Battery drain problem in pre 2007 VAG cars

Some eBay sellers have this message

“If your car is 2007 year or earlier and has old CAN-BUS gateway module (pre-K version), you may experience battery power drain issues. Just contact me and i will update the unit with the same latest original 2764 firmware version (but with older CAN-BUS gateway codes) and you will not have any problems with battery power drain. 2008 and later year make cars do not have any problems with battery power drain, so if your car is 2008 year or newer, no need to contact me for this issue”

It is worthwhile to scan your installed modules to find out whether you need a different software version in your unit, that you’re ordering.

Replacing CANBUS in MY 07 MK5 Golf 2.0L TDI

Warning! It's NOT Plug&Play installation. You need VCDS or smilar to code the new Canbus, if you make a mistake during coding you could end up with not drivable car!

Can-bus is located above the accelerator pedal and can be accessed after removing small compartment on right hand side of the dashboard, just swivel it down then squeeze the sides of it and push further down to pull it out.

Pinch the tab - pos. 1 in the picture then gently pull towards you and carefully manoeuvre it to the left, so you can put your hand inside to unplug the canbus connector and remove the canbus.

After you unplugged the connector just lift the canbus up and take it out.
Install the new canbus and use VCDS to code it using saved coding from the old canbus module.

can someone confirm if the RCD510 has digital radio reception for AU models?

i've been told by one dealer that it had digital radio but i wasnt convinced as its an optional extra in the EU market.

From what I understand the receiver in EU markets is for DAB channels. In Australia we use the DAB+ standard, so is not compatible with European components. I'm open to correction if anyone has more details.

thanks mate, i'm aware that there may very well be a different standard used here than that of the EU. i wasnt expecting the receiver to be the same item - would just like to know if it is indeed a digital receiver or analogue one that we get here? i know that many new EU cars sold here now come with digtal receivers, even some local ones.

I got an RCD510 from a guy who took it out of his R, I can confirm it is a digital radio and it has Text etc. but there is no plug for satellite radio on the back. In addition, when i look at VCDS on my car the option for digital radio isn't ticked but it still seems to work just fine.

n00b question here, can the RCD510 be retrofitted with extra hardware or software to enable sat nav, or are they completely different units to the RNS510?

Totally different unit. You need to swap out the whole thing.

You'll need the specific anti-theft code number for the unit — if the wrecker doesn't have it, I'd walk away.

The rest is pretty easy.

To obtain the pin you will need the VIN number from the wrecker plus the serial number from the unit make sure you take the sales docket to the dealer or they wont help you .

It should be a straight swap, however some coding may be needed.

Is the RCD510 supposed to display titles of CDs as well as the individual tracks? Mine doesn't display any titles at the moment - ie it just lists them as "CD1", "CD2", ....... "Track 1", "Track 2", ..................................
