super thirsty on the sand , as its always working, especially with the muddies. But in the bush it just coasts along and is pretty good on the juice. It's auto, manual trannies are super rare if available at all in Australia. To be honest it's that smarter system I love the auto. Seems to really scence what your doing and wanting re gear changes and holding gears.

Just read through all 16 pages of this thread!
Much respect for you Alex. Not only because of how good the car looks and how functional it is, but the fact that you did all the work yourself including most of the fab work.
I assume youre a welder by trade??
Im in the market for a Touareg at the moment for the "Missus" as well.. LOL... After reading through your build thread, you can pretty much say all of my pre-conceptions of this being a true offroad machine are GONE!
Would you consider re-fabbing any of those mods you made for $$$$?
I espescially like the "home made" lift kit! BRILLIANT!

WOW! :eek2: What a great job you've done with your new toy mate!:toocool::punk:
Good to see you've already found the Club Touareg forums - they seemed to have some really nice guys on there and organise some good outings which your Treg is MORE than ready to tackle! What they do/did was a little too ambitious for my little Tiguan.
Just a few questions:
1) Loving the extra lift you've got with the spring spacers, tyres, etc. Just wondering, what has the effect been on drive shaft angles and are you concerned about extra wear on (CV?) joints as a result of the extra lift? The guy in South Africa that made spring spacers for the Tiguan reckoned it wasn't worth going more than 35mm-40mm higher as the stress and wear would be too great.
2) From the vids I've seen of you playing in water/mud I see you're willing to do some wading. Also, by fitting snorkles it looks like you're hoping on going deep - have you done anything as far as diff/gearbox breathers? I don't know what the Treg wading depth is, but I'm assuming it is more limited by the diff/gearbox breathers than the air intake. If you haven't looked into it is it something you reckon is worth considering?
3) The bash plate you made for my Tig is great, but your one for the Treg looks to be in another class! Did you notice much difference in the noise in the cabin after fitting the plate? At first I didn't with the one you made for me, but after a couple of months I suddenly noticed a distinct resonating sound in the cabin. I made a plan fitting some rubber dampers each side of the plate at each of the mounting bolts and that helped a bit. Just wondering whether there's a similar issue with the Treg.
Otherwise I am green with envy - you have a beautiful vehicle there! I love that you've moved to lifting your vehicles now rather than slamming them :P

Yer it's a slippery slope in more ways than one.
I still have to fit the Seikel suspension I bought which I'm going to combine withe some spacers to give around 3" of lift. Currently I'm up about 2" and have had no problems with the drive shaft angles.
It's gonna be close with the new setup.
I have mocked it up and it's not to crazy.
It should end up about 25mm above full height on air assist touareg but offer much more down travel and articulation than an aired system.
I have had water over the bonnet and on removal of the air box's show some water coming in.
Having two air box's I think helps a lot here as you would have to fill both box's to suck any water up.
And being petrol it's a little less sensitive.
Factory wading depth on steel suspension is 500mm.
The diff breathers are pretty good , the front mounts up near the headlight on the rhs air box actually and the rear is hidden up in the ar well with the fuel filler and breather.
Will be a nice piece of mind with the snorkels though.
I haven't noticed anything noise wise with the underbelly protection.
In your caseit might be a bit of ressinance from a loose bolt , could be worth checking everything is tight.
Going to get the missus another one and go to town on this one. Can't wait.
Give us a yell if you want to catch up Dean. Even come for a run , I will be gentle on you.

How'd does your t'reg compare to the 80, height and clearance wise?
alex g
09-09-2013, 08:08 PM
The 80's got 35's so it has a bit more clearance but the treg was actually quite well matched to it.
Really pointed out how well the treg's central locker and limited differentials work. The 80 has a Lokka rear diff locker fitted.
