Hello all!

So, after buying a brand new TDI i stupidly sold it after a year and a half to buy a mini convertible and after having that for 6 months i have been drawn back to Polos and i am buying a GTI on thursday!!!!!!!

YAAAAAAAAAY

Just wondering, when i look at buying a second hand car what faults should i be looking for in polo gti's? if any!

And what mods can i do to it?! and what have you guys got yours insured for?

I am very excited! Thursday this baby will be mine!

Check out the faults thread, lots of details. Stick with the latest model you can afford. Some of the 06 models had some gearbox issues, but seem to have occurred early in life and under warranty. Bear in mind the major service and when that's due. Can be expensive if using a dealer to complete it.

Most issues are general wear and tear rather than mechanical failures. e.g. control arm bushes are soft so wear out.

Plenty of mods available, how deep is your wallet and where to start... Start reading everything on the first page of the polo forum, you'll likely have answers to everything you've ever wanted or need to know about them.

Goddamn that's a good price, very jealous!

I told myself I wouldn't do many mods, chip+downpipe+rims+tyres+intake+coilovers+lower lip+countless other trinkety bits later and it's a pretty unique polo.
The bug bites, hard.

Get some pics of that bad boy online ASAP!

is this the silver one?

if so i saw it 4 weeks ago. needed 4 new tyres a wheel alignment and had a dent on the roof. offered her 15.5k for it she said she wanted 16k as minimum.....looks like no more interest and 4 weeks changed her mind. its not a bad buy because the kms are low.

I was tossing up between this one and the one I bought because she wouldn't drop to 15.5k. I picked up an 08 gti with sunroof for 15k with 51kms on the clock. Never looked back.

just noticed that the cheapest 08 on carsales in NSW is 19.5k. maybe i should list mine at 18? nah I like it too much.

Good luck with your car hunt. and don't be affraid to walk away. its a buyers market and seller have to know that.

Yeah its that one!

The reason why shes letting it go for 15 is cause the wheels and wheel alignment which will only cost me $500 max!

Are they run flat tyres though?

Its a nice little car huh! Very clean! Other then those problems did you notice anything else?

I didnt notice the ding on the roof =| im getting an inspection done on it on thursday!

mine needed rego. so all up i paid 16k for a very tidy car with recently replaced brakes and which cost the owner around $1200. and 2 new tyres.

the silver car is very good for 15k, like i said, i offered her 15.5k 4 weeks ago.

the dent is above the rear roof spoiler. It drove fine aside from the pulling to the left (i think from memory) which the wheel alignment should sort out. the dent is also a fairly easy fix. tyres should cost round $600 for some good ones, no they are not run flat tyres lol.

wheels had a few scratches but then it was owned by a chick :p

if you can get it for 15k its a good buy.

cheers

Use photobucket.com, it's free and easy. Upload your photos on that site and use the direct URL to copy into the 'insert picture' feature in the posting option on this forum.

Tune the polo and you'll never suggest the TDi has more oomph :)

With regards to pulling to the left, could be alignment, could be the tyres. My continentals 'developed' this trait and was resovled by replacing. By 'developed' I mean from track days I basically wrecked the internals of the tyres to the point where the internals eventually let go and turned the tyre a funny shape - no safe for driving.

But getting a mechanical check is a wise move.

How much does it cost?!

Oh no! Photobucket is blocked by work i cant upload it :(

Tunes are between about 750 and 1250 depending who you go to.

Best bang-for-buck performance mod you can do.
If you want to keep your job, stay away from the search button on this forum and jump online when you're home lol.
Many hours of trawling awaits you.
The tune, or 'chip' as it's commonly referred to, is essentially a modification of your cars computer so as the engine performs at a greater level.
Whatever you do though, don't start a 'what chip is better?' thread lol

Hahaha i dont have the patience to go through it all, so making a thread is something i would have done haha

Are chips illegal?

Nope, not illegal and won't typically void a new car warranty (not that that is of concern in this case). It changes fuel and air mixtures, timing and boost. But IMO, wait till you have the car and while and see if you want more power and increased fuel consumption. With my mods I'm using 1.5-2l more per 100kms and very likely going through front tyres quicker, it's a lot more fun so worth the cost to me.

My S3 will do 800 on a tank and average less than 9 around town, that's chipped and produces a fair bit more than a Polo GTI. Consumption shouldn't be that much worse than standard, depending how you drive.

Front tyres will take a hit if you are setting off from lights all the time and giving it even a tiny bit of boot.

I feel your pain, being a TDI owner all my life - the GTI feels sooooo slow.

good girl - sure, minis have their merits, but god damn i cant stand the sight of them anymore... waaaaaaaaaaaay too many on the road, to the point that they're not anything unique or special IMO.

I might need some driving lessons from you Gav. It goes really well but fuel consumption has increased much more than expected, even when puttering around gently.

I would be inclined to spend a little more than 450 on your tyres. That's one thing I wouldn't be cutting corners on. Safety is paramount!

Yeah... You only buy cheap tyres once!!

There is so much you can do to your Polo, it's unbelievable!! My Polo GTI went from looking like this:

Over the nearly four years I have owned it.

There are plenty of threads in the Polo section that can help you out with what you would like to do to your car.

i love the lower lip / bonnet bra combo. definitely adds its own sort of character.

as for tyres, yes.... saving money on tyres also means lower grip, lower responsiveness, longer braking distances etc etc.

tyres are something that you shouldnt cheap out on. they may save your life (tyres were a factor in me being able to avoid a big fcking kangaroo on the way back from perisher this year).

You can get a set of KU31's for 500 or less in Syd. Good rubber for the price, but I've not tried much else, just went on reviews vs cost.
