Looking at changing the bulbs on my GTI.

Just wondering if anyone knows what bulbs are needed?

Looking at getting Phillips Diamond Vision bulbs for the headlights and front fog lights.

I have been searching around but can't find any info.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers.

Are they legal?

Of course they are. I am changing just the globes, not the whole light.

So, the Law says you can change globes and still be legal? I am not trying to be argumentative here and I know nothing about this techinically or legally, but my my gut feeling tells me that if the colour and brightness of a headlight "stands out from the crowd", you better be pretty clear as to the legality of the mod. I'd also recommend a call to your insurer to check they're cool with it.

You will be OK with these bulbs. Just be wary of the Xenon effect blue bulbs available, usually on Ebay. They are absolute crap and not meant for reflector type housings like what's on the Polo. They are illegal as well as flare too much. More than likely Cnst. Plod will pull you over with a raffle ticket:(

Hi,

Just putting in what I've found after recently changing all my globes to platinum.
The diamond vision are illegal, although rarely picked up on, it even says it in small print under their packaging.
The headlight bulbs are H7 and the foggies are H8, H8 I dare you to find anywhere but ebay in a white\blue light, if you manage to find them I'd love to hear where!

To change them, as the manual says undo 2 screws on top of headlight and remove the entire headlight, I found this much easier to do rather than trying to get into the bulb housing through the engine bay.

Lastly.... the white platinums look smick! love them

Hi All,

Just put a set of these on order:

H8 5000K LED Headlights Light Bulb Fog Lamp Light Globe (eBay item 320642814347 end time 15-Mar-11 13:47:08 AEDST) : Cars, Bikes, Boats (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/H8-5000K-LED-Headlights-Light-Bulb-Fog-Lamp-Light-Globe-/320642814347?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4aa7cd118b)

Will grab a snapshot once they're in, aparently they will match my Phillips platinum headlight globes and they are LED too which is even better.

Do the GTI's have to same fog lights though?

I thought the GTI used HB4 globes for the fog lights.

Struggling to decide between the crystalvision and diamondvision...

hmmm...

Not sure on the GTI...
I was the same with Diamond vision, but after seeing them in a car at night on the road they look too blue for my liking. The crystal or platinum are more of a white light and doesn't trip the eyes out as much

Interesting... not too sure, i have the sports pack on the Polo and they are H8's.
Maybe the HB4 cross foggies are for the models with driving lights or whatever they are.

I have ordered the H7's crystalvisions for the headlights, just unsure of which bulbs for the fog lights. HB4 or H8..

Good choice, I would pop one of the foggies open and look. Its easy enough and the whole process is documented in the manual. Tools needed are all in your spare wheel well too...

After playing around with lights quite a bit when I had the 4x4, I have found that the best Halogen bulbs for my tastes are the Narve +80, aka Osram nightbreaker.

I have used both philips crystal and blue vision, narva arctic white, cheap Austra bulbs and Osram nightstalker (Narva +50). My experiences with the diamond vision:

I do a bit of night highway driving, especially in summer up and back from the mornington penninsular. These lights are brillant around town, they light up signs nice and bright and the light spectrum is great off reflectors, but get on a dark, unlit country road and I found them hopeless. The length in the beam throw was much less than cars with standard blubs. Now, I am not sure if this has to do with the reflector design in the Mk4 Golf headlights as the europeans are brilliant at HID technology, but there holgen-reflector lights used to leave alot to be desired. As soon as I put in the nightbreakers, it was different. While in isolation they give a blue appearance but it is a high intensity yellow light which bar HID, is a longer beam due to the colour spectrum, hence why most fog lights are a very definative yellow beam, it can penetrate the fog layer better.

But, I guess I was too late anyway, but if you're looking at upgrading the high beams (don't know how the polo light is structured, if it's seperate or not), look into the nightbreakers, $80-odd a globe, but worth it over most of the competition.

H8 12V 35W

"Cross" means the Polo Cross model which we don't have here in Australia.

Ok, so I have trouble following instructions and taking out the headlight unit to replace my bulbs. Unscrewed the two top screws and I don't understand how to "press the bottom of the headlight out of the guides..." I just don't want to break anything... help?

Yeah, exactly what I used. Even the "+100%" version. I replaced one side first so I can compare. Subjectively it is definitely brighter, and a bit whiter without being too douchey. Less sure if it's +35m or 100% brighter if you measure it. All in all a mod that's pretty easy, isn't too expensive and probably worthwhile results. Check maverick's site for objective comparisons. The GTI has H7s at the front for main and dipped beams and W5W for the parkers.

Those BlueVisions you linked to should be appropriate but you'll need two sets.

the light switch pulls out twice (two clicks), first for front fogs, then the second out is for the rear fog.

The wiring connector or the plastic connectors that hold the light in? Either way, you do need a fair bit of force to release either of them.
