i have to say, its copped a little bit of a beating with the ugly stick. Tyres are just too wide and too small a diameter to look right

Yep, that's what I'm saying. It looks crap and the steering would be laughably heavy.

Mk1s are known for good handling - why the hell throw 9" wide wheels on them unless they're for drag racing :roll:

Admittedly, I just bought 15x8s for mine, but they're show only. Anything over 7" wide on a Mk1 is crap - as is anything over 15" in diameter.

All my opinions of course, with which you're free to disagree :)

well i got 17'x8'' all round and my car handles like a go-kart, scares the **** out of me bacause it grips like anything, no understeer at all either

15s are the go believe me anything any bigger went out back in the nineties.
The odd Porsche 16 inch wheel with little 195 40s still pass.just
Most Brits ,Yanks and Europeans go for 15s and they are even going back to 15s on mk2s. 8) :( :(

but were not in those countries.... from this day forward 17'' wheels on a mk1 and mk2 is called "ozz look" there fore i have a "ozz look" vw :D anyone who wants to join me they can... because..... where do we live??? i think people should stop copying other countries looks and just do what you like! true? anyways Golf loon- no they dont rub mate... full carload on a massave bump.... yes they just touch the inner guards but no biggie...

Yeah mate, go the ozz look. I`m thinking my 15x6s on the Mk1 are looking too small. Australi has had loads of Golfs running round with chromies and cookie cutter small mags, whilst everywhere else went big wheels and plastic now its time for the reversal. I dont know if Australia is really far behind current trends, or far ahead.

I'm happy with my 15x7's i can get falken directionals for $80 a pop so to go up to 16's just costs me more on rubber. And that gets me up on 3 wheels now. Even though the bigger rims look good, its the ride that gets to me. Its bumpy enough as it is on 15's. I'd hate to feel it on 17's. Each to their own.

Yeah.. It often occurs to me when I see massive diameter rims shod with low profile tyres just how this affects comfort. I see Commodores that look like they've got pushbike tyres on them! When Dunlop invented pneumatic tryes the idea was to provide an air cushion and add comfort to boneshakers. I'd be interested to hear you comments (all) on the ride you get from large diameter rims shod with low profile tyres.

well i got a 40 profile and its a nice ride.. until the speedhumps hit ya as soon as you hit the first bit if the hump its rough then when your half way up and the back tires get to it theirs no worries... bumps and **** on the street has no affect on the car at all... the thing is with the 17'' wheels you have to choose the right style to match your car... and for mk1' and 2's its verry hard to choose the right ones.. anyways have your say all

I think the best size wheels are those that are the minimum size required to clear your desired brakes. Everything else is for show. I suppose it really comes down to the philosophy that is guiding the build up of your car. Personally, I think go is more important than show, but each to there own.... I am running et 20 15x 7 (195/45/15 Michelin pilot sports) now. The most forgiving and thrashable combo I have ever had was 205/60/13 (yoko 352,s) on 5.5 alloys. Have had 185/60/14 (yoko A008's) on 14x6), and 195/50/15 (yoko 539). Obviously, I like the yoko's. The main reason racecars have large wheels is to clear their massive brakes. My mate is running 205/40/16's at the moment on 16x7's and it seems to handle quite nicely. Woteva floats your boat i guess....

About the fuel tank, i remember someone years ago recomending taking it to a radiator place to get flushed. Might be worth a few phone calls Endless.
