Hey guys.

I haven't really posted much on these forums because i have been trying to find a second hand Polo GTI i like. Well the good news is i found it. Bought it today for $17000. It has 50,000Kms on the clock. It was just serviced with full service history and one owner. It is black and has leather seats and sunroof. Im stoked. I will be taking delivery of it sometime this week coming. But with that i must say a fond farwell to my WRX. Look forward to posting pics when i get it.

Going to mod it?

Yeah stoked with the find. Modding will commence one month after i get it. Wanna drive it for a bit standard first so i appreciate mods more. Thinking Exhaust, chip/tune and FMIC with all supporting mods. Looks to be a very fun six months ahead.

Yeh def drive it stock for a bit, I put 7000 on mine before modding, really appreciate the mods now.

A must is the chip, and PD160 intake, FMIC will only help you in warmer areas

Rear swaybar will help you get the post-chip power down.

Perth gets hot in summer so a FMIC would be good

Definatley get a RSB though. I have one fitted and my polo handles like a go kart

blitDz

Ok so i noted it in my list of things to do. Chip is probably first. Ill probabaly try and get FMIC before summer. Ill read up about the intake tonight. RSB sounds pretty straight forward. What about Strut brace for front. I know adding one of those to my wrx gave it a new lease on life when it came to cornering harder. Thanks guys for all the kind words. I been reading through the forums for a good hour before bed each night trying to get my head round everything.

Front strut brace is good, good addition to the RSB for grip, can't comment on it's impact with stock suspension.

I didn't find too much effect from the FSB on my Polo GTI when I had it.
Possibly abit keener to change direction, but don't know if that was me trying to find something.
It looks great, but don't know if it really does too much for it in terms of handling.

I got mine from forge motorsports uk website.

Oh also, alot of people did the diverter valve before/with the chip due to the higher boost.
I managed to get an APR R1 online for much much cheaper than what they sell it to you here. Don't recall where from.

I recently did a tune on my car (Superchips) after 2.5yrs of ownership, got the turbo intake pipe and diverter (both forge) done at the same time and very happy with the result. I'm running standard air intake at present and yet to be convinced I need to upgrade that.

I'm also running bilstein struts with H&R springs, and added a RSB when I did the tune, must say the car does feel more planted on bumpy roads with the RSB. I find the bilstein/H&R combo very good too, good ride quality and handles very well. My tyres are currently the let down.

APR R1 DV is often cheaper from the USA, I got mine through North American Motorsports (http://www.namotorsports.net/detail.cfm/part_cd/APDV100001) at the time they had an APR sale on and I ended up with it shipped for US$155. Arrived in 7 days from placing the order as well :)

Ok so i got a fair bit to think about in terms of mods. Most people seem to be getting chip before anything else. I would have thought that exhaust/tune would have been done together. The Polo has Potenza RE001 tyres on the front and some continentals on the back. Just to let you all know though ETA is one hour! Leaving work early to go pick it up.

flat6
01-08-2011, 05:33 PM
From all that i read, the exhaust mod does nothing more than add sound, the stock setup is actually fairly good

What benefits do you guys see from the APR R1 dv? worth the upgrade?

I concur about the exhaust. Apparently the stock exhaust is pretty good (Except the dump pipe)

I might be wrong, but from what I remember, the MY2008s had a different exhaust with only 1 resonator?
before that, there were 2?
It's been awhile since I have read about the pog though.

noone
01-08-2011, 08:48 PM
I think the dump pipe is limited in its benefits, but they are certainly there. A little more power, a throatier burble when the exhaust it warm, but not WRX'y... The cat is holding it back but they're not cheap to swap out, if you know someone with the tools / ability, a used one in good cond could be a cheap option.

As for the intake, I still remember the clear difference with the boost coming on in 1st gear, if you are not considering other intake options, its worth the spend in combination with a tune and decent diverter.

Many options, difficult to know where to spend it. I stated doing a writeup, trying to explain how it all came together on my car, you may find it helpful.

Enjoy (I think you might be doing that as I type)...

Have you tried replacing the stock tube with a pd160 or something larger?

The difference is night and day with the chip, even without you get a lot less jerk when dropping down and its more responsive.

You could also choose a GFB dv instead of the apr or forge. I preferred it over the forge dv :) Made a massive improvement on the polos drivability!

Thanks, that gives me food for thought as I have found the jerky-ness when shifting, just as the clutch is engaged.

MissVuks - can you advise of the difference in feel/performance between the two?

