After hours of calling VW dealers in Melbourne,Sydney, and Brisbane, no one could advise me of installing proper OEM bluetooth into my new 2011 Polo 6R TDI Comfortline. Thanks to VWWatercooled I ordered all parts from eBay and the result is excellent. Not much technical knowledge needed at all.

1) Ordering
From polish ebay seller "used_parts_specialists".
RNS510 "D" version (HW:H41, SW:3890, built January 2011)
Part 1T0 035 680 D
HW H41, SW 3890
Bargained him down to $1000 inc shipping. The AUD is strong after all.
Arrived in 4 days. No bent parts like other users have mentioned.

From spanish ebay seller "bluewagen".
9W7 Bluetooth kit (not the 9WZ which also has rSAP)
Part 5K0 035 730 (built January 2011 - this is the successor of 7P6 035 730 C)
$370 including microphone and cabling harness.
Arrived in 3 days.

2) Correcting the spanish harness
Most likely the Spanish harness will work fine as-is, however it has the microphone connection bridged between the RNS510 and 9W7 Bluetooth. The RNS510 has a separate microphone pass-thru, so I changed the pins as detailed here:

The Volkswagen Club of South Africa - View topic - Golf VI GTI RNS 510 and 9WZ Bluetooth Install - Long Post (http://www.vwclub.co.za/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=116308)

and

Volkswagen RNS 510 Microphone Connection for voice control | my-gti.com (http://www.my-gti.com/1234/volkswagen-rns-510-microphone-connection-for-voice-control) (Option B)

I also cut the microphone wire to make installing easier, and then rejoined it at the centre console to the piggyback harness (see point 4 below)

3) Removing the old RCD310 system
Follow the excellent instructions by GraveDilute, this guy is awesome.

http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f128/rns510-into-polo-install-pics-56324.html#post635681

Particularly note the noob hint to remove any CD's first!

More pictures here: (note this is for a Golf though! it's different but gives you some idea)

4) Wiring the microphone
After removing the RCD310 I wired the microphone, starting at the cabin light at the top. This all clips out very easily with minimal force. Note there is a piece of black plastic where the microphone belongs which has to be gently clipped out with a long screwdriver.
You don't have to unscrew the sunvisor, mirror light or roof handle at all.
Just unclip the driver side A-pillar trim buy pulling firmly starting at the top. There is no Torx screw under the Airbag logo, it's all just clips. I did this with no damage. In fact, there is not even an Airbag under the A-pillar trim I could see.

Here is a guide for the Golf, again note it is much easier in Polo because there is no Torx screw:
http://www.my-gti.com/1867/volkswagen-golf-a-pillar-trims-%E2%80%93-removal-and-installation

Use a long rigid wire (like solid copper electrical wire) to push the microphone cable from the dome light to where you unclipped the A-pillar trim. No need to remove the headliner at all as there is plenty of space at the front near where the headliner meets the windshield.

Route the wire down the A-pillar, and unclip the trim at the driver's side of the dash, and again use the rigid solid copper electrical wire to push the microphone wire to the centre console where the radio was.

5) Install RNS510 radio
Again just follow GraveDilute's photo instructions above. I put the GPS above the air vents too, perfect spot for it. Removing the air vents required some jiggling, but it was fine. I didn't break any trim when doing this. Also remove the aircon control unit (2 screws from below, above where the cupholders are), and when you are inserting the RNS510 into the slot, you can help by pulling the extra cables away from behind the RNS510 using a hand in the aircon controller slot.

6) 9W7 Bluetooth module
I have the comfortpack climatic controls and the Bluetooth module fits perfectly behind the controls. This may/will not work if you have standard aircon controls, and you will have to route the module to under the seat.
See here: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f78/vw-my11-bluetooth-vw-9zb-45679-17.html#post647845

Issues:
- None really. Bluetooth and DVD Region playback work out of the box. No need for VAGCOM/VCDS coding.

-A2DP Stereo streaming with iPhone 4. Full addressbook download in under 1 minute. No issues.

- The non-GTI Polo's have a cheap midline MFD in the dash cluster, so you don't see any song or Bluetooth or any info at all. To pair the Bluetooth, the module is "discoverable" as soon as you turn the ignition on, PIN code for me was 0000 not 1234, so you don't need the highline MFD to pair.

- The standard steering controls work without coding. The telephone and voice control buttons don't.

- The "star" button on the RNS510 allow voice control. The steering wheel button for voice control stays as mute until you code with VCDS.

An awesome way to spend ~$1400 AUD. Think of the added safety with Bluetooth too!

I'm planning on getting this same Bluetooth kit from eBay, I'm thinking of doing it myself but I'm worried about programming the MFD and such. Really don't want to pay VW $800 for Bluetooth! :O

I don't really think you have a choice given that the dealers flat out refuse to fit the proper bluetooth module 5K0 035 730, stating it is a "Golf" part. All the dealers I spoke to offered an aftermarket FISCON system or the tack-on universal VW kit, part number 000 051 473A. Link: Volkswagen Accessories - Bluetooth hands-free system (http://www.volkswagen-accessories.ie/bluetooth_hands-free_system5)

Your best bet may be to order the part from ebay and get an independent service person to install / program it.

Just wondering how much work will need to get done for coding of the RNS510 with the aforementioned fiscon bluetooth kit, ive got my polo coming in the next couple of weeks and am seriously (already) thinking of replacing the rcd510 with the RNS and i havnt even gotten it yet haha.

