Well guys you may already know that I have a 76 Passat and have seen a few pics of it. I did have a thread started on it but has been lost since the new forum layout. No matter, this in now the proper build/resto thread for the old girl.

Few little things have been changed in the last few months. I reupholsted the door trims with orange tartan. sorry for the phone camera pics

There's off-the-shelf linkage kits available.

haha thanks mate. I think we still have Wurth calenders from back in 2004 haha. Cant imagine the place without them

Thanks for the link Pete. Alot of good stuff there :) Ill see if I can get away with a simple setup first, if that fails than ill probably get the Lp1000 top setup.

Well I have mock fitted the webers on the manifold and spend the whole arvo with the old man sorting out different throttle linkage setups. Decided to go with a Volvo 240 throttle linkage. Its a round unit which the throttle cable attaches to and it has its own return spring built in. Its a neat little setup that will sit between the two webers. Pics to come when I have the adjustable rod from the volvo part to the webers sorted :)

well the webers are on and running. They still need tuning with a synchrometer though. Did the best we could without one. Seem to run fairly well, but it does need a better tune, hopefully this coming week. They sound great though :) Don't pay attention to where the fuel lines go at the moment. They are only taking that route temporarily. Will be cleaning up the engine bay from all the 30+ years of added on dodgy wiring.

Very cool, plenty of room in there for a proper air filter setup.

Yea Pete I was looking at a nice ITP air filter setup but the trumpets on cylinder 1 and 4 sit a bit close to the headlight and the strut tower, so instead I decided on some Pipercross socks. The socks make the induction noise very very nice, and addictive.
Here is a few pics

Very neat mate. I like it. :)

Cheers guys :) Its just your standard FN 1.6 engine. The motor had been rebuilt a little while back and it still has strong compression. When I had bought the webers they were set up for a 1.6 engine. Similar jets, chokes etc set up for the 1600 crossflow Cortinas. So I thought I would set the webers up the 1.6 purely for fun and curiosity. At the moment they are running lean and in need of a fine tune but it still goes fairly well :)

Will be getting a mk3 1.8 latter down the track though.

Thanks mate :) still a while to go for what I have in mind. Was planning on getting a nice retro steering wheel this week but my damn battery is so knackered and barely holds a charge, It struggles to start up those webers.

So little up date: new battery tomorrow haha

loving your work dude! Looks great! Bet you'd never get sick of that induction noise either!

Never get tired of that induction noise. I think I have only turned on the radio once since I fitted them. And then it only lasted 5 min till I turned it off because I missed the noise of the webers haha.

More updates to come shortly. My inspiration for this project has now turned to the rally/race Escort mk2's of the 70's and 80's. So im anxious as to how this is going to turn out.

Cheers for the comments guys. Appreciate it :)

Well things have been slowed down a little with the old girl. Did Get some nice BMW 14" BBS wheels from Intensem1 a little while back and couldnt be happier with them. I have been umming and arring about what type of wheels to get but these came up for sale and just had to have them. No tires yet though. Still deciding what size I want to go with...

Decided to pull the carpet up to inspect the rust damage. I had noticed wet passenger side carpet. And yep, the sound proofing material was soaked. I have no doubt there would of been 2-3 liters of water held in there so in the bin it went. Rust is only surface so will be getting treated as soon as possible. For now (without the carpet or the back seat in) it has a real 70's race feel, which I am really liking. Recently also purchased some Escort Mk2 quarter bumpers to adapt to the Passat and see how this 70's inspired track car turns out :)

Engine bay still messy but its slowly on its way. Twin webers still burble and roar :)

19-05-2011, 10:57 PM
Man you got the exact same setup I want for my TS, BBS wheels, twin webers, clean engine bay set up, clean interior, good condition paint job, man just gotta love the old cars. Was wondering since you've had the twin webers on for a while now hows the performance? significantly more power than the old set up you had before? and hows the fuel consumption? You reckon you could take some more photo's

From what I know GolfMan, You make a couple precise measurements, take a diamond tip saw, say a couple prayer's, then cut the springs.