So i got it. First time in a while i actually drove to work. First time i have ever enjoyed it too. I got heaps of reading to do as well when i comes to the mods everyones suggesting. What about weight of car? Anyone done any simple weight reduction? Surely a new full exhaust would weigh less than the original.

Thanks Chuck ill keep in mind when i start to look at the upgrades. Will be nice to see the difference.

Noone - ill check out the writeup.

Thanks everyone again.

I am going to be fitting my own HID's from my own supplier as in the past i have had a few headaches with different brands. At the moment they will sit until my bulbs arrive. Once i had HIDS its hard to go back to standard. Cost about 400 i think it was. Worth it. Performance mods are coming when i save a little more. Plus waiting on my current insurance policy to run out so i can change company and add the mods to the next one. Saving and waiting game unfortunately. Not much point adding them to my current policy when theres 2 months left. Will definently try to make sure the adjustments will still work.

I also have these lights for my Polo GTI but haven't fitted them yet after seeing the maze of wires round the back! I'm a bit of an electrical retard so I'm going to take them to an Auto Electrician when I get round to it. What HID's are you going to fit? It says 'no HIDs' on the back of the lights so I was kinda put off the idea...

I recommend hooking the DRL's upto a battery though so you can see what they look like - looks epic! Will definitely get you excited about fitting them! =D

Forge dv was unpredictable when the car was boosting.. Sometimes it came on smooth other times it'd be jerky. GFB dv made it much smoother and consistent to drive.

Fair call. Personally the Ko4 and full exhaust are likely not the best way to go, but at least that way you know what to expect.
If you can't get a used k04, you would likely get better results from a different snail.

Gavin

noone
07-04-2012, 11:24 AM
Sure.

IMO a worked polo GTI is either,
- chipped, intake work, fmic, basic dump or dump and cat, good diverter, suspension, wheels and tyres.

Or

- k04 or better, same as above, injectors, fuel reg, full exhaust then there are plenty of options that can help. I'm hoping Plautos' car may one day be for sale, that thing is barely a Polo any more. Seeing his videos, overtaking some 'performance' cars is amazing.

The difference is in 2 key areas; getting more boost / air flow and how it's tuned. If you want good results either way, a good tune / tuner is the key (here's to you Gav). A k04 with a generic map is a waste IMO.

If you want to see crazy power, look to Badger's threads on the uk Cupra forums.

A good tune and supporting mods may cost around 1500 upwards, a good turbo and supporting mod upgrades is more like $5k. There are of course many ways to do this more cheaply, especially if you are a talented person or know someone who can help you out for beer or sex.

The reason I have not gone past my current setup is that traction is a real issue with a chipped and lightly worked Polo, with coil overs, bigger sway bars, wider stance, wider tyres. I have respect for the guys who have gone further, most of them have a real passion and like me, have spent hundreds of hours researching and filling in this section of the forum. We've looked to the old 1.8t's, cars that share the same basic build (seat supra) and other variants.

For me, after you have something like 135kw atw, the suspension becomes more relevant than squeezing out a few more kw.

I don't want to put anyone off, but if you want to do it with good results, you will benefit from;
- semi slicks
- good suspension
- custom tuning
- LSD
- sway bars, braces and as much stiffness as suits for maximum traction.

If you are going to do all that, it really needs a nice set of rims, a few unique bits of trim and it will be beloved by all of us and hopefully you.

Wow its been 4 months since an update. Geez.

Anyway here is a pic of me getting up my driveway with the coil overs I had fitted a few months back.

http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/7431/img1289hl.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/818/img1289hl.jpg/)

When I'm driving they aren't to rough but when I'm going slow they can be a bit hard. May get them loosened a little bit. I have to travel on Great Eastern HWY everyday over here so Perth people will know what that's like at the moment.

Ok so I got some rims for free off a mate and they were a little banged up but otherwise good. So I got them sand blasted.

http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/2557/img1402rh.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/687/img1402rh.jpg/)

And then I got the edges repaired. So now they are ready for paint. I will do this over the next weekend or so. At the moment I came down with the flu so I'm not doing anything.

On another note I just got the 65000km service done on Thursday and had the APR downpipe installed. I'm yet to do intake as I haven't decided 100% on what I want to do. I will be doing in the next few weeks at the same time as rims. I realise I should have done that first but things just turned out this way. This may be the last of the mods for this year as I have a competition going with a mate to save up 10k towards a house by the end of the year. So I better get saving. Already halfway but I don't want to fall behind.

That's all for now
