Hi there. We just bought a 07 Multivan Highline Sports edition yesterday. Hooray. Very lovely. Today my partner clipped a sharp kerb with a wheel and popped a tyre. Whoops!. I took it to the tyre shop and they identified the tyre as a 245/50 x 18 on an original VW alloy. They quoted me a replacement tyre at $450. Gulp!!

The tyre dealer (Blairs Tyres) also expressed some surprise that there was this wheel on a Multivan and said why didn't I get a VW 16" or 17" alloy wheel since the tyres would be so much cheaper. And that did make some sense to me.

But before I go searching for some 2nd hand alloys or price new ones, I thought I'd ask the collective wisdom of you guys who no doubt know much more than me - a multivan newbie.

So any advice. Is the 18" rim and super-expensive tyres worth it and if so why?

Or what should I get instead?

IMO, it's not worth it.
The 16" will be the best for the range you can choose your tyre brand from and also for the longevity (you get more km's from 16"). I have 17" on my T5 and can't get more than 42,000km. Check the threads with the tyre topics.

Which wheels have you got on your Multi?
If you buy some new ones i might be interested in buying your 18s.

Is your Multivan a 128kw?
Might be worth ooking overseas....even with shipping, its cheaper than buying here.

I'm a 16" advocate. I tried 17" but prefer the ride and curb riding ability of the 16". 16" tyres are much cheaper to buy too. I love my Michelins but will be running Bridgestones next.

I'm also in the process of going from Miyato 16" alloys to 16" steelies - permanently. I'm just waiting for my third coat of paint to dry...

I just noted you have a Sports Edition. You may want to check that you do not need a large wheel to clear big brakes. Not sure if the local Sports Edition is similar to the German Sportline...
