Out of one tank, when does the fuel warning light come on for you guys? A bit under 500ks? Or under 600ks? Theoretically I've calculated that I should be able to get 600ks on one tank, but the needle hits zero and the warning light comes on at about 470ks.

heya,

i've got a 2004 golf gti and my warning light usually comes on around the 580-590km mark. i can usually push it to about 610km or a little more, depending how often you take it to the red line!

yeah so 470km doesn't sound right at all! am no expert so can't advice you on possible causes but would definately take it in to your workshop to have it checked out. let us know how it turns out! good luck!

The pogo's have a small tank, about 45L off the top of my head, but when the needle is on zero, you actually have about 5L reserve left in the tank (if you fill up, it will take about another 40L to fill up), so that extra 5L could theoretically give you another 50 odd km's.

I probably get about 450kms out of a tank :( my boyfriend isn't very nice to the car LOL

and if memory serves the golf has a 55L tank so thats 10L more to play with :D so getting 600ish sounds about right whilst the polo gets about 500ish

My first 2 fill ups i got 380 and 360, about 10.2 - 10.5 / 100 k's.

admittedly i was fanging around everywhere showing off the chip performance to everyone i could find.

120k's in and its running about 9.5 this fill up, with a little fanging... but i'm over the show off stage and i think 450 is going to be what i'll be hitting from now on.

Yeah i get between 410 -450 km a tank around town. On the open road though i got from Brisbane to Tamworth in a tank. So around 600km.

geezz... I only get 400 if that....and that's driving like a nanna! Trouble is, is that it takes me around 10 or so days to use a tank... the longest tip I do in a week is 12kms.

I found with a couple of mods (3" downpipe, chip, air intake) my fuel consumption actually went down!

I can easily get 650+ kms to a tank if I don't fang it around and my car is a little heavier than the polos! (Although my car has a 55L tank)

My first 2 full tanks I've squeezed 500+ k's out of it which i reckon is pretty good for a 1.8 ltr turbo in mainly city/freeway driving. Warning light always seems to come on about 70-80 k's from empty in mine..

I only get a couple hundred kms out of mine :D

but i only drive it on weekends, and i dont drive it particularly hard either:? (sometimes)

oh well must just be my driving style which makes it use alot of fuel.

DAMMM you guys..

How the hell do you get those numbers out of a tank.

The most I can remember I have ever got out of a tank , and that's almost running it to empty, was like 520ks.
But on almost every other occasion, I fill her up when the light comes on, and that at 350-380ish ks..

My fuel con is approx. 10ish, I can't drive it easy, but at the same time I don't drive it that hard all the time.
Please define HARD??

As my definition my be a little different to most of you.

As mentioned on this forum before - the 1.8T tends to drink a fair bit of fuel when cold (10+L/100km), and quite little when on the freeway (6-6.5L/100km).

If you do lots of shortish trips in the city, your consumption in the GTI is going to be a LOT higher than someone who commutes 30km on the freeway to work every day.

I suspect this might at least partially explain the big numbers some people get, but not others. If your car is a low km example (ie not run in, or barely run in), also expect higher numbers.

My average consumption has only recently dropped below 10L/100km (by the trip computer). It's dropping quite quickly though - i suspect it'll end up somewhere in the high 8s/low 9s, reflecting the mainly city-based driving I do.

My consumption has been an average of 8.5L/100km everytime I fill up.

:D I am averaging about 450 - 480kms. That's with everyday in and out of the city and light weekend work. If i trash some, i'm probably closer to 400kms.

NO WAYYY !!!

If I seen anything over 380 when the light turns on I'm STOKED !!!!.

I drive my car everyday to and from work and visiting customers around most of Sydney,so most of the driving is city..

I can't understand why the Consumption is over 10 almost all the time .....
like I said earlier, yes I do have a heavy foot, but I would have to say that it's less than 50% of the time that I do drive it hard, and when I say hard I mean a few big hits, but mainly short sqirts...

Surely this cannot contribute to such a high consumption, but funny enough, I have found that if I do drive it a little harder all the time every-time, the consump has been around the hight 8's/9's....

GO FIGUER!!!!.

Ohhh by the way my GTI is almost 9-months old with just over 10,000k's on the clock..

How much do you have the aircon on?

I think the explanation is that the fabled learning ECU, among other variables, establishes a long-term fuel trim, and I suspect this trim is different for leadfoots and lightfoots. My long term average consumption is 9.1L/100k :o

hahaha well don't feel too bad, I do 120km a day on the freeway and only get it down to 6.9L/100km. If I get a tail wind it goes down to 5.9L/100km.... wish I had a tail wind everyday.