Thanks guys :)

Hahaha thats it. I have spend many many hours searching and have come to the same conclusion. Its the easy way out. Hard way (and has been done before with success) Is to actually cut a section of the strut and remove what ever desired length. Insert Golf MK1 strut inserts because their shorter. Buy Golf mk2 front lowered springs and top spring cap? Or coilover sleeves. Seems like a too much stuffing around. I am willing to try it one day though with a spare set of struts. Till then Ill stick with the diamond blade.

I was never gonna expect significant performance increase bolting twin carbs on a flogged out, bog standard FN 1.6 engine. But There is some slight performance increase, seems to have more poke through the mid rev range. It is a bit quicker but not quick enough. Sounds great though. Fuel consumption is a little higher but not so much that Im worried about it. Never been one to care about fuel consumption anywho. The way the carbs are set up I believe will work better for a 1.8L. Include a nice camshaft and I reckon it will be enough for these old passats. I could stuff around with the 1.6, bore, port & polish, cam, gears etc....But thats just wasted money when a mk3 1.8 will bolt in :)

So, been working on the Passat a bit more of late. Spent the weekend treating the rust with POR 15 products and placed sound deadening (edead) on the firewall and front floor pans.

Replaced the huge standard Passat B1 steering wheel with a new MOMO Prototipo. Had my eye on this wheel for a wheel. It keeps with the 70's style of the car that I desire.

Next up will be some dense foam for the floor, then I need to find a decent carpet dye to redo the original carpets. Some new tyres for the BBS will be next as well as some Recaros. Reupholster the dash with black suede. Bit of a list at the moment but its getting there :)

Does the sound deadening work?

Preen59
17-08-2011, 06:48 PM
Really nice, mate!

Those Prototipowheels are mint. I got one for my Uncle's 914/6 GT. looks excellent.

Have a serious think about doing the dash in suede if it's going to see a fair amount of sunlight.. I spoke to a very good upholsterer about doing this with my Mk1 dash and he said if it's not a show car, don't do it. Problem is, over time the sun makes them bubble and it's super hard to fix it. A friend of mine did his with normal auto carpet and it's held up for about 10 years.. So that might be an option, as it can breathe so you don't have the same issues.

The sound deadening definitely makes a difference. I like your approach here. :)

Thanks Preen.

Thats good to know about the suede. Is that the genuine material or the 'faux suede' as they call it? Might have to do a bit of research on suede haha. Wasnt really interested in the other carpet materials as I wanted a race/rally look and something that will look clean.

Yea the wheel is great. Excellent quality as you would expect from momo and suits these 70's cars well.

Little update. I decide to tackle the dashboard. Went to spot light and grabbed some suede. Looks light quality material as well. Seems like it wouldn't have any problem with breathing. Not too sure how it will handle the sun in regards to fading but I will a sun shade on the windscreen most of the time. Cleaned up the dash as best as I could but I could only do so much without spending heaps on time on it. Being a daily vehicle I couldn't afford to have the dash out for too long. Covered it with a thin foam backing fabric and then the suede. Pretty certain I wont be doing another anytime soon haha. But Im happy with the end result. It was a nightmare to make the fabric wrap around the instrument cluster :(

There is also big water leak in heavy rain so I borrowed some Wurth Windscreen Adhesive from work and sealed the gaps from the rubber to the glass. Still waiting for the sealant to try so haven't been able to properly determine if that is the cause of the leak. The Wurth sealant is excellent stuff though! I would definitely recommend it.

Does anyone know of a decent auto carpet dye?

cheers guys. I now know what ill be doing differently when upholstering a dash in suede or any other fabric for that matter haha. Wasnt as easy as I imagined it would be haha.

Keen to get these carpets back to deep black and fitted. looking at the silver sound deadening is getting old haha

tassie_euro_mk1

attacked the carpets today. Got some VHT vinyl/carpet spray and gave it a shot. Not bad stuff to be honest. Its a dye rather than a paint so it penetrates the fibers pretty well. Photos are a bit average sorry, was taking in the bright sunlight. The black is actually darker than it appears.
