First things first..........not sure if this has already been posted. Did a quick search with no joy........so here goes.

This post is about exploiting the built-in ability of all VW TDi's with a drive by wire throttle to have ECU controlled cruise control. All one needs is the VW cruise indicator stalk, a short four wire loom and a ECU recode.

Here are the two links that I have refered to to get this done
http://www.christiantena.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/motor/vag/tdi/ccs.html
http://www.caraircon.co.uk/html/t4_cruise_check.html

I have a 2001 build T4 Transporter. When I bought it I had the dealer fit a cruise control which apparently was what they used on the V6 Caravelles. Cost me an extra grand. Since then it has been used extensively but the rough roads and dust played havoc with it's operation and it had lately become unreliable. To the point of being dangerous - in one incident it wouldn't switch off with either the brake or clutch

I tripped over this VW solution on a British forum and since I already had the stock VW indicator cruise stalk, all I needed to find was the connector block. I found said block after a quick ferret behind the fuse box.

The van went in for a regular service last Friday and I discussed what I wanted the tech to do which was 'follow these ECU coding instructions and set the ECU to activate the cruise program' then I would disconnect the switch from the existing cruise and wire it up to the block.

Naturally, the tech had never heard of this before and was sceptical. In playing around he found that the re-code was possible but some of the code numbers were incorrect so he contacted VW Australia for clarification. They had never heard of the mod either but were apparently very interested in it. Anyway, they clarified the codes and the tech was able to make the necessary changes.

At this point, the tech went further than I requested him to.....he wired the switch to the block. And went out and tested it. And it worked. Much to everyones surprise except mine. In the end I was charged $150 for the tech's time which is I suppose money well spent.

And can I just say that cruise control when activated by the ECU is so much better than that delivered by a cable controlled by a box.

The kits (switch and loom) to do this mod are available on EBay - http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.co.uk%2Fws %2F&fkr=1&from=R8&satitle=cruise+control+VW&category0= or you can get the switch from your friendly VW parts supplier and build the loom yourself
