After the demise of the Team Green 16v 5 door MK1, the question was - where to now.

The green car was a real step for me. I had previously owned another 76' MK1, standard 5 door style with the 1.6 and 4 speed and I had really enjoyed it. Unfortunately there was a lot of rust in it and I offloaded it to purchase the green one. The green MK1 was built by Matt from Camden GTI and I purchased it from a guy in Brisbane. Over the past 2 years I have worked pretty tirelessly to bring this car up to my standard and personalise it as well. I learnt a lot about cars from a technical perspective and was a real enjoyment to get the skills out of working on it. It was used in TV series and commercials, and really was well liked - it did look fantastic.

So I was really not sure what to do after the car was damaged. Fix it, replace it, give up on MK1's - but in the end the Mrs said I should get another, so with that sort of support I decided to investigate.

In the end I have purchased a white 2 door '76 LS from Dan in WA. It was in the For Sale section for some time and no one had picked it up, I suppose the distance and cost was too much for many suitors to justify.

I have not had very much time to look at the car since it arrived on Friday, but will be taking it to get a NSW registration inspection on Tuesday. It is probably a bit futile, but while it is on the hoist I can have a proper gander on the undersides.

So welcome to the new MK1 chapter in our lives. We are going to take a number of parts from the green one to convert the white car to 16V, but other than that, the plans are still fairly wide open as to where this is going to end up.

Looks like a great base for the new Mk1 chapter.

Wheels, lower, 16V, exhuast, black interior, drive the nuts off it.

Welcome to the white 2-door mk1 club Mik! It was sad hearing about the 4-door, but I'm glad you decided to stick it out with the mk1's. I'm looking forward to seeing how this one turns out - I have no doubt its going to be even better!

But if I go 1.8t then I'd show Alex up and he hates it when that happens. ;)

I sure am motivated and have some exciting things that I bought for the green car that are new and have arrived in the last few weeks so am keen to get them into this car soon.

Left it out in the rain for 3 days to see where it leaks from into the interior. I always think it is best to find this sort of thing out before rather than later. :D

Thanks mate. I'd love to catch up with you before I go too far down the track as I have some questions about what you have done to your car. The only way to make things better is to get good advice along the way.

I don't think I have a 4th MK1 in me. Once this one is done with I am going to head back to restoring my Sunbeam Imp. :D

Been doing some shopping for the new girl - the parts pile is slowly coming together.

I really want this to be well planned and then executed quite promptly.

Rego inspection today, I am pretty sure it will fail due to a headlight conveniently being out - but I always find a simple fault makes things easier as they don't like passing old cars first up on Blue slips for the sake that they are old cars.

I'm concerned about rolling the guards cracking the paint. I'd rather not have to skim them.

Given LSs are painted in acrylic, they're a lot softer - you can heat the paint gently with a heat gun on low and roll the guards without trouble. GLSs in enamel are a different story, though :)

White is the best colour for a Mk1. Clean, pure, classic, and simple ;)

mikinoz
19-06-2011, 03:57 PM
It's had a respray of some type and thin the guards have some small amount of filler to make them neat.

I don't get much choice really, either I don't lower it or I risk it and if they crack I get them skimmed and blended.

195/50/15 is pretty close in rolling diameter to the 175/70/13 spec of the time (http://www.ausmotive.com/2009/10/25/volkswagen-golf-brochure-1980.html).

You had 175/70/13?We could only afford the skinny 165/70/13.I used to dream of fitting the wider tyres to my Golf back in the 70's. 175's, a fox tail aerial and fuzzy dice and you were king of the hill.

mikinoz

So my first maintenance required.

I put 20 litres in at the service station and went to the coffee shop, came back and smelt a lot of petrol in the air. Head under the car and the amount of petrol dripping from the engine bay was epic.

Turns out there was line on the fuel return, so I located it and put it back together and all seems well. While I was there I adjusted the accelerator linkage.

Pretty simple these 1.6 carby cars, I sort of miss the simplicity.

Sitting here I think I have nearly nutted my tyre situation out. Not done any real work to note.

ATS with 195/45 R15 for general beat about use (ie winter wheels)

BBS 6.5" Rims will have the rears widened to 7.5" in time for rear once the guards are flared and the math works out. Fronts I think should have 165/50/15 and then I am not so sure on the rears. 185 might be best (hard to find) or 195/45...

In other news, I ordered some chrome for the outside and some neato interior bits this week.

Jarred
23-06-2011, 05:38 PM
I'd go a 185/45 for the rear, 195 will be too large, espcially in comparison to the front, imo.

So I'm yet to decide. When I go 16v do I keep the S1 dash and splice into the original clocks, or, install a S2 dash with later model clocks?

