View Full Version : RCD 510 + Reverse Camera. possible?
Hi guys,
I have trawled through this forum looking for a definitive answer, but have so far come up with zip. Hopefully this will benefit all who are looking for the definitive answer!
Once and for all, could someone please (one word answers are ok, more info would be nice though) confirm if you can indeed plug a reversing camera into the RCD 510 factory unit without too much (read, any if possible) modification to the unit?
Have found a website that sells VW specific reverse cameras that mount into the numberplate lights.
Cheers,
Gav

You need to code the car to say it has the camera, and this is all provided it has the reverse camera input on the back (a mustard coloured plug).
The RCD510 I just installed on mine has the plug, and thinks it has the camera. Comes up with a blue screen whenever I select reverse.
Definitive: Yes, if you have the camera input on the back. (I'll have a look through the menu / manual in a minute to see if there is an item that might indicate if there is an easy way to tell.
Care to share your source for the cam's (pm if preferred Gavs) - I'm after one too.
Al..
Thanks Al, much appreciated:)
I have to trawl through my favourites to find it..........

Thanks for the link Gavs - these are not "plug and play" with the RCD 510 as they use an RCA interface. Why would VW do something so sensible as including an industry standard interface
You would need a Kufatec interface (http://www.kufatec.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p1170_Rear-View-Camera----Universal--Interface----Audi-VW.html) to get that to talk to the RCD510. The image linked below shows the back of an RCD-510 with the mustard coloured plug for the RVC on the left (facing)

Al..
Ok, after a good year researching this, I have the answer. And, the answer is yes!
BUT, a specific interface is required that needs to be activated using VCDS or by the dealership to say that the camera is now installed so long as THE RCD 510 UNIT THAT IS HAVING THE CAMERA INSTALLED HAS THE CORRECT, 26 PIN PLUG ON THE REAR.
Rumor is that ever since the MY 11.5 update, that the RCD510 units all come with the 26 pin plug from the factory.

I have just installed an OEM dumb RVC (only has the static lines) in my Tiguan . I bought the nearly new rcd 510 Bosch head unit off eBay for $300 plus postage in february. VCDS software identified the unit was assembled in may 2011. The rcd 510 delphi unit made for the Chinese market, appears to have 2 versions of these units as well the later one is known as the RCd 510 plus+ and it has the camera socket and a usb output that supports an ipod i have seen it advertised on ebay for USD 500. I Had a few issues getting the camera to work as there are two versions of the RVC and each have different software activation procedures but very simple once you know how.
The basic OEM unit can be sourced off eBay from about usd280 upwards and the advanced unit for usd500 upwards as it has an extra box of tricks to generate your moving line into a parallel or perpendular parking spot so yes it can be done and I have a picture to prove it!!!!

May I ask if you have the pin config for the 26-pin Kulafec and the whole wiring diagram ?
I'm interested with the plate-lights-camera, which comes in yellow RCA-jack only.
Thanks

Not sure if the hole is the same size for the camera butt these have the 26 pin plug. very pricey though.
VW, Reverse camera, Tiguan, Caddy, Passat, Brand NEW, installation available | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VW-Reverse-camera-Tiguan-Caddy-Passat-Brand-NEW-installation-available-/180908554810?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a1efd7a3a)
im going to install the badge pop out RVC from the golf when my car turns up. Have measured them up and there the same size.
First off, are you 100% sure they are the same size? If so, then this is a change that must have happend in the mY12 update because prior to that, the polo one was smaller.

I do have the pin configuration and I might have the whole wiring diagram also, but you will need one of these (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/200697640585?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649) to convert the NTSC/PAL camera signal into RGB format, which you then need to activate through VCDS.

Hmmm.... My MY13 has a Bosch RCD510 and there is no 26 pin connector. Spewing actually because I really wanted to fit a camera.

That's a bummer. Good excuse to jump up to a RNS510:-)

Well it was just the rumour then or VW found a stash of the older units and started to fit them in the new cars (nothing wrong with that). As always, any info gained in the internet forums should be questioned as it very often comes from the sources that can't be verified.

For all I know the car may have shipped with an RNS510 and the unit was switched by the dealer so perhaps it is accurate. That's exactly why I pulled it out to check before spending $500 plus shipping on a camera.
Plenty of options depending on how keen I am for the RVC so not to worry. You win some and you lose some... I just seem to lose more often than win! ;-)
