VOLKSWAGEN Australia recently demonstrated the attributes of its 4Motion Kombi to representatives of the NSW and Queensland ambulance services.

The preferred weapon of choice for remote or outback ambulance work is the tried-and-true Toyota Landcruiser Troopcarrier.

It is a hard-working, go-anywhere vehicle, but it has shortcomings, including limited space and a less-than-supple ride.

Volkswagen's 4Motion has a feature that detects wheel slip on any or all four wheels and then locks them into drive on loose surfaces until traction is regained.

A Volkswagen Kombi fitted with 4Motion has a higher ride height than a conventionally driven Kombi. To further increase ride height and off-road capability, Volkswagen Australia had German specialist Peter Seikel tweak the suspension with selected Eibach coil springs.

The test vehicles were powered by 2.5-litre diesel engines rated at 128kW and manual transmissions.

Ambulance representatives present at the drive day -- on a purpose-built off-road course at Oran Park raceway in Sydney -- were impressed with the off-road capabilities of the Volkswagens.

Volkswagen Australia flew Seikel to Australia for the demonstration and had other off-road instructors on hand to help in experiencing all the 4Motion Kombi's attributes.