Am not sure how hard the adaptation to the S1 clocks would be with the digi loom?

If you butcher a 76er with a late model dash, it's on like Donkey Kong, Mik.. :P

White 2-door with a mint black MK2 interior is how I would do it. Source some nice recaro thrones, black or grey carpet, MK2 dash, Wolfsburg GTI s/wheel and let the sack-explosions begin.

So Jace, what wheels should I run? :D

Jace
12-07-2011, 09:38 PM
Well that's what you get for not revealing what parts you've bought for it! :D

IMO, keep it real with a set of 15" MK2 Rocco steelies (still available new O/S), maybe widen them just to 7", paint black, maybe just standard silver. Dunno, the world is yours. :)

Post. The green was ok too, but this helped the car pop.

Good to see you're a proper 2dr convert, Mik. Four doors just don't look the same!

Love the style you're running with - timeless! And good one for not choosing RM/RSs like the thousands of other Mk1s doing the rounds :)

Thanks Stu. I'm pretty lucky I've come out with this after the green one, just massively grateful that I have a blank canvas. Taking on some great advice from the mk1 wizards, I should emerge with what I consider to be my jewel mk1.

But every mk1 needs a set of staged 7"/7.5"x15" RS for true authenticity. I'm planning on rebuilding mine to those specs.

The next step, the engine bay, will be the hardest as I was to do an uncompromising job but as time poor it means I may need to outsource the prep of that before I can drop in the new engine.

I agree they look awesome, but it's nice to break from the norm. Maybe RSs as the second wheel option is the ideal scenario :D

Looking forward to seeing the car evolve. Next nationals will be a great day for Mk1s in Oz :)

Not bad for something the same colour as a Toyota Land Cruiser. :P

Looks really good man. Nice pic too, John.

RS' are much the same as 2 doors. Everyone wants a 2 door or a set of RS' (or both). At the end of the day it comes down to what you want to do, whether it be break from "the norm" or not. I like 2 doors and I like RS'. But i don't have either and don't have any plans for them in the near future.. However that's not anything to do about what's cool, what's cliche and what isn't. It's just personal preference. :)

To be honest it is riding pretty well, and not a touch of scrubbage yet - so clearly that means it has to go lower! :D I might wait for ball joint extenders and work out what I am doing on the rears in terms of brakes and add the camber shims for more win.

The clutch has started to slip, so, well, you know what this might mean! ;)

And the final shot I have from Saturday here (again thanks John)

I think you've already mentioned it, but I think the front needs to drop a touch and the rear go up a touch (or some combination of that... the front looks higher than the rear atm). Also... unless there's some MK1 rule about having to have "era number plates" (read, ugly yellow ones, lol), you need to at least exchange that one for a more complimentary colour set :)

But I must say, I'm already jealous of where you're at Mik.

Due to the shape of the rear guards, when you have a level Mk1, the rears tuck more than the fronts. My GLD is almost level with the guards (back looks slightly lower) and it still has a little front rake.

You need to brush up on your maaaaad Mk1 skillz. :P

White on black number plates look nice.. I ran them on my white mk1 previously and so does Tim B. Very period. I was actually running KG-062 plates off my old man's Karmann. haha.

So I booked a trailer for the weekend to take the car to Canberra. Mainly as it was unfair for me to cruise down in the MK1 and the little lady driving the Multivan with 4 kids on her own.

I am interested in seeing how the Multivan goes on the KW V1's with a trailer!

Thanks for the props. The car really is something I am becoming more and more proud of. I was pushing to finish it for GAF, but found some rust in the floor that I wanted to replace with a new one and as soon as that came up I decided to hold off on fitting all of the good interior bits. But that being said, I have everything in place to complete the interior apart from a mint centre console and a refurbished heater box, but I am actually enjoying running the car without both.

I had a bit of a manic weekend to be honest. The story goes that the car was a tad low to get on the car trailer, the Multivan was probably a bit low to tow a car trailer (causing some damage to the van), and juggling some kids and the mrs really kept me entertained on the Sunday so socialising was a premium. I missed meeting about a million people after chasing/feeding/changing/appeasing the kids etc.

http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/4207/28755110150379674330520.jpg

There has been a bit of movement on the engine front, but not a heap. I have the rough plan now - pretty sure that ITB or Carbs may have to be fitted to set it off! It is hardly a daily drive for me.

So far we have managed to lower it on KW V1's, add superchips Bluefin, bolt up some X5 18" rims, Provent oil separator, and best of all shoehorn in a Touareg RNS510 with full MFD support, Audi LED style projector headlights with HID kit.
