It was announced at Warwick that the drag weekend held in February at Portland is cancelled to be replaced by an event at WSID on the 25th February. Details are sketchy at the moment but it looks like it will involve possible night drags, a dyno competition and camping at the track as well as the usual show and shine. This is a feeler thread and Craig will post details as they come to hand. I am excited about having a local event in Sydney that will hopefully have the same fun and welcoming atmosphere yet competitive and exciting as both Portland and Warwick.

Im in (as usual) . I think Im one of very few dedicated watercooled drag racers in Australia . Portland was always a good event that I enjoyed driving to and prepping the car for not only a long distance drive but also racing for the weekend . With WSID being much closer I'll be able to run a car myself . Hoping to get my VR6T done and also the R32 race car as well . I just hope local tuners will show up with cars as well . Its all well and good going on a Wed night and bragging about what time you ran , but lets see how good you are in competition !
Since this is a new type of event , what do people want from a show/shine/drag day ? Should we model it around events like waterfest
Waterfest 2011 VW/Audi Car Show in Englishtown, NJ - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGOvRKxTKDY)
or
A german race wars style event ? :
German Race Wars 2009 Season Open Impressionen - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l273i-UXfFE&feature=watch_response)
Id love an event like how the Swedes/Norwegian/Finish Vag tuners put on , but I think its even too wild for us !:

Yes, confirmed. Announced at Warwick, full details in the next issue of VWMA. VWMA website to be updated with programme, activities, prices, etc mid November.
Warwick and Portland have always been a bit for for me to travel to but WSID is only 45 minutes away.
I wonder how fast my Cordoba GLX can go? :)

Where is this normally held guys?
Just a thought, this will be a genuine 1/4 mile drag, unlike Warwick and Portland that are only over the 1/8 mile.
Woo Hoo!
Where is this normally held guys?
AFAIK, first time at WSID at Eastern Creek, replacing Portland in western Victoria.

Why not , a lot of people are curious how the new vans rate compared to the old ones , you wont be the only van there and you wont have the slowest car either !

Hi All,
I hope race preparations are going to plan (finish the night before and hope it stays together?!).
Pre-paid driver and crew tickets will be issued at the gate when you arrive. There will be a register of names to also confirm who has paid. It is important when you send in your entry to include the full name of every person being paid for. Sydney track officials look after the gate and I may not be there to resolve any extra ticketing requirements.
Volkswagen Genuine Parts have again put together some nice driver bags with VGA goodies and you can collect these from the VWMA tent once you are inside.
On Friday night we have the VW Pizza evening at Dino's Pizza (check the website for full details). Centre Management have kindly allowed the first 30 VWs to arrive for the night the opportunity to park in the shopping mall. There is a waiver to sign that exempts Centre Management from any damage to your vehicle, but Dean has had many a car show there with no incidents. The evening starts at 7pm and goes through until 10pm. Spot raffles and prizes will be given away through the night.
The RC PDNR Drag Racing club will be conducting a round of their championship during the Saturday event, and will also be hosting the VW RC racing around 6-7pm. The club has graciously allowed the use of their high tech track equipment to run the VW RCs. Worth a look at what the PDNR club members have built to go scaled down racing.
Remember it is BYO food and drink on Saturday evening, but the track caterer will stay open until 8.30pm to serve food for those not quite prepared to cook their own. Food and drink are available for purchase right throughout the day.
NB: in case the weather looks nasty for the Saturday, a decision will be made on the Wednesday 22nd February to cancel. All competitors will be contacted by email and text by 5pm that day. If you hear nothing by this time then the event will run as planned.
Please check the VWMA website for further info and details about the racing, and remember entries close Friday 17th February.
See you on the track.
Cheers

Hi All,
Entries close this Friday 17th February 2012. If only for my sanity, don't leave it to the last minute if you intend competing. I encourage anyone considering racing to do so, as the VW scene has been given an excellent opportunity to have their own day on the quarter and it should be grasped with both hands. Track days at Sydney are a precious commodity so please make the most of it in 2012 - don't wait for next year.
The format for racing will be the same as in 2011, with the four classes - Aircooled, Watercooled, VW Bodied and VW Special - competing in a round robin dial your own competition. The Top VW Shootout is open to all vehicles from the four classes who run an 11.85 or better for the quarter. The 11.85 cut-off is quick, but fair given some of the times being run by the VW regulars on the quarter. It's also not too far away from those who are aiming to go even faster at Sydney.
A reminder to check the website for racing requirements and driver apparel, and please be mindful of the ET brackets - I would not like to see anyone go home early because they did not take note of the information.
There will be one more update next week, and as I mentioned before, a notice to cancel should the weather forecast look grim, will be made by text and email on Wednesday 22nd February at 5pm.
See you on the track
Cheers

The problem with the weather is its so sudden. It comes over quickly, rains hard for an hour or two then becomes sunny again. Its really tropical type weather.
I havent entered yet, waiting for Seb to confirm which car he will be taking
11.85 a time Id love to get :)

So out of 80 odd cars there are only 16 watercooled entrants and of those there are 6 R's. Bit of a poor showing from the watercooled people. This is meant to be a fun way to see where your money has gone on all those performance mods you've done. You may even learn something about getting your car off the line in a quick controlled way. Where are all of the "I'm glad I chose a GTI over an R" ladies? Not only did you save money on the initial purchase you're constantly saving on fuel so surely there is enough in the kitty to spend a day at the drags. For crying out loud someone has entered a TDI Touareg.

I suppose it is. I just get sick of the bench racers who throw in their opinion but aren't able/prepared to back it up. It applies to the dyno days as well.
There will be at least 5 of us together on Saturday (all R's) so feel free to come and hang with us.

I am not sure about Saturday... I was going to drive up to Bathurst to watch the early Qualifying for the 12 hour... I still might do that and then be back for all the action at Eastern Creek later in the day.
I wonder if there will be any other Scirocco R's there tomorrow night?

thanks man! nah it was with the current engine - 1.8 with twin dells...the other engine should be in next month...should mention i didnt have time to put my better dunlop's on the front and had to run with my crappy kuhmo's which resulted in a fair bit of wheel spin even into third :D although they were better for the skids ahah
