Yep, this is one i've had under the covers for 18 months or so...
http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2010/01/DSCN3634-1.jpg

The plan is simple.
- Strip & rebuild from ground up (long term)
- Nice Aussie flavoured retro rims/whitewalls??
- LOWERED!!!!
- Venetians etc
- Basic engine swap from 1100 to 1.8 8v

Yes, i'm mad:twitch2:

Was just looking at all the odd old rims they had. There was even an old 14" ATS cup there all on its lonesome!

I'm thinking banded/widened G60 steelies or mk1 steelies too...

yea, but i'll have to warm to the idea of 13" rims before i seriously consider those.
I found some sweet Simmons' om ebay but they dont look like real aussie made ones...

the red centered ones are great,

I would keep the 1100 if it was still running, unique goodness and those crossflow engines are a bit more good looking in my opinion!

The red centered wheels look like old Opel wheels, and the first ones look like really early BBS E50's. Most of those would look good on the MK1 i think!

I love that blue, keep it?

Yeah keeping the blue Jace. Its a really nice colour and not very common.

The 1100 engine was stuffed, and impossible parts-wise. Its long gone now anyway and is probably in your pantry containg tomato soup.

I actually saw some Simmons V4 rims on ebay that were refurbished with the centres in the same blue as the car. Unfortunately i didnt have the $1200 he was asking...

As soon as I can sell the race car project/shell the sooner i can start with this.

Haha, no. I would love to be able to just collect every car that comes up but i don't own an aircraft hangar unfortunatley.
I was keen on that super 90 but was relying on the participation of others to take the red 75L. Wabit seemed keen but vanished from existence when i tried to contact him, and the other interested party fell thru unfortunately, so both cars are still sitting out in the hills...

Ok, so i finally got all my crap sorted at the new house and this car has a new home under a gazebo in the driveway (no garage :()
Been gradually pulling the car down and finding rust, making a list of bits to get etc.

A few goodies arrived... and some engine parts from work.
I'm using the old EV/SD engine from my Grey '86 mk2 GTI that i had saved from that misadventure.
The EV is of course the 8valve "big valve" head (with mild cam), and the SD bottom end is the 1.9 from an Audi 80. Good times.

sIIIIIIIIIIIck!!
Anyway yea Byron i'm pretty pumped to see it take shape. I think this will be my last serious resto as its a long, slow, frustrating and expensive road.

I made a little job list with the help of Guru Grant:

1. Light blasting/wire wheel at home to expose the bad bits clearer
2. Cut out rot
3. Weld in replacement bodywork
4. Take down to Diamond Blast and blast the whole body & panels
5. Bring home, blow/suck out blast media, apply phosphate to metal
6. Apply Dinitrol rust converter in tricky box sections
7. 2pak epoxy primer
8. Cover up, and save $$$$ for final painting!

In the meantime:

Rebuild EV/SD engine and k-jet bits.

Hmmm, jeez thats looking scary!!

Yea. Not sure on how much the phosphate and epoxy is, but diamond blast quoted $1700 for blasting the body & panels, plus $300 for epoxy primer.

Final paint would be around the $5 - $6k mark...

Interior retrim will run into the $2000 mark and a dash rebuild was quoted at $600 from the dash doctor in Melbourne.

I still have to buy all the parts too!!!

Put in a big effort this weekend. Chopped up the 1/2 GTI that Grant had and hired a ute to get the sections home.
Then i set about the butchering process.
There is a lot of rust in some really annoying nooks & crannies. Its going to be a tricky repair process :(

IF you've got that much skill, commitment and motivation to pull this off (and I'm not doubting you do)
you DESERVE a way better shell than this to work on!
the time saved body work can be spent on
maybe a mid mounted engine the options are endless and a lot more fun i would think as it is a dreadfully long road to go down before you get to high filling and painting at which point you still only have a ((patched up golf))
Were all seriously admiring your effort that for sure! Good Luck !

hey mate, i was sort of thinking the same thing? i'm sure you could find a better condition shell which doesn't need to be cut into 100 pieces? as mentioned above, takes a lot of effort/skill/commitment to pull off what you're doing.

Haha. I'm looking at how hard it'll be parts-wise. They're out there, but you have to look very far and wide.

An engine convo would be brilliant, but i dont think i can go thru that again. Maybe just chuck something common in there like a B5 Passat/A4 1.8T... or an A6 V8:emo_baghead:

Only if i cant rebuild the stock donk though.

06-04-2012, 09:26 PM
Well i think my decision is made.
The Golf is at the point now where the more i remove, the more problems i discover. I'd basically have to cut 40% of the original body away!!! Might as well use another/better chassis. I cut out some of the a-pillar lower section and down where it joins the inner guard just to see the extent of the rust, and it just crumbled off :( Its a real bastard of a spot to repair there, and with this Audi super90 dangling in front of me I've realised i dont have the will to do it now.

So, another mk1 project failure!!!

Sorry to disappoint you guys. Hopefully i can make it up with this Audi. If that fails, its Go Kart time!!!

I think everyone expected this car to go to the tip a lot earlier in its life. Very impressed you even took on this build!!
Oh well, things change.. Get on that Audi!!!

Nah, its over. Dont have the energy for a project anymore. Not for a while anyway.

Its a shame coz its a beautiful old car and looks like it'd be ok, but it will require getting everything from non-english speaking countries.

I'll get back to the mk2, organise my wedding, then buy a Rotax 125cc TAG Go Kart...

Buy yourself a Leopard, not a Rotax. :)

Yea was going to go with the leopard but the rotax is a lot more common over here and it'll be good to start out with something more universal for the time being.

There's not really much difference anyway these days.