Mind you, If:

a. Its a hot day
b. The highway goes over a lot of hills
c. The air-con is on
d. Driving into the wind

I get 11L/100km on the freeway :(

I just filled up this morning 40.5l's for $59.14 :(. I got 500km's out of the tank. I tired to run it almost dry as I did about 45kms with the fuel light on. I was surprised when I could only fit 40.5 litres in?? This is with APR which needs an update as its running too rich on boost.

Hey folks, I'm new here! A blue 2006 polo gti , bought 2nd hand with 22kkms on the clock, leather and sunroof - see interior pic below. Black would have been my preferred colour, but the blue is very nice as well. So if you see one with LFS (Live For Speed) and www.carbonneutral.com.au stickers wave hello :)

I fill it up every Tuesday with about 1/3rd left in the tank. Travelling from around Pascoe Vale road on the Citylink in Melbourne to Richmond with a bit of slow traffic on either end (and during...) I'll get 7.8-8.5 litres on the run in, depending on traffic, whereas using normal roads only on way home nets me around 9-9.5 litres. It only goes down at last third where I typically get little traffic, typically see around 11.5 until that time - and a lot higher for the first few kays.

Driving style is "smart spirited" i.e. a combo of leadfoot and being mindful of traffic patterns ahead, coasting to a red light etc.

Makes you think about how much better a hybrid car really is in the city. If the Civic had have ESP, I would have gotten the Civic hybrid instead. Really coming to love the polo so glad I didn't :)

Meh, Hybrids are a big waste of time.

Saves a little on exhaust gasses, saves a tiny bit of petrol (over say - a golf diesel) but do people realise how difficult it is to dispose of all the extra components - Especially the battery. I read somewhere the battery bank has a service life of ~3years and degrades overtime (So towards the end, you're running your petrol motor to charge much more often). That, ontop of actually trying to dispose of batteries would probably make hybrids produce more waste than an economic petrol/diesel small car.

Useless for anything but symbolism imo.

Welcome to VW Watercooled, funkdancer.

You're certainly brave putting a full bottle of Mount Franklin's finest in the dash-mounted cupholder!

Just looking at the pictures of your car, and the cold mornings we've had recently here in Sydney....I'm wondering whether I really should have spent the extra $2500 on the leather pack and seat warmers. But then again, I look at my car, and absolutely love the look of the Interlagos trim.

Looks like my Reflex Silver Polo is a bit of a rarity - everyone here seems to have Candy White, Shadow Blue or Red (can't remember the full name for the VW red). Which is a little odd, because every second Golf GTI I see is Reflex Silver.

Hey Funkdancer - if you don't mind me asking, what did you pay?

Funkdancer
10-06-2007, 06:23 PM
Thanks all :)

I paid $28k with 22kkms on the clock. This for a September 05 build date, delivered in December 05 (does this make it an 06? or is it an 05?), with leather and the small yet nice sunroof.

Nick condition except for just a couple of tiny chips here and there, which is as expected. Absolutely love the leather, to me it felt a lot better than the fabric - especially with the seat warmers in the morning. Also like the fact that the leather extends to the door trims etc, so got a completely different look.

Main family car is an Accord Euro Luxury 5AT 2005; this is a 2nd car to replace my GSXR600 after moving further away from work and having to get on the (pretty crazy) Citylink every day... just so happened I missed the horrific tunnel crash by a few minutes in March on the bike and that finally sold the getting a second car thing to the better half. As 1st is an auto, the 2nd had to be a stick. My bro had put an order in for a Polo TDI (Norwegian engine and feature nerfed version, still pretty good) and that made me look at the Polos. Had considered the Suzuki Swift Sport, but no ESP, so it was out. Am really coming to love the Polo. In Norway the same spec would have cost about 360 000 NOK, or $72k - go figure!

Just about everything is an extra on it there, our polos are incredibly well featured. The only thing they get above ours, as an option, are OEM reverse sensors and the full climate control box.

Sorry to go a bit off topic with this :)

Am not missing the bike [which is to be sold at some time, I guess.. :( ] anywhere as much as I thought I would, so am thinking the Polo was a great buy. Will try & get it properly APR'ed soon, maybe also get an air upgrade. It's a lease car, but am going to buy it at the end, so will just have to see how much I can get away with.

have had ours for 6 months and notice on the trip computer it averages around 7L/100k's...
did a trip to heathcote on the weekend and travelled 420km's with the needle still above the 1/4 mark.
i should get 600k's to a tank.
