This coming summer i'm planning on swapping out my 1.6l 8v to a larger 1.8l or 2.0l 8v. The car is just going to be my daily driver and am after reliability more than power. So between now and summer im trying to hunt down a good condition 8v engine. My original plan was to get a AGG engine and run it on a 32/36 carb, However after some reading I think I might do it properly and take the fuel injection system from the Mk3 GTI 8v and run that.

This engine will be going in a 1975 Passat TS so I am aware that I need to make 1 of the engine mounts.

Just after some advice on what you guys think about the AGG motor or if you recommend going 1.8l over 2.0l since i've read that some people prefer it more.

Also if there is a detailed write up of a similar fuel injection conversion with a 2.0l 8v motor into a Mk1 golf or Passat that someone knows off. (I've searched this forum but have been unsuccessful)

Huss,
If you want to swap over the whole fuel injection loom then you'd just about be better off to buy a cheap seat cordoba or mk3 golf and take the entire wiring loom and engine out and swap the lot over.

otherwise look for any 8V thats to your liking and just run the 32/36 carb on it. You should be able to mount up just about any of the 8V engines with the existing brackets that you have on your 1.6

for the money to do the swap over to a later 8v petrol with the loom, I wouldnt bother - i'd be looking for a 1.9 diesel to put in there instead (with a turbo) - but thats just me.

I've moved this to the "conversions" forum for you aswell.

So are there any particular high compression 8v engine models which are better than other models, I just figured an AGG would be a good engine to swap since it came out of the Mk3 GTI models.

Specs for the AGG motor look good

Here's a few specs for 1.8 motors

trouble is most of them aren't particularly available.

The ADZ, RV and GX 1.8's are common, and the 2E and ADY are locally fairly available aswell, but a lot of the other ones are euro-spec. I have an EV in my garage just sitting there with some k-jet bits on it.

Not many mk3 GTI's (if any) in australia... I've heard of 1.

The ABS 1.8L is great, slap a weber 32/36, set of extractors, electric distributor, and a mild cam and it will hold its own on many newer cars up to 100kay, if not more.

I had a 1.8L with a weber, 276 cam, and extractors. and i have to say it was quicker then a 2E 2L with extractors and cold air intake.
The 2E had better torque but when the cam came on song in the 1.8 it would rev clean off the stock tacho and into the fuel gauge. :D redline in 2nd was 100kays with a 4 speed diesel box.

Hey guys I'm just in a predicament at the moment. I've got a 4speed diesel gear box and I just brought a 1.8l 8 vale engine block, im about to replace the clutch before Assembling them together, is there a specific clutch I need to install or just a standard NA clutch.

any clutch you have that fits will work fine.

Just wondering what diesels you are talking about here and what they come out of. I have been having evil thoughts able a 1.9 diesel conversion but they dont seem to be readily available. definitely not to the extent that they are in America.
