View Full Version : VIC Polo cruise (once our cars get here!!)

Hey all,

frostee mentioned a good idea last week that I think would be a great idea for all of us who would like to come along, to hold a cruise for the new Polo owners out there. I'd say all models would be invited.

I'd be looking at a date around June/July for one very good reason, that's when my damn car gets here(along with GTI Joe and others)!

So, let's dredge up some suggestions and opinions if we should let other members tag along with their inferior models of VWs ;) unless someone has a new Scirocco of course, that could always tag along in my opinion!

My suggestion? We need good driving roads so I'm thinking we meet in Croydon (or my place in Ringwood) and then head up to mountain hwy for a leisurly start. At the top, hang a left onto the tourist road and follow it back down to Canturbury road. Right at the roundabout and then right again to Wandin. RRight again and we head up there to the Reefton spur and hang a left. At the top of the spur, we go left again to marysville for morning tea (if you feel like eating, she gonna get twisty!) then down the black spur to Healsville. We go through Healsville and turn right onto Healsville-Kinglake road, aka the famous Chum Creek Road. This will take us to the Melba Hwy, which we would cross to go to Kinglake. Once there, we can stop again if people want, then down the Kinglake-St Andrews road, a ball tearer and brown-jox-generator of a road, especially if you encounter a truck coming the other way! that will end up in Eltham..... Havent thought any further than that yet!

Hey gavs, I'll be in it, although tentatively until a set date is announced:)
Looks like a nice passive drive;) Have been around there many years ago, very scenic and challenging. BTW, the Scirocco is on its way from NZ...yeah right!

I just realised that Myslef, GTI JOE and frostee basically all have identical cars, that will be an interesting sight going down the road!!!! :)

Will set a date closer to recieving a definative ETA of cars arrival which we should have by Monday. Gotta love how Google says 3hrs, 21mins to travel 209 kms along that route, would be an "interesting" (read, DEAD) trip to do it in only that amount of time!!

i'd be keen for sure. reefton spur is one of my favorite roads.

another option is the usual - welly rd - launching place rd. then right to warburton etc then on to reefton.

p.s. may i make a suggestion? gather as much interest as you can, then start working on drive dates via PM - that way, cops arent waiting for us as we roll into warburton like they were on the maroondah dam cruise (partly my fault- all my crap talking about ''spirited driving'' + cops keeping their eye on this forum = bad news).

cheers,

scotty

Good idea Scotty, will keep that in mind:) did think of the usual meet but mountain hey, even though it will probably be busy, is a great bit of road for anyone who has never driven it:)

And Joe, you just wish it was quicker!;) what do they say about those who brag?;)

Ah, allegiance, it's you that has the qfm pads! I'm thinking of putting the same pads on the GTI when it gets here, what are your thoughts as some reports from countries that have actually got GTIs is that the standard brake setup doesn't quite match the pace of the car and on this route, I don't think brake fade would be a good thing!!

Getting a little off the topic, I second this gavs. It would be interesting to see how these pads perform. Allegiance, I have also noticed you have changed the rotors as well? how is the combination of pads/rotors performing? and where did you get them fitted? PM if you like;).

Hey gavs, have you read the Drive section of this saturdays Age? Polo GTI v Golf GTI, pretty basic and may I say, crappy article:( Trying to compare apples with oranges all over again!

GAVS and GTI JOE:

i'll chip in here. i know i've just got a 9n polo, but here was my experience: prior to getting my brakes done, i had the tune, and having a ''spirited'' drive every now and then wasnt a problem - squirting up the eastern, up mtn hwy, etc etc.

hooked up with some watercoolers for a baw baw cruise, with some people who ACTUALLY drove spiritedly (much more than i was used to), and it completely transformed the way i viewed my brakes - i got heavy brake fade after around 6 corners on the way down from the baw baw car park, and stopping at a T intersection, my brakes were visibly smoking like blackening toast in a toaster (seriously - plumes of dark smoke coming from both wheel arches).

got the front slotted rotors, A1RM pads front and HPX pads rear, plus GSL Rallysport's TRW race brake fluid...

now, i have full confidence. dont know if you guys have had this experience in your polos, but it's pretty bad when your brakes give way on a road like baw baw or reefton - very unsettling. now, however, my tyres will give way before my brakes.

put it this way - since doing the brake upgrade, im convinced that this has to be the first mod on any car i buy from now on. I've been over reefton spur (40kms of twisties into Marysville) almost a dozen times since having the brakes done, and I'm on it hard the whole way - my brakes have never once let me down, even when you're on it so hard that ABS is engaging every other corner.

