I've complied a list of VW approved oils that are sold in Australia to the best of my knowledge (see sticky in the Mk6 Golf forum (http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f112/why-you-need-use-504-507-oils-fsi-tsi-tdi-engines-47140.html)).

There are numerous VW standards for oil, with "504.00/507.00" being the latest standard to date. The brand wouldn't matter too much, since any oil that has been approved by VW would be made to the same standard, so I'd just get the cheapest out of the lot. Or if you wish to support a local manufacturer, buy Penrite Enviro+ 5W-30.

As for what's popular, well, I suspect most owners don't bother to buy or supply their own oil and probably use whatever the dealer uses. :???:

Ok so just to confirm anything that is 5w - 30 and is 504/507 is fine?

I've been using Q8Oils 5W/30 Long Life fully synthetic oil in my R36, which is an approved VW oil.

Yes, that's correct, since all 504/507 oils happen to be 5W-30.

Well I'll be - didn't know there was a Q8Oils distributor in Oz.

Added to list.

Actually, I get it from New Zealand from the distributor there.
