i do remember it had audi front and rear seat , rears with head rests and very nice interier , very sure its a kr , sport springs , mk2 gti brakes ect.... not sure of the gearbox , yes 5 speed , but varient not sure of ... will keep all posted soon , shane

Congrats man. I got a 4dr mk1 GLS 1.6L carby the other day. The guy said it was a 1.8L but rego papers say otherwise. Is there a good website that shows the differences between each engine and how to tell the difference?

Have a look at the top radiator pipe where it goes into the head. On a 1.6 it's between 1st and 2nd cylinders (counting from the front of the engine). On a 1.8 it's between 2nd and 3rd.

yeah, radiator hose goes between the 1st and 2nd cylinder, counting from the left when looking from front on.

spewing, missed out on 200cc lol doesnt matter, i'm going to change the engine anyways..

4 hours up, 2 hours back. Shouldn't be any problems (but carry a tool kit, fan belt, spare plugs, dizzy cap, radiator repair kit and lots of Wagon Wheels or Tim Tams).

Can't do a long drive without chocky biscuits.

And congrats on the find. 16v in a MK1 is such a sweet ride.

Around 15/40 or 20/50 would be fine.

NGK BK7EKU Spark Plugs. Not easy to find, but let me know if you need some. I have a new set on the shelf.

Let me know if you need more info dude. :)

Nahhhhh, just joking. You should be able to fix anything on a MK1 with chewing gum, bailing wire, 100mph tape and a swiss army knife.

20W50 is what you want.

Make sure the oil to water cooler is not leaking internally. I am not sure how often Frank has run this car but the cooler ended up leaking some time ago ( water in the oil etc) From memory Frank changed the cooler and flushed the engine oilways and cooling system.

As long as the basics are right you will get home fine.

It'll be fine without it, mate.

I'd go for a Mocal oil cooler kit if you feel you need one. PM me if you're interested.

what would be a sufficient radiater for a kr 16v ? im thinking of getting a spare , would the mk1 be limited for space or should i just stick with a mk2 radiater ??

Stick with what's in it now, mate. That's the easiest thing to do. :)

I agree with sticking to the origional if you can, I am running the same engine in my mk1 but I have two 45 webers so I am using a Pug206 radiator, it's a little thinner so it gives the carbs more room to breathe.

Update? How did the drive back go?

the drive back was no problem at all except i only had low beam headlights :P and was dodging many big kangaroos for three hours , but made it back without any meet ups with enexpected wildlife !!!!
As for the golf , it was a blast !!! i remember seeing the car ovr a year ago , but going down to buy it i couldnt remember much of it , but once i was down there , it was pure class , no oil leaks no coolent usage on the way home , the heater was working nice !!
Found out it had central locking and aircon !!! working mint ... a list ......

momo steering wheel
mk2 gti 16v kr
mk2 gti gearbox very close ratio 4th and 5th gear feel the same...
mk2 gti brakes discs rear
series 1 tacho cluster
new carpets reupholsted interier feels new and looks new
14 inch wheels (195 50 14) rear front (185 55 14) bit easier to turn
2 1/2 inch exhaust
sitting on yellow koni lowering springs

lots more that i cant think of yet....

also have pics when it was stipped to bare metal and resprayed , tho that was in 1996 so it will need another coat of paint soon as its starting to crack on the roof and bonnet , mettalic charcol colour , needing some rust cut out on the rear boot lid and at the bottom of the front window (usual place )...

will post some pics up over the weekend , had not had access to my laptop for a while !

very happy with the performance :P fastest golf i have owned. all it needs is a good tune up ect.....

after work on friday i decided to get a quote for a respray , $2500 for a full mettalic repray thats the rust cut out on the front bottem windscreen , or i was thinking of finding a wreck and cutting out that section ? the guy is stoked about doing a respray on these cars , 2 weeks in the shop  tho its just near my work shop , so gonna be easy to pull in and see how its getting along . will have to wait a month before he can fit me in and do a start , thats cool .... and yeah i went for a second quote , and this geezer says , what car is it !!!! i said a golf , and he says .. i dont think your car is worth getting a paint job and then he quoted me $6000 hahahaha, i drove off and took a short cut on his front lawn

did you bung on that breather hose I gave you yet ?? check to see if there is a restrictor in the small hole on the side outlet, you may need to take the one from the original hose ...

Looking good Shane :D
