If its factory fitted it will have a shark fin on the roof and make sure they give you the RNS 510 disc with the maps on it.

Not factory fit. The dealer is putting it in - taking out the factory fit one. I want to make sure it has a 'new' dealer install and not an old off the shelf one...

As far as i know the latest one is version C, what are they charging you for the RNS and fitting ?
there are plenty of threads on the RNS buying O/S and fitting it your self is a much cheaper option
But if its being fitted by the dealer it will have a GPS aerial under the dash above the unit .

Thanks. How will I be able to check version numbers etc? Is there some menu option to check the HW and SW details?

Not that i know of .make sure you get the manual and disc it should have year dated on the disc, and check the receipt for what model was fitted , what did they charge you for the exchange of your unit and fitting ??

I have read that the manual and disc will come later in thebpost, not from the dealer at the time.
I got it for 2.4k fitted. No reworked Lithuanian screens. No customer changed his mind in Ireland :)

DiZzy - no doubt a trouble free one is a bargain. Top marks to you. I have read others where the supplier has supplied factory seconds. Coming from the electronics industry, I'd rather a new one than a rework. Preferences. I respect yours - glad it's a good one.

I'm sure there are many here who have bought from Lithuania and are more than happy after all mine cost $950 delivered and only cost $80 to be coded to the car and i still have my original 6 stacker and MP3 player ,where as yours cost $2,400 and that included the loss of your original head unit, so we all know who's in front .

Oh, common guys! What's the point of this? :?
It's just the radio, it doesn't matter who fitted it and where it comes from, the main thing is that it performs flawlessly. ;)
Here you will find how to check the s/w version. www.my-gti.com

Didn't know it was a race Ian - thought it was about freedom of choice and expression. More than happy is good. I commend you and happiness levels. When i get mine I too hope to be as happy as you.
Back to the subject ... Is there an easy way to tell what version people have ? Lithuanian, Irish, Australian or otherwise :)

The only way i know is to pull the unit half way out and there's the sticker on the top giving serial number and the version of the unit, if its a new unit ask the dealer for the box the unit came in ,as i'm sure it should have all reverent information on the label .
Also make sure you are given the user manual .

All you need is a credit card and a 25 torx tool.

Along with a full set of tools and a hoist for your engine which is standard for all dealers to give away these days :P
No, you won't be getting an "extraction" kit... as Ian said, a credit card and a T25 Torx screwdriver is what you'll need. Personally, I wouldn't use a credit card, there's a good chance you'll snap it, but a trim removal kit from fleabay will do you fine. The T25 can be had from any Bunnings for about $8 or you can take your chances with a cheapo from the $2 shop. Plenty of guides on here available on how to remove the RNS.
Cheers
Apparently there is a D Model that you can also pick up. Manufactured late 2010?
VW MFD3 RNS 510 passat tiguan golf LED star D RNS510 on eBay (end time 14-Mar-11 11:48:46 GMT) (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-MFD3-RNS-510-passat-tiguan-golf-LED-star-D-RNS510-/190508623732?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2c5b32e774#ht_1889wt_1141)
From the description, you can distingush whether it's a D model or not by the startup/boot screen. I've yet to navigate mine to find the exact model without having to pull it out.