Basically i know nothing about the whole VAG-COM side of things and was wondering how much effort was involved

If you get the OEM VW units I mention above (not the FISCON aftermarket bluetooth kit) then you need no Vag-Com coding at all. In the non-GTI Polo's you don't get a highline dashboard cluster MDI display anyway, so no point in coding that, and also most people prefer to keep the steering wheel button as "mute", since you can always press the voice control button on the RNS510 unit itself.

In summary in a non-GTI Polo coding is unnecessary. Only needed if you have a GTI and want the dash MDI display to work with the RNS510, or if you want the steering button to activate voice control rather than mute.

Hope that makes sense.

I wonder how many "bluetooth installers" would be able to do the coding though. I'll have to call around, i know my local car audio place fit bluetooth but i'm not sure if they could do that coding.

Hey guys,

I'm getting the RCD 510 on mine, from your experiences, is there any reason this won't fit?

The standard steering controls work without coding. The telephone and voice control buttons don't.

Just wanted to clarify, you cannot answer calls from the steering wheel? Where do you answer them then? Can this be done on the RNS510 or must it be done on the phone?

P.S. Anyone have any luck paying for an install on an RNS510 and/or 9W7?

That is correct, the module needs to be activated for the buttons to work via VAGCOM.

What is the most cost-effective way to have that done? Will a dealer do it for you?

Unless you are mates, they might bit*h about it if it's not the unit they would fit or the factory installed unit. Otherwise, find someone on here that has one to give it a try for you or see if you can borrow theirs:) You will need to make sure it is the latest version of teh Ross-Tech software though...

Hey guys, does anyone know if it's possible to access your phone contacts via Bluetooth on the Polo standard fit stereo? I'm struggling to find out if it's possible. Answering calls isn't a problem, works fine. Just wondering if the contacts is possible?

Took two hours...removed the RNS, heater controls, stereo 'cage', drivers side end of dash, side pillar and roof lights.
Removed older blue tooth unit, and installed latest VW one. Noting the need to cut the red and black wires which loop the mic in / mic out on the RNS wiring harness, as I wanted voice control which means wiring the mic into the RNS and then wiring the RNS mic out into the Bluetooth.

The most troublesome parts of the job were removing the side pillar to run the mic cable .... It's very tuff and should be pulled in a direction parallel to the front window...ie accross the dash, NOT towards the drivers seat.

The 9W7 comes with three lugs which stick out and make squeezing it and a metre of extra harness cable back into the dash pretty tight, so i cut the soft plastic lugs off and that gave me some room to move things around in there :)

Plugged climate control wiring back in and RNS wires to do a quick test before putting the units back, tightening the torx screws and putting the trim back....all good.

2 hours, couple of cuts (minor) on my fingers and hands.

My tips - 1. read the forum, 2. buy those blue trim removal tools so you don't leave marks on the dash trim when taking them off, and 3. wrap the Bluetooth in rubber or foam around the edges so there are no plastic squeaks when you sit it inside the dash.

Mate,

Glad to hear it all worked out.
You forgot to mention that you saved a stack of cash doing it yourself, you learnt something new and now you can spend the money you saved on something else shweet for your ride.

Ah yes that's a really good tip actually. The other thing I did was shorten that ridiculously long harness by cutting and re-soldering the wires (they are individually colour coded). It fits fine when it is long, but I find it neater this way :) Enjoy your new bluetooth!! I know I do. :)

I am - I hate cluter - so having no visible 'after market' mike glued to the window makes me smile, and the fast start up / connect, and proper sync to my iphone 4 contacts makes me :)

Next goodies- got to be those DRLs

Hi,

What size HDD is in that particular rev D unit you bought and what is the production date of it?

Cheers

So I just finished doing this conversion (RCD510 to RNS510 + 9W7 Bluetooth)
The RNS works great. But I cant pair with the bluetooth. When i turn on the ignition and search for a bluetooth device on my phone (and the mrs phone) it doesn't find the Polo's 9W7.
Its almost like the 9W7 module isnt there.
The kit I bought came with a secondary wiring harness that seemed to go between the factory large plug (back of the RCD) and the RNS & 9W7 module. I double checked the connections and everything is plugged in (maybe an issue??) THe large square plug, single blue plug and dual white plug into the RNS, the 9w7 plugs are in nicely also.

Any suggestions??

What does the screen say when you press the phone button? No phone found or no module found? Try resetting the RNS510 by holding both arrow keys and the star key for 5 seconds

Nothing comes up on the screens when I press or hold the phone button.
Resetting didn't help either. Im guessing there is a wiring issue. It seems like the RNS doest see the 9W7 module at all.

YellowLemon, Gavs, and others
Just had this very BT unit (from Spain) installed and paired with RCD510 in GTI.
After some initial hickups (couldn't find my iPhone) finally did and all ok.
However, steering control buttons and MFI not working...
Am I correct that this is a programming thing, and can be done by dealer or anyone with VagCom tool?
If so, what is required, bearing in mind that I am in Far North Queensland and there is not exactly a lot of choice of places to go?
Would love the steering buttons to work.
BTW, install of BT unit cost me $165, with unit installed behind glovebox and mic in its proper place above centre light. Sounds great through the stereo too, although phone ring made me jump from my seat!
any help greatly appreciated.
thanks

Yes, for the steering wheel buttons to work you will need to have this function activated either by a dealership or someone with a VagCom unit through teh control module for the steering wheel.
