Nice, mate! Very cool!

I received an invite to test drive the Amarok by Iverach Volkswagen yesterday. I'm tempted to go have a look.. But i'm not looking in any way to sell the Caddy van any time soon. I llllllove my Caddy. :)

I looked at this Amarok today. First thing that strikes you is exterior size - it is large vehicle.
Interior space and presentation are class above the competitors. Pity they dont make extra cabs , I would probably buy one...

After living with it for the first couple of days the overriding impression is 'this thing is bloody huge!'

I was driving it down a suburban street last night in pascoe vale with cars parked on both sides and we came within inches of it all ending in tears, I had to be very careful. The only other car I've ever driven that's felt this massive is a Ford F250 - the Amarok isn't as big but it gives you that same feeling of hugeness and king of the world i'm above everyone like feeling. My girlfriend isn't tall and doesn't sit high in the seat but going past a Captiva on the freeway last night even she could look down onto the roof! It's genuinely hard work in car parks. EDIT - Just went to Northland, I think I'm getting the hang of it, but you have to be so conscious of the size.

It cruises on the freeway so effortlessly at a lazy 1800rpm in 6th and doesn't seem to be too fazed by inclines or hills. It's bloody comfy, the Highline stereo is as good as the Passat I had a month or so ago...

Here's a photo of it parked behind one of my neighbours cars...

Looks like a pretty sweet unit. I'm interested to see how they go for warranty issues etc.

we have our demo to test drive now...

I'm not keen on test driving something I have no intention of buying.. It just seems wrong to waste your time. :)

If you want a good off-road test you lucky Amarok owners, try Rocky Track in Toolangi State Park but be warned, it is not for the faint of heart and you will most likely need some for of lifted suspension because the standard ‘rok front end just loves to bounce on anything not bitumen! ;)

Sam is there a Sat-Nav Option? and steering wheel audio controls, can you get Frank to give Me a Call _ Robert M, Also do you have a time frame when options will be available - Rear hard covers, Liners, Towbars Etc

What models do you on the floor also and colours?

Hi Robert -

RNS510 Sat-Nav is a dealer-fit option. No pricing for Amarok yet but I'd expect it to be around the 3-4k mark. No steering wheel audio controls available at all for Amarok. Accessories a pretty well available now, my tow bar is coming in today, the tub liners are backorder from Singapore at the moment so they're not that far away and the hard covers and canopies will start as soon as VW gives EGR the green flag to open up orders which should be this week.

Re: cars available - Just tell Frank what you want and he'll find it ;)

EDIT: Spare parts guy just came back to me on the tow bar, says we're waiting on VW for the Green flag on that as well. We can see them in stock in Melbourne so as soon as we get the OK we'll have them in a few hours.

Afternoon Sam,
Concerning the multi function steering wheel - when I was over your way looking at the 'teaser' you had on the yard we discussed the fact that the Transporter had the MF wheel but not the Rok. Any ideas if the Amarok loom is the same as the Transporter. If it is then there should be an unused plug......would it be as easy as replacing the Rok wheel with one from a Transporter (bearing in mind the airbag etc)?

Interesting thought, not sure though... I'll have a chat with the boys in the workshop and see what they think.

Good to see this being discussed. It was on my list of questions for my dealer this weekend. Those big blank plates on both sides of the wheel could surely be swapped for ones ones with controls. Even if there isn't a plug there waiting, why can't we install the few wires needed? It would defiantly make functions safer & easer. Plus, those plastic blanks on the wheel just cheapen the look of what is otherwise a very nice part of the interior.

That is really the best looking pick-up I've seen since the V240 (HA!). Would definitely consider one for my next car seeing as I'll probably want something off-road capable and doesn't carry the raping price tag of the Touareg. Is there any way to fit a rear fog lamp? I reckon it's a handy feature to have when we cop our summer storms up here and I've used mine quite a bit this season.

Took it off roading today. Went to the most seroius off road track I could find close to Perth. Surrounded by Motocross and Quad bikes.... needless to say I got a lot of stares. I found one section of rough but flat off road thatis about 2 KM's long and 30 metres wide... Floored it... Got up to around 110 KPH and it was awsome... very Dakar...

Will take it more extreem tomorrow...

So Dermot did you get to do your extreme offroading in the Rok? If so how'd it go? Any pics?

very nice car (truck)
on the steering wheel controls - I don't know if it's still the same but I retrofitted multi-function wheel to my Caddy. At that time no Caddys had steering wheel controls.
All that was needed was a new steering wheel, new steering wheel controller (under steering column), a bit of coding and you're good to go! I imagine it'd be very similar

Sam did you manage to get all the gear fitted to your Rok (towbar, tub liner and tub lid). If so any chance of a few pics on here for us all

Test drove one today and was very impressed. It's huuuuuuuge, but it doesn't feel like you're driving anything bigger than a Tiguan (which is what I'd been driving all day) and I was surprised when I was looking down into the window of an overtaking Navara. Would seriously consider one for my next car but may have to wait and compare with the new Ford Ranger...

FASTCRAIG
28-07-2011, 07:39 PM
Why would you compare a Ranger?????? Ranger is closer to a Great wall V240 than an Amarok in size

flyingfridge
30-07-2011, 11:54 AM
New Ranger is bigger than the current one, but I had a really thorough look around it at the motor show, the interior is still very plasticky and the rear suspension is still a very rudimentary design. The load bed is nowhere near as big as the 'rok's either....

Great Wall.. Ugh. What a heap of **** they are!

A bloke I know bought one (idiot) and the diff let go. He took it back for warranty and they claimed they wouldn't cover it because the damage had been done due to use..