GSL Rallysport are the guys to go to - Greg there is a great help, and if you want piece of mind, you really, really really need to do this upgrade.

Thank you, this is great information.

I can't say that I've ever driven so spiritedly to have had this problem however all you say makes very good sense.

Out of interest how much did it cost you to do the upgrade?

GTI JOE
27-02-2011, 07:47 AM
Yeah, I second this as well. Allegiance and Scott can you provide details of cost and if there is a place in Melbourne that does this? I would like to get the APR ECU upgrade and maybe some sway bars, depending on cost, even the brakes...not sure at this stage.

Oh, one more thing, shouldn't the stock brakes be done when they wear out and need replacement? seems like a waste of money to changeover NEW brakes before this????

Allegiance
27-02-2011, 07:48 AM
The brakes are much better than stock, I would go the A1RM pads over the HPX pads though. I also am running stock brake fluid, which I really should get around to replacing at one stage.

Yeah, I've spoken with Greg before when I was going to put TT brakes on my golf:) I know it seems a waste to waste new brakes, I might leave the stock pads on for a few thousand mms though to bed in the discs. My first upgrade will be a rear sway bar and pads, I'm not a fan of drilled/slotted discs, but thats just me:)

Yas, feel free to join in, though I hope the family is in possession of iron stomachs;)

Joe, Greg at Qfm is in Queensland, if he has the pads in stock he will post them down (6R GTI groupbuy maybe...).

Done:)

Just a reminder guys, this will be occuring in winter and we will be going above the snow line at the top end of the reefton, which could be a problem if our summer is anything to go by......

I also think it's probably a good time to add that if people are going to act stupid, anti social and drive like an idiot, you will not be welcome on this trip and I will PERSONALLY call the rozzers if anyone acts in a stupid, dangerous and/or immature way. I will not be peeling anyone off a tree or trying to revive them if they right themselves off. Unfortunatly, there will be a duty of care on my part in some way but if I can drive past someone who has done something stupid enough to get into trouble, I will be because CPR is a bitch!

I'm sure that after past experiences, everyone here is really good and well mannered but I have heard stories of idiots on other trips. We might encounter ice and even some snow so make sure you all drive to the conditions and skill levels, ESC wont save you on a narrow twisty road when you're coming off backwards after hitting black ice.

If you are holding someone up, let them past, I recommend we all take UHF comms, it will aid in this and there are generally plenty of areas for people to go past.

Yes, if anyone has handheld UHF radios, bring them along so we can all tune in to a subchannel and stay in touch.

It really helps reduce the "WTF are they/have they gone?" factor.

Totally agree!

I currently drive a MINI and the club I was in had a very comprehesive but simple guideline sheet about code of conduct on Club drives. I'm sure that if I ask nicely I can get a copy. I haven't done so to date as I thought there might be some governence here, but having thought that through now I realise this is a public rather than paid up member site.

Anyway, happy to get the rules we had and throw them out for comment

That's twenty people, umm, people. Soooo, nobody had given any thought in regards to numbers so in my mind, the cruise is capped. i'm guessing Waterboy probably won't be joining us unless his mum gets her car soon, so that might be one spot.....

Hey peoples! For $1370 I've added RNS 510 and 9W7 Bluetooth to the TDI. Can't wait to show it off :) When are we cruising?

RNS510 and 9W7 Bluetooth in the new Polo 6R (2011) (http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f128/rns510-9w7-bluetooth-new-polo-6r-57428.html)

Ok, so dates at this point are **th and **th of ****, yes, I did deliberately do that, a) so certain people won't know and b) because i don't know! Based on my can and hopefully others arriving in Melb June 7th, plus the pre-delivery wait, who knows.

Also as a heads up, ski fields received 3cm of snow overnight so if indeed the snow is bad, we will unfortunately have to dispell the reefton leg:(

Hey Gavs

If someone down there is really desperate for a place slot them in instead of me after all probably be more of a definite being in the same city.

Hmmm, that sounds like a wimp out... ;) I'm sure if people are really desparate, they will be accomodated, like I said, I am sure people will pull out anyway:)

Hey all,

frostee mentioned a good idea last week that I think would be a great idea for all of us who would like to come along, to hold a cruise for the new Polo owners out there.

I would be keen to join the drive when i get my polo :)
