Hi Guys,
I am just in the process of bringing my 2000 GTI up to the Fastidious level I like all my cars and get it to it's former glory. There are a number of things that I need to fix to make it perfect again.

I was hoping that anyone can either assist with information or point me in the right direction on getting these things done without paying through the nose or being ripped off.

1. Steering Wheel -Black Leather has worn off around the wheel. Centre panel is perfect, just the wheel itself is showing it's 7 year old 100,000k age. Want to either replace or even get the wheel redone.

2. Drivers side window with panel. Woodwork on the pannel has got cracks through it. Understand that there are different tones of the woodwork. Unfortunately looks like the whole thing has to be replaced.

3. Starter Motor - Grinds when starting particularly when cold. Tipping it's the bearings, wonder if this is a regular problem and what costs are involved in getting it replaced.

4. 1st Gear gearbox noise. Everyone I have spoken to and has seen the car, are surprised to hear it has a slight noise in first gear. Is not getting any worse but it is definately a gear problem, which can be clearly heard, which could eventually cause issues. Thinking of replacing with a second hand or getting a rebuild, which means $$. Spoke to Volkspower in Melb and they suggested I was better off getting a rebuild than second hander, interested to see if anyone has any other contacts or suggestions.

Surprisingly the car is in great condition, alot of the things highlighted may not be an issue to someone else, but being an enthusiast I like my cars perfect and these are the noticeable things I want to rectify.

Any suggestion or experiences with any of these issues would be appreciated.

Cheers
JB.:)

hey jaybee,

your best bet for the steering wheel is to either get a new gti one off ebay or upgrade to a r32 one like me,,
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VW-Golf-R32-original-Aluminum-DSG-shifter-paddels_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33703QQihZ019QQ itemZ8049936522
this one is expensive, but you can pick it up much cheaper if you have the patience.the airbag unit just goes onto this one.
as for the woodgrain, you can also upgrade to the r32 stuff here

fuzion was selling his woodgrain,,you can pm him.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

My main thing eating away at me is the gearbox. 1st gear is noisy, but again maybe not obvious to alot of people, but if you know what you are listening for any mechanic or Volks expert will pick it. It seems like the best option is a rebuild which I am being pointed to approx $2k - ouch.

Any suggestions or any contacts would be great.

Thanks again

Fairly sure its upwards of $5k for an entire gearbox.

If I were you I'd live with it until the gearbox died or really started showing signs of failure.

5k $ sounds very exxy. Just buy a GTI half cut damn it :) or maybe even a dog-box ;)

Hi guys, yes in Melb, eastern Suburbs. Have spoken to the guys at Volkspower as well as my Uncle at Race Brakes in Melb who do clutches gearboxes etc. There is definately an issue with 1st it's just noisy so something has happened inside. The things is it has been like that since I bought it (9 months ago) and has not got any worse. It's not affecting performance or gear change the box is actually fantastic.

I have been told by Volkspower that it may be fine and continue on as such or it may give up, it's just the risk you take. I'm not sure what to do, but the general consensus has been to repair the existing box rather than get a second hander which cannot be tested, and you don't know what condition it is in until you put it in.

Fuzion, happy to discuss with you if you are thinking of selling your box, PM me and we will get in touch.

I welcome any other comments or suggestions or people you may know that can assist. At the end of the day, the box is fine, I am just being pedantic, but then again are'nt all enthusiasts?

Is your Uncle's shop the one off Racecourse road ?

I would just leave it until the gearbox drops ;)

Yes, Raace Brakes in racecourse Rd.

Have had my fair share of performance cars, and he has always done all my brake & clutch work.

I think I will leave the box, however if the right opportunity comes up to change it then I will.
