On the way to work today I saw six MK1's.
Mine (unregistered)
Red 4 door on someone's driveway (registered)
5 k's further down the road a white 4 door on the street (registered)
Another 2 k's and a red 4 door, white 4 door and white cab (all unregistered) parked on a front lawn and in the driveway.
I know you've probably seen more at a show or the wreckers but all these were during my drive to work. Is this a record?

Doesn't count. My record is for random sightings (apart from mine). If you want the record for most in a backyard then contact Nick from Canberra Volksparts. He's got 400 acres at Bungendore with over 70 MK1 Golfs.

in my picture, all of the golfs bar the 2 with tarps on them were driven there that day, and they all belonged to my family (the one with missing tailights was getting ready for a respray).
Also, there's 6 in the picture (although not much of one is visible)
dads beige gld (foreground)
sisters beige resprayed to orange LS
brothers white gld under tarp
my white LS
my blue GLD under tarp
my gandads beige GLD (top of A pillar visible)
the slightly golf looking bootlid corner in the right of shot is actually a merc 240D

That is such a shame... I mean give me some and I will look after them better...
Tuck them into bed each night and read them bed time stories... I may fondle them a bit though!

Don't get too excited, there's a lot of rust out there. The best 2 door shell there had a rusty sill on the drivers side but apart from that looked good.

I took that photo in Feb 2005... I wonder how many are left now.
I'd love to go back out there for a squiz again, esp now that I have a Mk1. Last time I was there (also 2005) I was fitting an exhaust to my MINI (http://27772.smugmug.com/MINI/Milltek-cat-back-install/3479443_SynBK#31971376_x4tkA) (since sold).

Nick says he's still got over 70 MK1 Golfs and that's after he sold a few to the Poms. Last shipment they didn't like because they found a few redbacks which scared the crap out of them.

if volksparts are kind enough, it'd be nice to have a field trip out to the farm :)

It's just out of Bungendore but Nick is pretty protective of his place. The only reason I got in is a mate of mine was working for Nick. I suggested he opens the gate one Saturday and charge everyone $20 to go in but he laughed.
